XBOX HARD DRIVE HELP PLEASE

Santa bought our eldest an Xbox 360 slim (4gb) for Chrimbo, thinking this would be enough to get him started....however he's pointed out that to play certain games properly he needs more hard drive than what he has available.

Sooooo what do we do to extend his hard drive....don't want to bodge anything or do anything that could possibly invalidate his warranty. Was told today that we could use a 50gb external hard drive but where the hecky do you get them from as everywhere I've looked the smallest has been 250gb.

Any help/advice appreciated :)

get a 16gb memory stick ?

yeah, you can use up to 16gb memory stick or just buy a 250gb hdd and replace the 4gb one

you can't use a 50gb hdd, even if they exist

Like souljacker said best prob buying a 250 or even a 500gb hard drive and swapping them over. Easiest place is PCWorld but any good computer shop should be able to get you one.

Hubby broke open the casing of a 20g hard drive (don't worry about doing this the actual hard drive is only about the size of an iPhone and the case is no use), inside is a standard hard drive with an xbox conversion lead, simply unplug the lead as you don't need it with the new slim xbox. Now insert the hard drive into the slot on the new xbox taking care to match up the pins. IT ISN'T COMPLICATED & WILL SAVE YOU A FORTUNE. (LOOK ON YOUTUBE)

Don't you need to format the donor hard drive as with the old 360?

Usually I'd have done the same thing but I just went for the 250gb! But in fairness I've read that its relatively straight forward to change the HDD over so you should be fine! I don't have much luck, I know if I tried it I'd knock the xbox by accident and it would land head first on my concrete floor in a million pieces!! :p

ours was a direct swap from an old xbox and worked straight away. We have several xboxs (4 teenage boys) that we inter change xbox external hard drives so he simply took a standard 20g hard drive off 1 of the old xboxs and it was recognised immediately. ( have exchanged internal parts and these do need re formatting as they were specific to the xbox they came from, that's microsoft for you!) NOTE: the only tricky bit was locating the connector. You don't touch any seals. Remember to do it with the xbox unplugged....as with any electrical appliance. HTH

But the op only has a new xbox 360 slim, nor much point telling them how to hack an old hdd to fit it

Thanks everyone......don't know what's best to do....if the 16gb memory stick works same as a hard drive (I'm a technophobe so no clue) then that might be easiest route to go down for now. Wished we'd thought of this beforehand and gone with the 250gb model.....hindsight is a wonderful thing eh!

dont memory sticks take a chunk for software? so your only left with a bit on the stick?, i really would suggest the route of breaking open the old hard drive/second hand microsft drive and just installing that, theres no formatting etc just open , insert and its there, we have done it on three now,
