I'm guessing i need a replacement headset, rather than a controller as I can hear but not speak?

Advise please?

Get it replaced at the store for free but give serious thought to buying a descent cheap headset like the Plantronics halo 2 or original xbox headset + datel adapter

I've only been able to find the actual headsets on eBay... can pm you the link where I got mine if you want?
I bought the datel headset adapter from gameseek but I haven't looked around for a cheaper version.

Off topic I know but my official wireless 360 headset stopped working last week and Microsoft wouldn't replace it as it's quite old now. Took it apart and pulled a fuse off, shorted it and it's working perfectly again! Shoddy design, shoddy build quality as usual.

Original Xbox Headset eBay number: 370219724589 (£8.99 but has accepted an offer of £7.45 in feedback)

Halo 2 Headset eBay number: 220452471916 (£8.75)

I've gone through a load of 360 headsets where either the mic or speaker have failed. Dug out my original xbox headset until the speaker went on that & I'm now on the Halo 2 headset.

Still on the same wireless 360 controller & datel adapter.

Edit: I THINK it might be a case of one of the wires breaking inside the headset's cable. On the original 360 headset I tried cutting the cable & re-soldering the wires but due to being useless at soldering the sound quality was absolutely terrible.

If you have money to burn you could try one of the turtlebeach X4s

link doesn't work but unless you can find a good review of them somewhere I'd avoid them.

Had to open the wired headset too and resolder the wires as the connection was very dodgy just at the point it comes out of the little grey adapter.

record your own voice to rule out headset problems.

How Game can justify £14.99 for a brand new 360 headset is really comical. They are only worth £1.99 at a push tbh 99p is too much for the build quality etc most brand new ones from all my 360 purchases are appalling and don't work properly if at all.

How they got past QC is beyond belief. The wire is so thin and the actual jack point is terrible, scratch on scratch off.

A 3rd party manufacturer could make a killing with this if they design a decent one at a low price with enough to give a nice profit without being too greedy.
