I have just purchased an xBox 360 for my son and want to connect it to the internet. I currently have a broadband connection with a wireless router. The xBox is in a different room to the router so do I have to buy anything else to connect it?

You can either wire the xbox to the router by using an ethernet cable, depending on distance from router and if your router has an ethernet slot in it.

Or

You need a wireless adaptor, which can be purchased from amazon, play etc just enter xbox 360 wireless adaptor in the search on those sites

You could run an ethernet cable from the router directly to the xbox, or, if you want it wireless, you need to buy a Xbox wireless adapter. I personally have the official Microsoft one, which is dropping in price because of the new wireless N adapter, but there are unofficial ones, but I have no real experience with them.

Or you could bridge a connection from your PC or laptop...look it up on google takes a matter of mins and work fine :)

Thanks for all this guys. I think I may be asking a few more questions as we start to get grips with things.

You will automatically have silver membership - this entitles you to conect to Xbox live to download updates etc but you need gold membership if you want to play multiplayer games on Xbox live with others. I think you get one months free gold membership when first register....

If you do decide to buy a gold membership, you can get some codes cheaper on Ebay etc

I can't even find an Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter now......

Or buy an ethernet adaptor for about £15-£20 that is either powered by mains or usb, thats what I do for my older consoles like Gamecube and PS2 to go online with.

Have you an example of one to show me please?

xbox users tell me you can get an ethernet cable for a couple of quid and XBL for £25 if you look hard enough..... instead of an overpriced wifi adaptor and £35 XBL.

oh and when i say what if its in another room, they say well the longer cables cost a few quid more.

just passing on the advice, hope it helps.

Will this one work with my Netgear DG834G?

I've got the official wireless N adaptor. And it works with my netgear router (which is a WGR614 (i think)). The adaptor will work with most routers.

Cheers I bought one from shopto

I just bought a 30m Ethernet cable for a few quid and plugged it into the router, then put it under the carpet all the way up the stairs into my room and into the back of my 360. 15 minutes of work and saved a lot of money!

For the sake of £40 I really couldn't be bothered with ripping up carpets and Laminate Flooring.

It has been delivered today and I am stuck already. I have put the disc in and nothing happens so according to the instructions that means it is already updated.

If I go to Wireless Mode, wireless mode is not even showing.

Any ideas?

I don't have the N adaptor - just the normal one but have you tried following this guide?
https://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xbox360/kb.aspx?ID=977641&lcid=1033&category=hardware
and this is the one for configuration

Note If wireless mode is not available and you are using the black Wireless N Networking Adapter, try using the software installation disc included with the adapter.

Sounds like it hasn't been updated - Did you unplug the adaptor and follow the instructions below?

To install the software for a Wireless N Networking Adapter
If an Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter is plugged in to your console, unplug it.
Insert the installation disc included with the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adaptor into your Xbox 360 console.

Turn off the console.
Turn the console back on.

The software update should start automatically. If the update does not start automatically, the software might already be installed.

Note If you receive a mixed media error message, please see the section titled "Mixed media error message" below.

When you are prompted to install the software, select Yes, update now.
If a network cable is plugged in to the back of your console, unplug it.
Once the installation is complete, plug the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adaptor into the USB port on the back of your console.

Tried all of that and I get nothing.

I have sorted it. I turned off my Router and then installed the disc and it has worked...

Well once you have it all up and running the next step will be sorting out your NAT setting and thats a whole new adventure

PS you haven't said how old your son is - you may want to look at the family settings page
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/familysettings/live/xbox360/xboxlivecontrols.htm

You can prevent your son hearing other people (other than "designated" friends) which will hopefully exclude some of the swearing etc that goes on in some of the popular games...

Cheers will take a look.

As for purchasing Gold do you just get a code or do you physically have to get something in the post before you install it?

You just enter code using your xbox control pad - you can enter it via the web (supposedly) but when I tried this it didn't work.
Don't forget that when you register you get a free trial of gold - I would give this a go before splashing out on annual membership. Don't take up the MS option of paying monthly.....
#31
You'll need money and money...MS Cashbox is like that! Wireless adaptor THEN pay for Gold membership...
