My Littlun has just asked if he can go on Xbox live, so looking into it for him.

I have previously used xbox live on the original xbox - so hopefully the wireless bridge I bought for it still works. But if it doesn't, which wireless device would you recommend? Its actually quite annoying though! I used a 3 month free trial much - I didnt use it so cancelled before payment kicked in. Later I noticed they had ignored it and charged me for the year anyway! A phonecall got the answer "tough" and they just cancelled my subscription without a refund! T'was quite some time ago though.

Whats the best (ie cheapest!) way to get a subscription? Is buying from the US a good idea - or would they log the IP and not allow? I'm assuming it would be fine - but best to ask. I noticed a previous offer on HUKD which has expired. Do offers come up often?

Now as mentioned, this is being setup for a kid (aged 10) to use. Should I be concerned about bad language on it? Anything you can do to ensure it not being a problem?

I appreciate there are better forums to ask this - but know there are loads of subscribers here that can probably answer all of the above easy enough!

Cheers

Do you just mean a 12/13 month subscription? Cos if so, check out ebay, i picked one up in December for 23 notes, and there are some power seller's selling them for £25 or so.
As to your initial question about wireless, not a clue, i'm hard wired cos i just don't trust wireless. Don't all jump on my back for that, it's a personal preference and i don't like it

He he. I know you did. I saw the post in the offer thread. It prompted me to check ebay - and thats where I saw the US offers! (and hence the question regarding IPs!)

Jump? On the contrary. I completely agree with you - and have now hard wired all the machines in the bedrooms. Problem is, the location of the HTPC and Xbox360 means until I redecorate (such a horrible word!!!), I'm a bit stuck as I dont want trailing wires from the location of the router to the living room. Once sorted though (in about 6 months time), it will all be hard wired. But until then, wireless is the only option.

as far as i know the only way of going wireless is to buy the dedicated 360 wireless device £50 ish. as for bad language on there it is a problem and i don't think there is anyway of filtering it out, you would just have to mute all other players of you kid could not hear any of them.

Lol, the jump comment wasn't aimed at you, more at the zealots and trolls around here :)
As for IP checking, i think you'd get issues with a USA one, but again the ebay sellers, esp the power ones do differentiate between non-USA ones........

10 years old hmmm...... tricky. He will be exposed to bad language and inappropriate suggestions. I would try to limit him to playing only with his friends on private games on xbox live or you can "mute" the conversation on some games (or just don't give him a headset and have game sounds only coming from the tv).

I'm not familiar with the original wireless device so I can't say if it will work with the 360. But there are cheaper ways of going wireless without the official adaptor eg wireless bridge £30-£40 eg http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135658 or this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139105 (2nd one is cheaper but google to check it will work with xbox live) or via a laptop.

ps get the missus to do the redecorating.....

To be honest, I never used a headset when I was using it with the original xbox, though I kinda felt I was missing out on something! But I agree with what you say and hence the question. Not sure if he has any school buddies that use xbox live! - Though I have setup the 2 kids original xboxes to adhoc link in their bedrooms. The only problem - there are not too many games that use this method of play.

Yeh, I didnt think you needed an official wireless device. ATM I have a Linksys bridge device that was used previously. I see no reason it wouldnt still work (though its been sitting idle for yonks and not checked to see if it still works!)

However, picking up on the lapto side....

The xbox360 is sitting next to a HTPC that already has a wireless connection that works really well - and also have a laptop that works even better. Is that a viable alternative? I assume you just use a crossover cable? (Luckily both PCs dont use the network port - so wont be a problem if thats how its done.)

ps get the missus to do the redecorating.....

I'll suggest it. Somehow I think I will know the answer and it ends in off!!!!

If you select your Gamertag, then go to preferences and then Privacy Settings you can mute everyone bar those on your friendslist. Should keep the littleuns ears from being bombarded by foul mouthed yanks.

10 year old should NOT be allowed on x-box live, cos they always beat me at bomberman! Damn their faster brains and superior intellect :p

Did you mean unattached?

Whoops !! Drogba!!!! I bet those Chelski fans are now feeling foolish for their chants to Avram Grant!
#15
i mean attatched as you can hear people through the t.v still and is annoying whereas if you leave the headset attatched and not wear it you only hear the game.

Ah, ok, gotcha.

I think this is the biggest problem with console gaming online, i think the companies themselves (microsoft, sony) need to employ moderators to randomly joing servers and the 13 year old kids who continuously abuse people

Not used the laptop method myself - I got a good deal on the MS adaptor many moons ago.......

but I did find this link which describes what to do. Good luck
