I;m looking for some help please, my son is wanting xbox live gold for his birthday, I don't know anything about xbox and wondering if anyone can give advice as to what he will need to get started and best place to purchase. He has a basic xbox (I think, no extra hard drive or anything) and I have a wireless router set up in the house. What will he need to connect and will he also need a hard drive.
Many Thanks

He will need a hard drive, also ideally unless the Xbox will be connected directly to the wireless router a Wireless network adaptor, plus the Xbox live Gold subscription.

is the wireless router in the same room as the xbox? if it is you just need a network cable and the lives subscription.

If its not you have several options
connect to the router using homeplugs
connect to the router using the MS wireless adaptor
use a gaming bridge or connect via a laptop

If you technical knowledge is limited then go for one of the first 2 options. Homeplugs are about £40 to £50 a pair. MS adaptor is about £50. Live subscription you can buy for around £30

Other thing to consider is how old is your son? you may want to switch on some of the family settings and limiting him to play only with his friends...

I'll post some links these aren't necessarily the cheapest but will give you some idea...

you'll need to get:
- gold membership (~£35 for 12 months)
- wireless adapter (~£50ish)
- headset if you didn't get one with your xbox (which you should have) (~£10)

If the xbox is near your router, you can just plug in a network cable instead saving you having to get the wireless adapter!

thanks for the info, I'm not very technical lol, the router is in the room next door. So it looks like he will need a hard drive, subscription, headset (didn't get this) and wireless adaptor. He will be 12, do you think that he is a bit young or would it be worth while for him, just looks like it's going to be abit pricey and don't want to spend a fortune if he won't get full use.

hi,you only need a memory card with 256mb or more so doesnt have to be hdd.its because the nxe and manditory update is 128mb

you dont need to have a subcribstion to be on live you can plug a network cable in and would get a silver membership (access to friends list, download from marketplace demos and game add ons)

if a new profile was made without any save games while connected to xbox live you would get a month of gold free

If the router is just in the next room, buy a cable that you an get a for abour £5 and then drill a whole and connect it with a cable, this is the best way and the cheapest. save you £50 on the wireless adaptor

For just under £60 you can get everything you need from Amazon.... "60GB Live Starter Kit" - 60 GB HDD, 3 Months subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold, Headset and Network cable (Xbox 360) If after 3 months your son has not bothered with it that much, you can bang it all on ebay and you'll probably get back not far from what you paid for it !!!
