not sure about mkv but divx yes.

think you can use a conversion program on the pc and stream it.
think its the same for the ps3.

It's a personal preference thing. Do a bit of research on the games you want. Some are single machine releases. So buy the machine that has the games you want. I personally have a 360. It's has the games I wont and on the whole is cheaper for both machine and actual games. As for which to buy 360 wise, just make sure it has a hard drive with it. I have a simple arcade one with a 20gb HDD. It does everything I want and only cost me £100.

hmmm... if these are the kind of questions that you're relying on to decide then i presume i'm going to be of no help what so ever to you!!!!! was that in Russian?

Yup - after 2 years of 360 we finally took the plunge and got the ps3 - best answer is buy both then you don;t have to decide - but cost wise this is probably not the best idea!!
The 360 being cheaper is a big plus - it plays games well and the games are generally to be had cheaper than their ps3 counterparts.
Hubby had 360 for ages but the arcade pack wouldn;t have had enough space for him to do anything at all and his premium only just let him have enough arcade games downloaded to stop him complaining for a few days - he ended up having to upgrade to elite as his arcade addiction (because the turtles game is so cool - NOT) meant he had to keep wiping the games off and then re downloading them which was a proper pain in the butt!

The ps3 is a newer addition to our family and to be honest other than the whole little big planet i see no difference! it has a little more space (if you get the 120gb one) he hasn;t run out of space (yet) but hasn;t had it long and the games aren't as cheap.

if your a gamer go 360

watch watchdog on Thursday, as it looks like something is wrong with PS3s, its about time it came to the people as the 360 gets loads of bad press for there console breaking down but the new ones are very good and you get a 3 year warrenty for the 360. Sadly the PS3 breaks down and after a year its tuff. So PS3 fanboys watch this space (Or WatchDog's Space ;)

You can play MKV files by streaming through a PC as well as DIVX. ( You need xbox live, free on silver for your xbox to automatically download divx compatible playing software ) I would go for an xbox my self. Xbox live is much better, and has alot more features than the PSN. Additionally has more game exlusives and the "main menu" is easy to navigate and is more interactive ( displaying spotlight (recent news ) which also shows big game demos, big gaming news and other news being updated daily. As you've alrady probably guesed i own an xbox :p

PSN is free on the PS3, XBL is free for silver and otherwise will cost you. The cost of consoles can be difficult to judge. For a more apples to apples comparison, use Elite to PS3.
I use my PS3 as both a games console but also as a media centre, playing back downloaded/ripped movies and shows and using the optimized BBC I-Player as well as having both upscaling DVD and Blu-ray playback.
But if you are shopping on the basis of games, make a list of what you want to play and go with the exclusives you want. I wanted Valkyria Chronicles, I'm happy.

you can only play divx via usb stick / external hdd

you cannot store divx / mp3s / jpegs etc on a 360. you can on the ps3

ps3 hands down for a media console but if you purely just want to save a few quid and play games then get a 360 (if you dont mind a 4/1 chance if it needing a repair either).

PS3.

It will cost you less overall. You wont have to pay £40 for a wireless adaptor and £25 a year on Gold. With the Ps3, buy it and its all in the box ready to go.

You can store music to the 360....haven't tried with the others as i tend to use media extender with it.

Yeah you can store music on the 360s hard drive by ripping CDs but doing the same with video´s isn´t possible (like moving them from an external hdd or memory stick to the 360s hdd)

Yep playing is no prob.
You just can´t copy them over which is what thesaint wanted to know I think..

We have both consoles and used the 360 for everything media-wise ever since we first got one (streamed through windows media player 11 and some stuff with an external USB hdd)
Switched over now though (only for tv shows) as we can copy them to the ps3´s hdd and the computer doesn´t need to run as no streaming is involved

I didn't have the wireless adaptor issue as my phone port is right next to my big TV. So I have my router sitting next to my 360. Problem solved. I actually find the price of the adaptor a **** take. There is no reason, bearing in mind the 360 is a gaming PC in a console case, why you shouldn't be able to stick a USB wifi adaptor in the USB slot. But hey, if you make the machines you can make the rules I guess.

I have a 360 (hasn't been turned on in about 6 weeks) in hindsight I'd of got a PS3 and am looking into getting one at the moment. The xbox can handle most media when streamed from a PC which is what I used to do. If I was buying again I'd go PS3, due to the price cut, larger HDD bluray, all the online stuff you can do and free online gaming. If either of your consoles break o/s the years warranty you can still get refunded/replacement under the Sale of goods act. My 360 E74 on me before it was covered, after a bit of hussle and bussle with game I got a new console, thanks to advice from CAB and consumer direct about the SOG act.

but the 360 hasnt had any decent exclusives since 2008 and not that many great ones in the pipeline compared to the ps3.

each to their own. i got a 360 a few months back to play the exclusives and only found gow1/2 to be any good. now sold my 360 as it was just a dust collector like my wii.

Not ONE game on there that I liked.

I have both consoles and prefer the PS3 for BOTH gaming AND media. As someone else said, I hardly ever use my 360 to be honest... only for games like gears of war, fable and maybe 2/3 others that are exclusives to 360.
I'm not a fanboy one way or the other.. but the PS3 just ticks all the boxes of what I need.

Good luck OP, whatever you decide :)

only 1 that would interest me is alan wake but didnt justify me keeping the 360.

has there been any good 360 exclusives released so far this year?

I guess it just must be my taste in games but infamous, killzone2, uncharted2, Gran Turismo etc etc just appeal so much more imho

plus I like to keep all my mp3s / films etc on my ps3 rather than having to keep my pc on to stream them across

The makers warranty is in addition to not the exclusion off your consumer rights under the SOGA (and credit cards co's) which covers you for up to six yrs.
WD will probably highlight this and that there's an inherent fault in the PS3 by the number of failures reported.
Under EU regs/directives member states are afforded 2 yrs cover but the UK govt decided not to adopt it.

You only get a 3 year warranty on the 360 for certian defects. I'm a 360 owner as I said, at the time I bought my 360 it was the better of the 2 consoles. I'd jump ship now to PS3 if my missus would let me spend the money. Debating flogging my 360 to fund a PS3.

This thread wll descend into fanboy vs fanboy as usual. It's a personal choice, look into what you want and how mcuh you want to spend. Do you want a media centre type console with wireless etc, or do you want a games console with a couple of nice bells and whistles but no wireless. Do some research, cos you will generally just get 360 owners saying to buy that console and vice versa

The reason 360 has so many google results: "my xbox has failed, I have 3 red lights on my xbox, my xbox has e74 etc". Also that result will take in the original xbox results, where as the PS3 that you search for discards the previous 2 sony consoles.
