I ran an xbox and xbmc for years, and it was very very good at what it does, which is play videos either from an hdd or over your network from another pc (which is what I did). The interface is very nice and is probably one of the best media centre interfaces out there.

Its main downfall is it cannot decode 720p (or higher) content. However for your typical xvid download it is more than capable. It can also output in 720p which is nice!

I wouldnt pay too much for one, keeping in mind you can buy a 360 for under £100 used, and the 360 can handle HD content properly without choking. This is why I sold my xbox and bought a 360, due to the fact it can play back HD. Sharing your videos isnt quite as straight forward, but once you work it out it's fine.

Scotland. I'm in Glasgow and I have a couple I might be selling. There is another open thread in which the OP wanted one, agreed £35, but wanted orig. controller. I have one, but not orig. controller (I don't think, I can't tell the diff. anyway) that I will deliver if you are in the area for £35?

Original Xbox which has been altered to be able to run Xbox Media Centre homebrew software.

The reason this is so well liked is because of all the options and ability to play almost anything. It is only let down by the hardware as the old Xbox struggles to play upscaled video.

If you have an HDTV and intend to play HD files then a PopcornHour may be a better option as it has HDMI and plays 1080p HD video.

The menu and options on the XBMC are still superior though.

I have a hard modded XBMC and got a component cable to allow for upscaling to my 40" 1080p TV (terrible without it) and it would freeze and stutter because the hardware can't handle the power required to get the picture up to standard.

The popcornhour is a little pricey but seems to be the only budget option if you have an HDTV with the fact I can watch HD content a bonus.

If you have a normal CRT TV then XBMC is the way to go as frankly I would still be using it if it worked properly on my TV.

You can also watch stuff off some DVD players like the Toshiba 1080p upscaling unit I got for £50 a while back.

Not as versatile as the XBMC and can't handle the HD stuff like the Popcorn but a good compromise between needing something that can upscale and play the DIVX files if you own an HDTV.

Avforums has a thread where they send a Softmod kit to people flash their consoles then send it on.
