Xbox360 freezes upon loading ... (update)

Got a NTSC Xbox360 Premium bought it from HongKong over 18 months ago, come already modded, runs prefectly never had three red rings or nothing... until today, the drive sounds unusually loud and then I got a 'unable to read disc' error, restarted and the console just freezes on loading screen, tried few other games it's the same, all freezes when the games try to load.

Dashboard is fine, I can play all downloaded arcade games.

What's wrong, dirty lens or is my drive gone for good? if so how much is a replacement DVD drive and do I need to get a NTSC drive?

Thanks in advance!

(Update: Tried to play a DVD movie, half way through it was frozen again, restarted the console now I got the 'Three Red Lights', could this be caused by the DVD drive or does the lights mean something more serious?)

Give a good kick around the front room, it'll be back to new in no time :-D

Sounds like the drive is faulty.

I don't suppose it still has a warranty on it? Get it sent back to Microsoft if it has, they'll fix it for free.

Dont think the drive will be region coded if it is it will be on the circuit board, replacing a drive can be very simple or very hard, if you buy a replacement drive of the same model you just need to swap the circuit boards over as they are coded to the mainboard, if you replace the drive and circuit then you need to connect the old one to your pc via a sata connection (you will need a specific sata chipset to do this) and read the key from it and then spoof this onto the replacement drive.......

Definitely a dead drive in some form, fits step for me would be dismantle it and give the lens a good clean ( I use aftershave on a q-tip/cotton bud.)

My drive did the exact same as yours once i replaced the lens all was solved for me!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, looks like replacing the lens rather than the whole drive seems to be the simplest choice, will try that first.

Many thanks guys.

More serious - RROD is baaad! My console had it about a year ago, did a 3 penny fix (easier method of the X-Clamp) and it works fine.

I've just got my modified 360 back from microsoft, don't know what they did to it, its a bit squelier than it was however the drive came back exactly how i sent it... modded and working...

anyway, the symptoms of my 360 before i sent it away were, play a game half way through the 360 would just shut down, on reboot the 360 would freeze a few times then load as normal, play game half way through again, console switched off, boot up froze and then the dreaded RRoD

alls fine now though

Are you saying that Microsoft will repair modded console too? In that case I will give it a go
