Unless he's very handy at electronics I suspect it won't be easy.......

I feel confident to say that it is practically impossible for the average person.

Wrap it in a towel and power it up until you get 3 red lights and send it back to M$

Graphics chip is on the motherboard. If he knows how to solder then he might be able to do it. Might need to do it in a special environment as well. Could be anything though so even if he does replace it, it might not work.

has it just got 1 red light and displays and e74 error or is there no display no matter what AV cable you use?

you shouldnt ever towel trick it, you'd have to hope they replace the whole 360 for you, getting a repaired one back after that would be asking for trouble. I know someone that could give it a go, just for the price of postage, but doubt you'd be able to send it back to MS after that if they didnt fix it.

The best thing to do is get it to fully register an over heat, (70 degrees) people think RROD is ******ed, fact is they are set to RROD and log it so you cannot turn them back on till MS has had a look, when silicon nowadays is good for 110+ degrees, so most of the time it's not a melted or damaged cpu or graphics card, it's just the failsafe system put in place.

To get it to register an overheat, put a couple of correct size screw drivers in the back which will stop the fans from moving round, turn it on and let it heat up, it may take a few mins or even 10, but when you get the 2 red lights signalling an overheat, just pull the plug out of the back, do not try and turn off with the power button, just pull the power lead out of the back. wait for it to cool down fully, till it is not warm on the underneath (you can stand it up to help) then plug it back in and turn it on to see if there is any display, you may be surpprised in the result:thumbsup:

You should get green lights and display, if this happens and its up and running ok, then it would be best for you to get the xclamps removed and the heatsinks all sorted so it cannot over heat again. Trust me, try this first, dont towel it!

How old is it?

You still have the Sale of Goods act against the shop you bought it from. This can cover upto 6 years. But it goes on life expectancy.

If it's less than 2 years old, I'd say take it back to the store it was bought stating Sale of Goods Act.

You got nothing to loose.
