Look I know this is a strange choice but we got one of these for a family friend who is also 18 and he loves it. I think all boys love torches  anyway its very powerfull for the size and usefull for carrying about on these dark winter nights.......http://www.amazon.co.uk/LED-Lenser-Police-Focus-Torch/dp/B000OGCP6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=lighting&qid=1260806648&sr=8-1

I remember when I was 18 and used to last 30 minutes.

These days I'd just like to remember the last 30 minutes.

We got a family friend an engraved hip flask. I am sure with delivery etc. it came to less than £40 and it is something that can be kept but still evokes the legality (drinking) of the coming of age.
I can't remember the exact site but loads on google and it came in presentation box etc. Hope this helps
