Hi Jon

Don't just buy a system because it's cheap. With these things you really do get what you pay for. The cheap ones usually only produce 25fps split between the cameras, so if you have 4 cameras you'll only get about 6fps (stuttery results). Go for a recorder that can produce realtime recordings over ALL cameras. If I remember right, the Maplins ones won't do this.

Also buy quality cameras with good resolution and nightvision. If you buy a kit, it'll more than likely include quite poor cameras, but looks good on the box. You could buy the quality parts one by one, as you can afford them, but I wouldn't just go out and buy the cheapest setup you can find. Pointless having the crime on camera if you can't make out the person or the crime happened in between frames.

Will 25fps be any good if it was for each camera?

That's the perfect fps for each camera. The same fps as TV broadcast, so basically you won't miss any part of the recording, where with the cheaper systems you'll possibly miss some of the action because of the lack of fps.

can you not use a pc for recording?
I would personally buy 4 half decent camera's from ebay, a decent cctv card for the pc and set it up that way

I would buy one camera and from that decide if that one is fine for all 4 positions first, and if the lens size is suitable too, then work from there, probably also buying an extra hard drive for the pc along with them.

Ive found this type of camera is ok (depending on the distance you want to cover at night) ebay item, 220462366287 (you can get cheaper from hong kong but bear in mind you may get customs duty)

If you need long distance night recording too then look at buying an infra red lamp to go with them
