Hi All,

Posting in the hopes this helps someone.

I was concerned that my internet had slowed significantly over the past few days and had even disconnected entirely once, but reconnected after I turned the router on and off.

Figured it was due to the time of year, but then thought - hang on, why should other users outside my household effect my speed? Well it turns out they do, in the form of 'interference'.

What I did:

1) Went to this speed checker page to ensure it wasn't just in my mind

http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest/

Confirmed my speed was running slow, only 4.4mb/s when it should be up to 8mb/s

2) Went to the knowledge base on Sky's website and found this Help page here:

http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband-Setup-Connection-WiFi/Slow-Wireless-Connection/ta-p/581920

3) Printed instructions (because it turns off your internet momentarily)

4) Followed instructions - took 30 secs

5) Reconnected to broadband - you'll need your connection password so have that handy

6) Retested connection, and hey presto, now up to 5.5mb/s

7) I may test the other channels listed to see if they are any better

8) Also, i see you can 'repair' your modem if you have an ethernet cable handy, you can reset it, but I'm not sure if that will have an impact on the speed - has anyone tried this, can they comment on effectiveness?

Any other tips for boosting connection speeds appreciated!

Thanks

Actually it shut down my browser the first time i did it, so without an internet connection they were lost. of course you could copy and paste to notepad or word. But I like to print instructions, esp if the language is a bit technical. i'm just a lowly non-tech user.

Actually Sky Broadband is pretty good and fast, but many of your Internet Speed Issues are related to a few factors...

1. You are not such an advanced PC user (if you were you would have no issues) first thing is to download a tweak program such as Yamicsoft Windows Manager 7/8.. and within that program tweak your PC and Internet Settings...

2. Tweak your Firewall Settings...

3. Read a Windows 7/8 Services Guide and disable some of the many none essential system services that all hogging your bandwidth without your realisation. Google This: "Black Vipers Services Guide" and get studying... not only will you speed your PC up by learning about what is going on in the background, you will give yourself more protection.

4. Download CCleaner and tweak your start-up programs... as if you are not-so-advanced you will have more than 5 programs constantly monitoring your internet connection and downloading background data.

5. Login into the ROOT of the router and check settings, disable some junk that's not needed in there (error logging) for example.

There are more tweaks I could share but try these first, and BTW, if its starts going slow, YES switch the power on and off.

GOOD LUCK ALL THE BEST.

PS: DO NOT Switch, some people will recommend you do so... but there is no need.. Learning to Tweak Windows OS is MORE IMPORTANT.. cheaper and error-free.

thanks for the tips, could be slightly less patronising, i've been using computers for 20 years, but thanks :) also, are you saying the speed checker is lying? in other words, it is not giving the true speed my connection is capable of (not sky's fault), but it's my computer's "fault"? if so, that's scammy advertising from USwitch.

Yes Forgive Me for been Patronising... I`m sorry, I do actually feel for you, I fix a lot of PCs for people and help them to... It just touches me you see, that so many users are so unaware of the hidden aspects of Windows that slows it down immensely.. not just internet but the entire PC... Windows 8 is the worst ever... so much going on that majority of users DO NOT NEED... but of course Microsoft cannot design a OS purely for Home Users Alone.. This is where Tweak Programs come in Handy... I recommend Yamicsoft Windows 7 Manager or Windows 8 Manager... if you are struggling PM me and I will be able to help you further Good Luck And All The Best.

No you are right, I heard once most users only use 5% of their PC's capability if that... Hence Goog saw an oppty with the Chromebook.... But I fear it'd be a bit too basic for me.

Am running those utilities now.... I feel like it's speeding up performance already, so big thanks!! :)

Over a space of 3 hours your speed has changed, which you're happy about.

Which shows you don't know about contention ratio's and how the time of day effects your wifi speeds. Best get reading!

i do know that the time of day affects speed - however, it only took minutes to implement the above changes, and the speed increased 30% within that timeframe.

I use to have sky broadband two years ago , so I'm not sure if they still do this . Call sky and ask them to put you on a gaming profile, this should almist double your download speed and increase your upload speed fairly. I use to get 7 mb when I should be getting 14+. After going on gaming profile , sppeed increased to 16mb. Try it , doesn't cosy a penny , take 5 minutes

I suppose you could buy that program or just do it all yourself, not hard to tweak start up (msconfig), disk clean up , regedit etc etc

It proves my line is quicker than sky are saying I usually only get 460kbs which is crap ,but the other day for about 45 mins my speed went up to believe it or not 6345kbs which was amazing ,can't explain why but it did it
#36
Sky are Rubbish worse then NTL, 1/3 of speed, takes minutes to send 50kb emails, have sent numerous complaints this just give s half price for months, keep getting connection was reset, no customer service, poor staff integrity, my emails to Sky are not replied to . Off to Virgin, much faster!! I'll never trust Sky news!
