A suspected burglar has been stabbed to death while trying to break into a house in Greater Manchester.

It is understood the man was attempting to get into a house in Ethel Avenue, Salford, on Wednesday night when the householder tried to defend the house.

The man, 26, is believed to have been carried away by other members of a balaclava-clad gang as they fled.

Serves the guy right, but no doubt the home-owner will get punished.

If it was neccessary then yes, if my being there startled the intruder and he ran off then I wouldn't go chasing with a knife.

Your home is your castle, You should have the rights to defend it with whatever means necessary.

Lol

I have have had toerag tied up under my stairs all night at the moment, he keeps asking for his mummy, had some fun last night, left the door under the stairs ajar with a good view of my coffe table, first i put my car battery on it with some jump leads, his face was a picture, later on the table i placed a chainsaw, hacksaws, and and some binbags on the table, he made a bit of a mess then, when i went to be his whimpering was keeping me away, so went down for a drink and i got a coke bottle put some tape round it and wrote ACID on it, he passed out when he saw that ,so i ended up sleeping like a baby, not sure what to do with him yet, any ideas would be appreciated.

I find this to be a difficult area. I felt a lot of sympathy for that farmer (Tony something?) who shot a burglar but went to prison for it. That seemed wrong. Also, I have no idea how hard a clunk on the head is enough to knock out a burglar but not kill him/her. I do not want to upset them so they come after me, but I also do not want it to kill them outright.

Same with stabbing, in the heat of the moment, you would just stick the knife in rather than aim it at the heart on purpose. Again I do not think that stabbing them 50 times is right either.

Luckily I have never been in this position and I hope I never am.

Always said, if someone tries to get into my house and I am there I will whack them! Not gonna wait till they are inside or to see if they have a knife. Will protect myself my girlfriend and my property if I have to.

Another alternative if he/she breaks a window is to make sure their arm gets cut to hell on the broken glass. :p

Should be allowed under reasonable force but in this country who knows!

What is the law on this peeps? I'm interested to see what criminal punishment I'd recieve with no priors and stabbed someone to death trying to hurt my castle an' that.

Some people say Enoch Powell was right. I say both he & Tony Martin was right.

They were charged as they were responsible for bringing the killed person with them into the home to burgle it. Now that is what I am talking about! Why is it that the yanks seem to have and administer justice along the lines that every right thinking person would like to see and we just play at the game?"

From the comments underneath the article - common sense at its best.

...Tony Martin wasnt protecting his property though.

This is a very contentious area. My views are mixed.

I think the law is that you may use "reasonable" force to defend your home or family. But what is deemed reasonable would be facts sensistive and will be different in every case.

You need to give yourself every chance of sympathy.

That means show regret - even if you do not mean it.
Do not boast about being a vigilante / Charles Bronson type
Do not over do the injuries - hit once or twice not 20 or 30
Say there was a struggle first
Plant a knife / tool on the other person if they had none.

You may still go to trial but you will have the jury on your side.

Baiting? Like leaving a gold chain in the hallway with the front door open?

In the Tony Martin case, I think he was burgled a few times and he simply had enough as the police wouldnt do anything. So he decided to wait for the burglar again with a shot gun. If I remember correctly Tony Martin shot him in the back as the burglar was running away.

All good mate. Sorry to see your boys go down, lost a lot of respect for McLeish the way he treated Brum, especially as they gave him full backing after you went down. Hughton will do a good job.

I have always said if I was on my own with the kids then I would just grab my kids and leave the burglers to get on with their business! its all insured and as long as I know my children are safe then that is my main priority.

But if my husband is home, like most nights then he has all sorts in his cupboard above his bed and I know he would use it to protect his home and family.

In other words, whatever you have "to hand" needs to be explainable by other means and not there solely to attack intruders with. I have a big 4-D Cell Maglite by the bed...in case of a power cut naturally...

If they managed to tie you up and one of them said they'd kill your family if you didn't put his willy in your mouth....

would you do it? To save your family?

To save my family I would say yes..........But I'd bite off!! I like your sexist perception....Train Drivers are all male. Females are well suited to driving trains.....No indicators or gears to crunch X)
