Ok, so Im currently an AS Media Studies Student and recently finished my first print production piece, which is my first experiences of photoshop.

If you could give me advice on how to improve the piece, either composition or anything else (There are some mistakes on this copy - its not the one i handed in, which i cant find)

Please be harsh but constructive on making it look more realistic.

The brief was to design a magazine cover for a music or fashion based mag. All content has to be your own and original.

Cheers - Bigpoppaad

No one... What grade do you think It deserves Between A and E

Is this based on a beginners magazine or a "world beaters". I say this as the picture suggests it is a beginners magazine as they look a bit too inexperienced and not too confident.

Wouldn't you have been better off using InDesign for this project?

The exam board requires we use Adobe Photoshop.

I think it matters as your production should see that the photo is adequate for the nature of the magazine.

It would be like a rock magazine having a photo on the front of Westlife.

I am no expert or anything but I would grade you somewhere in the middle. I am not keen on the photo, they lack detail but this could be because of the resizing? The greyscale doesn't look great in my opinion. The grey logo behind the Concerto brand seems a bit sharp and unsightly.

The main criticism is the layout of the page. A specific and eye catching focal point is missing and on a magazine front cover that is pretty important. Although the colours go together okay, it is too dark in my opinion. A brighter background would be better.

I like the logo though. You obviously put a lot of work into it and you will get better, although to me it looks as though you are very capable and this probably isn't the best work you can produce.

I was thinking this.

Also, the slanted text at the bottom looks a bit out of place when everything else is set squarely.

Finally, the model on the left looks like her hair has been cut straight across the top - is the Concerto logo on a black banner and layered above the layer with the model pics in it? If so then I'd put the logo layer underneath the model layer so you get the full shape of her head. Apologies if she has actually got a flat head!

Overall not too bad though. I'm no Photoshop expert but I'd be fairly happy with that myself.

I'm probably just being pernickety but I dont like the fact that yellow box that say's world exclusive review doesn't end on the page, it looks as though the cover has been cut short, does that make sense:?

OMG,your doing exactly the same thing as what i had to do for my first piece 9 years ago, (my year was the first to do AS lol, showing my age :w00t:)
I agree that the background colour is too dark, perhaps have a play around and have an actual background of where the girls are, id say the bottom half is fine but you may want to add to the "world exclusive review" you need to make me want to read more :)
Good luck and let us see the finished article :)
BTW its really good, as it is you should get a good grade:)
