I loaded a custom ROM in my phone just last week and here's the steps and the pitfalls you need to avoid:

This is the guide I used: http://zukfans.eu/community/threads/zuk-z2-bootloader-unlock.62/

So grab your phone S/N, install ADB and Fastboot on your PC, and install the Google and ZUK drivers.

Things to note:
If you're on Windows 8/10, you might have issues with driver signing enforcement. Bizzarely the drivers from Lenovo for the ZUK are unsigned and Windows does not like that. So you might need to disable this function. Thankfully, it's rather painless. http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/

Now to unlock the bootloader. You'll need to go to http://developer.zuk.com/bootloader but first you'll need to register to the site. I'm assuming that you're not in China or have a chinese SIM lying around so you'll need to register using email, which can be done here: https://passport.zuk.com/wauthen3/wauth/jsp/register.jsp?lenovoid.action=uilogin&lenovoid.realm=www.zuk.com&lenovoid.ctx=JTJGc3RvcmUlMkZ6Y29kZSUyRmluZGV4LmpodG1sJTNGbnVsbA&lenovoid.lang=null&lenovoid.uinfo=null&lenovoid.cb=http://www.zuk.com/login/logincallback.jhtml&lenovoid.vb=null&lenovoid.display=null&lenovoid.idp=null&lenovoid.source=browser:m.zuk.com?lenovoid.action=uilogin&lenovoid.realm=www.zuk.com&lenovoid.ctx=JTJGc3RvcmUlMkZ6Y29kZSUyRmluZGV4LmpodG1sJTNGbnVsbA&lenovoid.lang=null&lenovoid.uinfo=null&lenovoid.cb=http://www.zuk.com/login/logincallback.jhtml&lenovoid.vp=&lenovoid.display=null&lenovoid_idp=null&lenovoid.source=browser:m.zuk.com&lenovoid.thirdname=null&lenovoid.qrstate=null

Once you register, fill in the bootloader unlock form and you'll get an email with some Chinese writing, this is unimportant. Look at the attachment to that email and you'll find a unlock_bootloader.img file. Download it and you're in business.

Now I ran into trouble sending fastboot commands to my phone, just wouldn't be detected for some reason, no clue why. But I found this tool by mauronofrio: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/tool-tool-one-driversunlocktwrpfactory-t3432782 - works like a charm, you can use it to unlock the bootloader and then install TWRP on your phone.

Once you have TWRP then you can install whatever ROM that tickles your fancy, no problem. Personally I'm running Resurrection Remix by fedor917 https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/6-0-1-unofficial-resurrection-remix-t3504145 I tried CM14.1 but it's not stable enough for me and I much prefer RR. Plus it's Marshmallow so xposed works fine on it and plenty other stuff that hasn't reached Nougat yet. I really want Nougat-based Resurrection Remix on this phone and I've been working at porting it, but it's the first time I do this so it's quite a steep learning curve.

Oddly on the desktop site it includes this "One-year replacement warranty in United Kingdom" which seems to cost £10. I can't find a way of removing it manually but when I ordered it on my mobile last night I did not see it and only paid the listing price.

To receive incremental nightly updates for Mokee every day, pay $5 (30 CYN) and you won't have to update and flash manually. It's in Settings, "Mokee Centre" (just before last option in menu: About Phone).

Anyone do me a favour and see if barclays banking app will install on mokee and let you set it up? Usually don't work on custom roms and if not I will stick to Indian rom.

Installs fine in Mokee but then says it will not work on rooted devices and exits.

Thanks, thought it would fail. Barclays is so choosy. I miss custom roms but use the app every day so stuck on indian rom for that reason. Not that I have had any issues and get 7 hours sot so can't complain.

Real shame as otherwise I would switch. Suppose I could change banks lol! Barclays app has not worked on a few chinese phones with stock roms either.

Looked at some multi port dual amp (phone & tablets) quick chargers, Belkin Anker etc. This seemed to be the best seller currently:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k003cW4BoMY
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=syncwire+charger

£14 + £4 p&p = £18 on Amazon. With prime or over £20 shopped, then shipping's free. Although over 3 thousand reviews, still 5*, seems top best seller:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B011KPRE1G/

But bought for £13 delivered, on ebay. It was delivered in 48 hours in an Amazon packaging by Amazon courier today. Well worth it.

The zuk z2 don't support quick charge as far as I have read? I just have mains sockets switched to USB ones and never use chargers now as they are cheap and all are 2 amp so charge quickly anyhow.
#19
I saw lots of comments when lookin gfor ROMs saying so and others saying others. Did not and do not have time really to look into such things. Also lots of opinions about quick chargers, fast chargers etc, again no time to look into them either really, so can't say one way or another.

Re 1amp vs 2amp. again varying opinions re android and various hardware controls of adaptive ranges of charge input, cut offs, trickle vs surge etc etc. Can't really be bothered to read up on them either. Have a few dual chargers, use 2a for tablets and 1a for phones/MP3 players, just in case prolongs battery performance levels and life. YMMV.
#20
Not 100% but sure it don't support quick charge but it does charge pretty quick anyhow and always charge over night as its not run out on me yet in the last month. Great phone.
#21
Just use the stock charger that came in the phone box, it's rated at 2.5 amps. See this thread the guy did an extensive review and the stock charger is best overall.

Like I said I saw many saying it doesn't support quick chargers and others saying different in their experience. There are always opposing reviews etc wrt to charging, waste of time mostly imho. I don't waste time reading the usual walls of text re: charging, always something different later pops up.

If the bundled charger is 2.5a, probably won't use it again, maybe as emergency travel as its small. In my experience 2.5a chargers work brilliantly with phones but after 6 months, the phone battery starts losing charge fast, and it gets worse with time. Most agree with this and a minority disagree. I only did a charge yesterday with the new charger, I used the 1amp slot, not the 2.4a, it charged noticeably faster than the little 2.5a bundled charger!

Charges fine from the socket with USB and find it easier. I never keep a phone more than 6 months anyhow lol so never get to see batteries fail ha ha.

Yeah you said you wired whole house with USB sockets. I saw online dual amp usb ones too, not to mention sockets with usb & Ethernet ports.

I keep some phones, this is too small for some uses, will be good for 18 months at least with many apps, Wi-Fi radio etc. Unless spending several hundred pounds in six months on the 835 cpu which is not realistic, 821 for a few hundred is not much better than this.

Mokee or Indian ROM?

Mokee is used by many on this phone, worked on by mokee team in China where this phone is basically targeted at and why cheap for spec, most stable among custom ones probably, and the best maintained on a regular basis. Indian one is ok too.

I have tried multiple email addresses and still not getting the email for the bootloader unlock. I have registered fine and clicked the activation link in the registration email but just can't seem to get the bootloader email sent, I have tried in both Chrome and IE as well. Has anyone done it today? Maybe it is an issue that they are not sending them right now?

Also, should the webpage move to step 3 once the form is submitted or not?

Scratch that, just tried again and came through first time, I can only assume something went wrong the first time I tried and multiple attempts put a temporary block on me or something.

Running Fedor's Resurrection Remix build which contains Callmesuper kernel. Battery life is great. All functions I commonly use on this RR are working fine whereas I've had issues when using Lineage-based Roms on certain other phones.

I have noticed something, after installing the Indian rom the serial number looks odd, it has a few aaa' and bb's and some digits - all in total 6-7 characters, doesn't looks like the serial number on the back sticker that came with the phone. If I need to unlock the bootloader I might reflash the Chinese rom then see if the serial number changes before requesting the unlock via the Lenovo Chinese site?

thanks for the tip, I went for about 5 different cases in total, max £4.50 ish from Ali Express. Got loads of USB C stuff from the cheapest sellers on there too, Seeing as my phone's not going to arrive from China for another 3-4 weeks at a guess, I don't need them in a hurry.

Did anyone managed to get OTA update to Android 7.0 Nougat?
I have played the whole day but still getting a message: "No update available"?

Is it possible to get it with the official indian ROM?

I went trough:
1. 2.0.093 ST - original shop version
2. Unlocking Bootloader
3. 2.0.093 ST - official Indian ROM: Z2132_EN_OPEN_USER_Q01017.1_M_ZUI_2.0.093_ST_160811_qpst.
At this stage it did not wanted to do the update as it was Unlocked.
4. 1.9.044 ST - Chinese: Z2131_CN_OPEN_USER_Q01002.1_M_ZUI_1.9.044_ST_160523_qpst
Got it Locked again with this rom.
5. 2.0.093 ST - Again official Indian ROM: Z2132_EN_OPEN_USER_Q01017.1_M_ZUI_2.0.093_ST_160811_qpst.
Now OTA is checking but not finding anything.

So my question is: Is there a way to get to Nougat via official ROMs or is it via the Custom ROM only?
What procedure did you follow?

Thanks.

3. 2.0.093 ST - official Indian ROM: Z2132_EN_OPEN_USER_Q01017.1_M_ZUI_2.0.093_ST_160811_qpst.
Thanks.
Thanks that explains everything.

If z2 does not power on or does not even show lights when connected to charger, as it just happened:
Press the power button and hold for as long as possible. It should boot on.

Before that i tried pressing & holding power button + volume up (combo for android recovery mode)
and then those two + Back/home button.
Don't know if that had any effect, might try if you face prob.

Broke the wire inserted into phone sim slot opener, now have to open it up and fish out broken piece. Needs lots of pressure to open, will try paperclip next time, lost my clip-looking inserters that came with sim holders.

How to Open up Z2, don't try if you dont have to as it's glued and will scratch body:
