Hmm, thought about mining before but didn't think it would be worth it for the average user either. Might have to rethink. Thing is, is it true that it is really bad for the GPU and can/will kill it within months?

Don't want to ruin my PC for a few extra £s per week, if it's even that?

That said, I would have thought that so long as the cooling is good enough to stop it overheating at full load, it should be ok....

what's the best way to get started? Any tips/links

Well that's it- i just don't think it is worthwhile for me but i found some interesting ideas on Reddit when i searched for my "GPU plus Bitmining" so there is quite a lot of ideas out there.
chapchap
Mad prices! Looking into it i can't see mining with a one GPU set-up worthwhile (unless your have free electricity and don't mind having your PC/GPU on the go 24/7). Looks like maybe 2 quid a day in today's climate.

At the current price I don't know why anyone would pick up an rx580 over a GTX 1070.

I'm in the market for a new card (mine died last week), I've noticed a lot of the card deals of late are cold, is there any specific reason why? They look like good value on the surface, am I missing something? Anyone have a few pointers when looking for good deals? (Currently looking for a 1070).
Not sure about other people, but I would never recommend this cheap blower style card. I also got a 1070 for sub £300 months ago, so not sure this is a great price for the blower card.
How did you manage to get one for sub 300?
Amazon warehouse with 20% off offer, was like £270.

Why is this cold? Seems to be decent price for something that is actually in stock.
sell rx480, get this, don't regret.

Upto 3 weeks dispatch time. Mining bubble would of probably burst by then and the 1070s will be back to normal price. Also Vega!
Would of it? You seem like a smart guy. Thanks for the insight

This is not really much of a deal, £179.99 seems expensive for a 1060. I would expect the 60 series of cards to be priced at less than £140.

3Gb vram is not enough anymore. Pay a bit more for the 6Gb version, you won't regret it.
hot but you are in the wrong site, here are mostly ATI and AMD fans
Does this Feature bold designs and bright colors, an exciting new series possessing a spirit of fierce individualism that charges every gaming experience with thrilling energy ??
other than that, yes good.
This isnt a bad price considering the crazy prices for Radeons. I assume its cold because people are comparing it to gaming terms, not mining. However, have some heat OP, this is the cheapest so far!

It's been this price for weeks tbh, I've had my eye on it but not 100% convinced, tried the keyboard in Curry's and it didn't feel all that good.
Ruffuz - what's better about the one you posted other than it has an SSD? The one in the deal has a better processor no?
Ahh, I see it has a NVIDIA graphics card. I guess if you game then that one is better.

SSD will give much better experience than slightly faster cpu.
Graphic card is just a small bonus.

2GB of RAM is a sticking point with today's bloated software. The screen is poor on this netbook with very shallow viewing angles.
I would not recommend this laptop, I have one with equivalent specs from Lenovo bought at £149.99 from Argos last year. For very basic needs like reading and writing emails and word documents it is fine (which is what I use it for) but it is very slow with even the simplest web browsing - it can only cope with 1 or 2 tabs open of Internet Explorer or Edge, don't even try Chrome lol.
This is currently £169 from ao.com , complete with the year of Office.
With only 32GB of storage does it even have space to install office? Plus that's only a year's subscription rather than a full version.

I'd spend the extra on a mainstream laptop and Office 2016. It'll cost you twice as much up front, but it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Great price. I got this for £130 originally so a great deal here.
If you have the time, patience and skill I would highly recommend a stand alone router paired with an access point the results are so much better. For this I would recommend the ER-X, the edgerouter x is a very sophisticated bit of kit for the money. If you have experience with the CLI on cisco stuff you'll have no problems, this is not for beginners.

I brought a cheap talk talk router off ebay for under £10 as my AP, this setup is cheaper than the Asus RT-N66U and likely performs better. However it is quite a technical configuration so not for everyone, if you're interested take a look at the edgerouter x and it's features here.

Deal back on....

Still available as used like new in pristine packaging from amazon warehouse .... £53.

Slightly bizarre answers / comments from Asus support in the Amazon reviews basically saying its xx years old and unlikely to be better than the one you get from your ISP !!

Funny that Asus are saying that. But it is true. There is no magic hardware or design in these things. They are all limited to a power of 30mW. All the six or eight antenna, huge spaceship design routers are a bit of a con IMO.

I spent £170 on a TP-Link AC2800 which was horrific, drop outs, poor wifi stability blackouts.

Went back to my trusty asus and openreach modem.Bought a 2nd one to use as an AP.

Yes I tried this too and found it to be at best no better than the Sky router. I did notice that one or two of the expensive routers really are unimpressive wifi wise.

I accept that similar laptops with the Nvidia 1050 are about £150 more expensive.

If cost is a factor, you might want to wait for a laptop with Nvidia's brand new entry level MX150 (aka Nvidia 1030) Pascal-based GPU. Apparently this cheap GPU comes with 2GB of DDR5 and performs on a par with the 960M but with a much lower power draw.

Of course, the way the £ is falling away now, you might just want to buy this now while our beloved currency is actually worth something.

You really want the 10 series gtx graphics as these older 9 series are much worse.
Appreciate your advice, obvious that the 1060 is better, but I don't need it for my use
Posted the deal because in my opinion is a good deal for the spec, not because it's the best spec.
Sure your advice will help others though
There's about a £400-£500 price increase for a 10 series, so comparing is a waste of time.
For the price this is still a good deal

My main use case for using Chromebit's over Chromecasts/firesticks is they are one of the few devices of this type that support WPA-Ent / 802.1x so you can use them on enterprise wifi networks. Worth remembering if you are taking one to Uni with you if you stay in residences.

Steam's own figures of nearly 1 % increase / month for 1080p, CURRENTLY, verses 0.02 % increase / month for 1440p would indicate you are bull **** way beyond your understanding of the subject;

Can someone tell me why would I need this? What will this do that my free modem won't.

1 Range is much better. I replaced 3 AP around the house with this one unit. Signal now cover whole house and garden and works 3 houses away! This is down to radio design on the PCB, real antenna Vs the "bent paperclip or PCB track stuff on the ISP modems"
2 Speed (concurrent Wifi usage >1 device stream HD. Unlike the cheap units from ISP this units performs lots of tasks in hardware. Take a look at what's inside the box: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/63686-asus-rt-ac68u-pce-ac68-802-11ac-review-2.html
3 Less CPU load on your modem so improved upload / download speed on your modem.
4 No need to change your home network when you move ISP (e.g. I jump from BT/Plusnet and back again whenever I can to get the cheapest rate / max cashback) when this happens I do not need to change ANY hardware just one config page on the ASUS for my username / password for PN/BT
5 Reliability is much better as the unit has more memory / CPU
6 Fast Gigabit Ethernet switch and high capacity internal buses to carry content at wire speed. The ISP modems often use USB2 as the internal bus!
7 USB3 support
8 On board applications (e.g. Torrent, Anti Virus, etc)
9 Set up and manage QoS
10 LAN IP DHCP independent of ISP hardware making it EASIER to switch ISP
11 Power supply is high quality and will last running 24x7x365 mine has been operating for years often the ISP PSU go bad after a couple of years
12 Real world gigabit speed over WiFi e.g. ASUS PCI card if you need high speed PC access without cables.

Is the wifi range on these much more superior in comparison to the free routers like skyQ ?
Yep, see my comment below this post.

I bought this to replace my Homehub 6, we live out in the sticks and can only get 21mb broadband.
The BT HH6 managed 20 down and 1.67 up. I was shocked that this only managed 17 down and a pathetic 0.67 up.
It's on the latest firmware so I'm at a loss why it's so poor in conparison

How have you connected this to your modem? How did you make the speed tests (What device: OS Version, Browser and wire / wireless connection) you need to be quite organised when testing. The variance you see could be explained by many factors. I'd recommend 1) Testing with you HH and a wired connection to a laptop use the Google speed test not Ookla type "google speed test" into Google's home page to access the tool 2) Remember that time of day, day of week matter for speed tests. 3) Your modem will report the connection speed of your link this will be in the HH system log 3) Make sure you turn OFF the Wifi on your HH. 4) Check what channel you are using on the ASUS best to run a site survey. 5) Which frequency WiFi were you testing this on 2.4gHz 6) You need to stop ALL traffic on your network before testing. 7) TO BE CLEAR if you have a 17mb line this unit will not help with that. It will provide better Wifi (range, speed and throughput) than other APs, but this depends on the device, OS, the remote service and the type of protocol in use.

My question is why didn't external graphics cards take off. Ultrabook by day, plug into external graphics card by night via open source interface.

Its not as easy as it seems :(. Its not masss produced yet and as such expensive.

I'd prefer the same with out the graphics card but other bells and whistles. Do people really look to mid-priced laptops for high end gaming? All I ever reading about PC gaming is how building a rig or at least buying a desktop is the way and laptops are always a silly option to take. Take out the graphics card and for the same price something more useful coule be put in to make this a more attractive mid-price option.

I've always been the same, but I bought an Alienware due to limited space, being away for work 1/4 of the year and the resale value which desktops don't have (less you scrap them individually). I got a good deal on the Alienware but otherwise yeah desktops are 100% better - it's just most people are nervous at building one when it's mega easy now. I'll be building one when I move to a bigger place.
CarlottaMonroe
A second hard drive for more storage? A better screen/processor, etc, more RAM? I'm just guessing - Not that any of those are bad in this laptop,. I just wonder why a graphics card in a laptop is such a selling point compared to other things. Unless you really are gaming on a laptop, in which case spending more than this is surely mandatory any way for a decent experience?

The graphics card and other specs on this laptop are good enough for running a lot of games. You aren't obviously going to run AAA games at 1080p with a playable framerate but the appeal here is the portability. If someone wants a gaming rig a desktop is always the best option but this will give you acces to a lot of games to play on the go if you need it.

There are plenty options out there for what you are asking. Drop the graphics and get more storage and better processor etc. £550 is a fair budget for an everyday laptop. It's going to get minimum requirements for a gaming laptop though. Hope you find what you want. It's a minefield picking the right one!

What would you prefer over a graphics card? What would you class as more useful?

I've just bought this for £779 off ebuyer got it next day delivered and a AAA game so hey not that bothered with all the delivery wait etc
Damn. I don't want to collect my MSI card now. This was the card I wanted; second only to the FTW3.

Update: Cancelled my MSI delivery and have ordered this.
Google is saying conversion comes to £679 yet Amazon is saying £691. Crooks :/

You can get the Aorus (MPN: GV-N108TAORUS-11GD) if you prefer that for only £638-640 from Amazon.it inc shipping. Which is every bit as good as this card, if you don't fancy paying Asus tax.

At this sort of level the cards build quality and more so how it looks play a big part of deciding which to go for (as shallow as that is).

Key difference here is:

ASUS Official Certified Refurbished.
I think people vote cold on this because if you are comparing second hand eBay items like laptops there are literally 1000s of better deals, even though it does have a warranty and should really compared to a new item.

It's a pretty good deal but that is why it will go cold.

These Core M processors are pretty slow too, with about 3rd gen i3 performance. The main redeeming feature for this laptop is the QHD screen but at 13.3 you have to ask what is the point?
fish323
Mercy? Are you kidding? They are ruthless b*****ds here. I didn't vote as I have no idea if it is a good deal or not. But, let me assure you, the numbers mean absolutely nothing.

Not sure what is wrong with this. It seems a little expensive but the specs do seem worth the price. I guess the price is still a little dear for an almost 2 year old GPU.
Looks good to me. For that price, it is hard to find a decent looking laptop, HD screen, discrete graphics, light, quick, SSD. People are too whiny on Hotukdeals, complaining the laptop has an old CPU/GFX card, but at this price, I doubt anyone could find better. Newer CPU/GFX will cost more than this. So hot from me

what was the point in this comment? you told me why Flubit aren't allowed on HUKD then went on to make an obvious statement of prices go up and down... £597 for FE is still a really good deal regardless of the AMP deal. I still don't see the point in that spout of "I found a good deal before you! and it has a better coole so nyeeeehhhhhh" haha.

You took that completely the wrong way, I was saying that the risk of using Flubit vs. the saving offered may not be deemed as 'worth it' to a lot of folk. As for the Zotac deal, that would have been at the same time as your FE deal, so was a completely relevant comparison, and the Zotac has a 5 years warranty, not just a much better cooler. If you don't think a 5 warranty and superior cooler is worth £20, then that's fine but many other people would disagree.

Well you all could have taken advantage of this deal when it was running. I posted it but HUKD removed it almost instantly because they dont like Flubit? Thanks for letting the word get out HUKD. I'll enjoy my FE for £102 less than original release price and still a he'll of alot cheaper than everywhere else.https://ibb.co/fAr2sa

It's because with Flubit they can't tell you which retailer will be used, and if they are actually any good. So having a deal like that would mean it's not going ot be always equal. Looking at when you got your FE 11-12 days ago, then you did OK, but the FE was about £610 from a feew of the EU Amazon sites, and I posted a Zotac AMP! deal for less than £619 delivered, which trounces the FE card for £20 less.

Went to Coventry (Alvis Park) today, none to be found. The lad checked other stores too.
for the people that does not read or noticed what I wrote:
on the 22 of May, the system in Fulham was saying 1 in stock in WIMBLEDON, OXFORD STREET AND TWICKENHAM but you can check other stores more far away if you live in central London. Obviously this is a National offer on the very last display unit which is unused and brand new. Also note that you might find the 2gb version at just over £86 and there was 1 in Fulham bridge available on the 22 of May

The 7300hq is a great cpu and for gaming with a GTX 1060 it's a great match. If your going to go i7 you may as well go for the 1070 etc it becomes expensive.... This machine will run all games at high settings and the G-Sync works wonders.... Heat added...

It's a great gaming laptop for the price, so heat from me.

That being said, I agree with the above poster. Given that you cannot upgrade most laptop's core performance components (CPU and GPU) to extend their shelf life, it is absolutely worth shelling out an extra couple of hundred quid (or less, more likely than not) for an i7-based machine of similar specs, the hyperthreading of an i7 will undoubtedly extend the longevity of your laptop's ability to play games well as developers are already beginning utilise more than four cores/threads. You can pick up this exact laptop with the i7-7300HQ processor for £170 more at PCSpecialist.

What a deal! Absolutely wipes the floor with a PS4 Pro for £100 less. And that's not even factoring in free online, cheaper games, not paying £30 a pop for "remasters" of last-gen games, and the ability to upgrade when and as you want. Wow.

Pretty sure most console games are cheap as chips within weeks of launch....with maybe the exception of gta5. I've certainly never paid £30 for the latest releases and have a huge back catalogue so any games I want are even cheaper by the time I'm ready for them.

For £5 it's worth it if you're throwing it in a bag or what have you. You'll have to cut a flap off to make it fit though, and it doesn't work in 'tent' mode (so I take it off)
Speaker sound is adequate 90% of the time but if I'm watching a film or the football on it I'll use a bluetooth speaker.
Ahh, looks good! What flap do you have to cut off?
I'm hoping I can boost the volume a tad using an app. Honestly though, I'm not seeing many complaints about the volume anyway. (After watching and reading a bunch of reviews)

It's the one that goes 'underneath' the tablet. Basically, the hinge is in the wrong place.

hi guys can anyone point me in the right direction for a gaming laptop or desktop for a 10 year old?

For starting out, I'd go with something like this. ASUS is a good brand, it's a fairly good price, good hardware, spec should be more than enough, and comes with a couple of freebies too. As a starting point, this is what I would look at

hi guys can anyone point me in the right direction for a gaming laptop or desktop for a 10 year old?

I've researched it. £1700 minimum for a decent specced GTX 1070 laptop (if you are lucky with a deal)£2200 for a GTX 1080 and more like £2500 for a decent spec, add a 4k screen and add another £1000 on top. Top end Laptop gaming is quite simply horrendously overpriced for what you get for your money. Not to mention the very real issues with thermals that inevitably becomes an issue with them over time and the complete lack of an upgrade path. It will never, ever come close to a desktop.

Not really. I game with a 290X which allows high frame rates at high/ultra and 1080p. The 290X is equal to a 970gtx, which is equal to mobile 1060. Saying a 1070 or 1080 is there he minimum needed is crazy. A 1050 will be enough for some at 1080p and a 1060 would almost be perfect.

You can have a laptop, or you can have a gaming pc. But not both together.
Do a little bit of research into the mobile 1070 and 1080 and you will realise how very wrong you are. By the way this deal is pretty rubbish if you are buying it as a gaming laptop, 1050 isn't that fantastic at this price.
