You just have to keep watching Ryanair for offers. I just took carry on luggage and they didnt even check the weight. Car hire is cheap but if you decide to take the CDW it becomes expensive.
where are you getting £20 rtn flights to Cork?
I use Irish ferries but not sure this is so good a deal at £198 return. For £368 you can get a cottage holiday from them with return ferry which works out at about £30 per night for a 3/4 bed cottage.
Its much cheaper to fly and hire a car then get your own accommodation. Look for a flight deal. Cost me £20 return to Cork and car hire was cheap. Ferries are the only option when I take the kids but its way too expensive by comparison.

Picked mine up for £10 in Sainsburys months back, but i'd be all over this if I hadn't.
Did you care to share that deal? Or just tell us about it when the op finds the cheapest its been?
You sound upset. Why would I share the deal when it's a store specific, last on the shelf deal?
funny that they are always the last on shelf and lots of store specific deals appear on here and turn up elsewhere.

£28 each way on a boat taking 90+ minutes or £30 each way on the channel tunnel in 35 minutes.... I know which I would choose.
£30 each way in the tunnel?
When?

Going at 5pm, returning 7pm same day no doubt :)

Never seen them that cheap without Tesco vouchers!
Managed to get our ferry for three weeks' time cheaper by using the P&O Daily Mail promotion (ewww) and getting a £22 return 'overnight' fare from Dover to Calais. We're just not using the return leg, and then we're coming back from Dunkerque via DFDS. Slightly convaluted but got peak time fares for £66 return!
I've crossed with P&O a few times for less than £25 return. DFDS seems to be consistently significantly more expensive offers or not. Why would anyone bother with them?
Thanks! Just booked for about £40 less than the prices last week.

I'm bored of arguing EU......but let me just make clear the comment I made regarding stretched public resources. I was referring to the austerity measures currently being invoked by the Government.

What I'm trying to say is, voting out, wont change the situation.

The austerity measures in place are due to the national deficit (which has barely moved) The debt created in this country has been created by two things ; out of control capitalism, being the bankers. Also, getting involved in military conflicts, which goes back all the way to 1990 when we got involved in the Kuwait conflict. Tony psychopath Blair spent billions looking for WMDs that don't exist.

This has had the knock on effect we see today, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing their countries by any means possible. It is impossibly sad......we can all vote what we like, the politicians will all still do what they do. Make lots of money......

racist
you don't know the meaning of the word racist, idiot
Head in ar.5e is highly appropriate.
say what you like, folks like you make me want to be sick. I imagine you sit around (ironically) spouting off how disgusting the Holocaust was.
Then start banging on you want immigrants out. just another racist xenophobe who'll use some woolly statistical argument, why.
your original post is disgusting, calling homeless, starving migrants, forced to run from their wartorn homes 'parasites'.
Yet again care in the community fails...... and I've concluded that your head is stuffed quite a way up your ar5e, but it seems fully planted if you think that lot at Calais are genuine refugees....they have marched through many safe countries to get to the percieved 'land of milk and honey'......... so wipe your excrement out of your eyes and start accepting fact......idiot.
Oh and check youtube for videos of car/lorries being attacked by these poor withered , malnourished (6ft + and at least 12 stone) 'victims'
I can assure you I just liked your post by accident.
Your bigoted blinkered view reads like your typical Dail Mail reader, no doubt your probably vote UKIP as well, and chant 'En-ger-land' a lot while drinking Euro lager (ironic).
Fact is you know absolutely **** all about these people, only what you choose to believe, because that's what you want to believe. You've pigeon holed all migrants as 'parasites', from your cosy little life in UK, where you enjoy safety, and freedom. Why shouldn't everyone have that, eh?
You seriously think every migrant at Calais is of the same mindset, and sees uk as some sort of pot of gold at end of the rainbow? Also, you really think voting out will change any of that!?
I don't want criminals in UK, but I'd take any hard working decent minded migrant over some of the scum roaming our streets. Britain is full of dole dossing scum, who feed off the benefit system, meanwhile NHS, Schools, Police force and all other public services are stretched as thin as butter, and completely under resourced.
We are in middle of Global Economic downturn, and any that thinks voting out of Eurooe is going to improve matters is deluded. Fat Boris the patriot, thinks he's a modern day Winston Churchill with all his patriotic no ensue. He's a bag of wind, completely empty. Churchill was a man of action.......
I hate Cameron, but Boris is now putting the boot in his own life long friend, what does that say about the mans morals? All he is doing is relying on all the brain dead, xenophobic imbeciles to vote out, so he can get a crack at the Tory hot seat.
There are absolutely no Economic fundamentals to support exiting Europe. 60 years ago hundreds of thousands of British soldiers fought for peace, something we all now take for granted. Being part of Europe helps sustain that for the future....we are one of the Economic superpowers in Europe, arguably the biggest, staying in will allow us to lead the way.
So if you're saying that you don't want the bad eggs in, then we're in complete agreement. I just didn't like your comment calling migrants parasites.....I'm a humanist, you can laugh at that, but there it is.

Ok brainiac, you claim I know nothing about these migrants, insinuating you do... well done you. If I had been shot at, bombed, had family and friends murdered, I wouldn't then march through many friendly countries, I'd stop at the first safe haven.....but hang on, these safe havens don't have reputations for being cash cows.

Now, who said our resources are already overstretched, errrrrrrr........you.

I've been to Guernsey/Jersey four times with Condor. I've tried to get there another six times with Condor and, er, did not. Allow plenty of leeway for cancellations/ high winds/ mechanical gremlins/ leaves on the track.
Our nightmare when returning from Jersey via Guernsey was having to accommodate 2 planeloads of flyers whose flights were cancelled due to fog!
My wife still has nightmares about a condor crossing to Jersey, and it was nearly 20yrs ago!.

I took a day trip a month or so ago to Boulogne Farmers Market, I highly recommend it.

Took an early ferry (7:30am ish) over to Calais followed by a short 25 mins drive along the coast to Boulogne Sur Mer, arriving around 10am French time. Parking in the centre of town in a nice new underground car park was about £3 for the whole day.

There is a farmers market every Saturday which runs until about midday. Amazing fruit, veg, meat, fish, eggs and of course cheese, all locally produced and at great prices. The people were very friendly and welcoming despite my terrible attempts at French.

The town has few high end cheese, chocolate and wine shops if you're after something special but they're expensive, similar or maybe more than London prices (exchange rate doesnt help).

We grabbed a nice lunch in town took a short drive to the massive Auchan hypermarket where we stocked up on cheap wine and more food.

Returned to Dover by about 5.30pm. Amazing and super easy day out.

There's also a beach and aquarium in Boulogne if you want something different to shopping. We'll definitely be going again.

Do we get Duty Free again if we leave the EU?

If we leave the EU you can be guaranteed the UK govt will impose limits on how much booze you can bring in - like they do with every non-EU country.
The advantage of Calais is that tax on wine in France is so low compared to the UK so you can save a fortune during a day trip if you buy in bulk.
Do we get Duty Free again if we leave the EU?
Calais was a lovely town with lots of good shops and restaurants. I haven't stopped in the town in recent years, but as this deal mentions vehicles, it might be best to think of it more as a trip to the shopping centre and hypermarket. A shame for the residents and retailers of Calais town centre, but I can't see there being a lot of demand to 'download our two hour walking tour'.
jasee
I think I'd need to be bribed with more than six bottles of wine to go therehttp://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03317/calais-france-cent_3317122b.jpg
Don't go then, leave all the bargains to me, and plenty of others. I travel through Calais a lot and have personally had no problems. Of course some people will have had 'experiences' but you may as well give up crossing the road because 'something may happen'.
Can be a good day out, lots to see and do. Plus, the bonus of some shopping.

I really don't understand why, when someone has clearly gone to a lot of trouble to put a deal together and share it amongst us do people have to snipe? If you don't like the deal can't you just appreciate the effort someone has gone to and move on? There will be - or possibly have been - deals that the very people who are bitching would probably have liked that probably never made it to the site, as those such as rachelandgromit have probably become fed up and discouraged. The prognosis for this fine site is that eventually it could, in all probability end up being pointless and then defunct as those who really care about bringing deals to our attention say "F*ck it - I can't be arsed any more."

Can you just let go of the ego for a bit and just not respond if you don't like it?

I just want to say, for what it's worth, thank you so much rachelandgromit and those others who work hard bringing us amazing deals for the effort you have clearly put in to putting this together - and don't be discouraged by those miserable bell-ends who can't afford to compensate for the size of their manhoods (-or womanhoods for that matter) by buying high performance sports cars.
I suppose, if they could they wouldn't be looking at hotdealsuk anyway.
Cheers.

This holiday would be rubbish. You'd need a holiday to get over it. From my experience it takes two weeks to adjust to the jet lag. Better idea would be just go to one of the islands and chill there for two weeks in a fancy resort. If you're going to travel like that you need to do it over at least a month or more.
It's rubbish because of jet lag?
You are such an idiot.
Amongst other reasons, yes. Unless you know me personally, how do you know I'm an idiot? More than likely you are just an a*hole shouting off your mouth with personal insults..
I don't know you personally and I'm glad I don't.
More than likely you are the idiot aswell as the a**hole for shouting your mouth and calling this deal "rubbish" just because of the jet lag.
I like to hear your other reasons as to why this deal (in your opinion) is "rubbish"...
.
This deal is not rubbish it's actually very good and I voted hot. The holiday would be rubbish. You're getting two things confused however you wouldn't realise that as you are more than likely an idiot.
Lol, you're just going back on your own words now. Pathetic you are.
Still haven't gave me the reason why you think the holiday is rubbish... still waiting.
I know you're likely thicker than 4x2 but let me reiterate a couple of reasons that were in my original post that you would have picked up on if you had basic comprehension. First, this holiday (not deal) would be rubbish because jet lag takes 2 weeks to get over and it is only a 2 week break. Secondly, the itinerary would likely need a month or more to do realistically. Other reasons are that Thailand is a bit unpredictable with the weather, food poisoning or even transport easily postponing plans for a day or more and impacting the tight schedule.
Two wks to get over let lag?? Are you for real?? So all of the 4 million that visit the US every year, land, then take 2wks to adjust?? I flew to Sau Paulo 2yrs ago, then flew up to the Amazon the next day, then flew to Rio 4 days later, then onto Belo 4 days after that, and back to Rio 5 days later-was fantastic! This is an EXCELLENT trip! I presume you're over 60 and thinks Hoeseasons is an adventure!!
Yes, thank you!

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. This holiday is meant for exploring and for someone to complain about jet lagged is absolutely ridiculous.

If you're going to travel outside your country and outside your time zone, of course you're going to get jet lag! It's freaking common sense.

At the P&O site they are also doing £29 day trip with 6 bottles of wine. Remember that you can usually travel within one sailing of your designated sailing time (unless there are weather related problems then they will fit you in when they can) so book with this in mind. I usually book for an afternoon trip and turn up to take the sailing around 11:15 (saves £5).

worth going for a day out you say ..... time you read the news about calais

Don't go to Calais then, go to Bruges as suggested or 1 of the other cities within easy reach.

What's Calais like as a place?!
If you want to do a shopping trip it is quite good. You have Auchan and City Europe where you can find good deals. Dunkirk is not too far away (20 minutes) where you can visit as well. Lille is around an hour away with the Belgium within easy reach.

If you want a day by the sea there is over 20 miles of sandy beach.
Why is this £25PP and not £25PC?

Is there much to do on a Sunday? I seem to recall the whole of France closing down for Sundays.
Yes, France is closed on a Sunday, except restaurants and small shops it is like the UK 30 years ago

I wish it was like that now.....Sunday to relax or spend with family
https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france

There are large numbers of illegal migrants in and around Calais, who may seek to enter the UK illegally. Violent incidents have occurred between migrant groups, police and a small number of members of the public. Don’t approach the camps or groups of migrants. There have been incidents of items being thrown at vehicles on the approach to Calais Port from the A16. In those circumstances you should keep moving when safe to do so, or stop and call 112 if it’s not safe to proceed. Keep vehicle doors locked in slow moving traffic and secure your vehicle when it’s left unattended.

I hope everyone would read that thread before commenting. There are numerous other threads very similar, Sharm El Sheikh was one I also recall.
Sounds like a great trip to me if I didn't have kids I would be up for it reminds of the greeknisland hoping I did back in the 80/90s
I did a similar trip 30 years ago. We just got return tickets to Athens and made the rest up as we went along - do not advise this though as we did end up sleeping on the floor most of the time! I have travelled the world but still rate this trip as one of the best things I've ever done.

Migrants - No thanks
There won't be any migrants on any of the Cyclades they're too far away from mainland Europe!
Not true - have been many of the Cyclades breached...

Yes but on very sporadic occasions not enough to ruin a holiday. I would wager a guess that there have been less number of days spent on these islands by migrants in the Cyclades , than in any other European country by percentage of population in that country in relation to that of the population of the Cyclades . Which basically means no effect to your holiday 8)

I received an email from them on 27/1/16 saying
Dear Customer,
Offer now extended to 29 February!
Why not beat the winter blues and save a massive 20% off all Belfast to Cairnryan and Liverpool motorist fares? Get booking and have something special to look forward to: a Valentine's break with that certain someone, a relaxing Easter getaway, or why not plan your summer holiday?
Whichever you choose, you can now book right up until 29 February
so, it seems it depends on which route you use, when discount ends.
Yes, I received this also but must admit I forgot all about it yesterday when posting. There is probably a different discount code behind it.

Hi, great read OP. Did you take into consideration the taxi fares to and from the airports and ferries? Does anyone know how much it's likely to be? When I have travelled like this before it has been the most expensive part of my holiday. Thanks 8)

Yes the hotels I have chosen pic you up from the airports, I've stayed in all the hotels I've chosen and it's free pick up to and from the airports and ports :)

Is Greece really a safe place to travel with all the austerity there poor country has faced?
Spent 2 amazing weeks in Rhodes last August never saw any of the troubles the press had "reported" on and the Greeks are so friendly, booked again for August. Don't believe the hype, lol.
Thanks for your reply! How much spending money do you reckon a couple will need?
Depends on how much you drink and eat really, me personally with the Mrs and 16yr old son in tow i budget for 150-200 euro a day.

oooooo spending money costs more than the holiday! Im sure i could cheap it out!
Cheers anyway
Santorini is a fantastic place. Great for families, couples and honeymooners
A nice trip........ if you do not have the common sense of booking your own.
The web has all the tools you need for this kind of trip and I am struggling to understand how this is a hot deal.

I can't see where I've gone wrong, can you help me out, I'm having a blonde moment. So where I've put €11pp the conversion is £15.84pp (that's converting €22 to £ using Google).

Thank you Rachel and Gromit. Food for thought and great memories from this summer when I did similar (not on this budget! )

The circumvesiana is the train between naples and sorrento / pompeii I think. Has an awful reputation if you research it. I didn't have any issues last year. Keep an eye on your possessions though obviously.

How long does that ferry journey take on the cold north sea?

All night, but you're asleep for most of it.
How long does that ferry journey take on the cold north sea?
I got flights and hotel for £200 for 4 nights in Amsterdam (10th - 14th january). I'd much rather go for four nights and pay £100 each than £39 for 5 hours and the flight is only 80 minutes
I've done this mini cruise 3 times now plus 1 time with a night in hotel. great price the dearest I've ever paid was 40.
people complain about only 5 hours but where else can you go for a city with 2 nights accommodation for 30 quid! would cost me 30 quid just the journey to and from Newcastle!
