I got one of these recently, its still possible to put android on it, but it auto updates once connects to wifi so you have to install staright away....

Can you tell me how? Pretty Please! Mine arrived from Amazon today (Monday).

I've owned one of these for a while now and have found it to be great value for the money. Downgraded the firmware to 5.1.2 and then locked out the firmware upgrades. Rooted and installed play store. Runs most music apps and IPTV perfectly.

How would one go about doing this? Do you have instructions you can share?

Never managed to get this to work on VLC for me, always have to use BS Player to connect to the home nas. Care to share how you do it.
Sorry - for some reason HUKD didn't flag I had a response.
Nothing special to get it working for me. Open VLC, and using the hamburger menu (top left), select the local network option. I'm using an older WD MyBook Live, which has a Twonky server on it - any content in the public shares then just play.

Smart thinking Batman. :-)

i struggle to consider anything a deal when its just the normal price. these things are not anything special, they are cheap tablet devices with low specs at a low price, nothing special.
I bought two of these for my monsters. Since then we have had no less that 3 replacements - all have been new and all have been no quibble. The charging port seems to be a weakness but for the money they are excellent! Fire OS is quite locked down but that's exactly what I wanted for my kids to keep them out of harms way - far more suitable for minors than android iMO
wakkaday
If I had a damaged one will they replace with new one

No, they will replace it with a factory refurbished device of the same model.
My kid has a Amazon fire, when it dies i will not buy one again. Android is better. The internal storage of the fire is rubbish and it fills it up with everything for itself before it even lets you put anything on it, the amount of system settings you have control over is limited, they are plagued with charging problems, mines having problems with that despite changing the usb cable. Amazon will not replace them only ask you to send them in for repair etc, I've had to factory reset it twice because it goes strange and refuses to read the sd card that everything else in the house is happy to.

Just get a android tablet and download the Amazon app then you have the best of both.

Ignore my last comment. These do come with ads!
I thought the John Lewis ones don't come with the ads?
If anything it's a better deal to buy at Amazon as their returns and customer care will last longer than the 2 years at John Lewis. A proper cold deal
Where is the savings?
Technically not a hot deal, as it's the standard price for these tablets. True they have new features, but not a hot deal.

Thinking of getting one to replace my Nexus 7 second gen, which has more or less given up now. I did buy iPad Air 2 but couldn't get on with it at all, it's back in box in cupboard now. How easy is it to put Google Play on it, I'm not to tech savvy with Tablets. Only other option I can see at this price are Lenovo models.

Can anyone tell me, if you install the SkyGo app on this, can you then stream it to the TV using Miracast?

I have a MacBook Pro and iPhone, but can't stream NowTv or sky or even amazon to the TV using Airplay. Which is rubbish as I'm stuck in a hotel, but the TV is mounted in the wall, and the only way to connect to it it using Airplay or Miracast

So if it says with Alexa does that mean it acts like the Echo? I could tell it to turn on the light and it will?
Probably although not sure if it listens for a wake word, Since they added Alexa to the fireTV I was able to ask it the same commands as the Echo Dot but the difference being I had to hold the voice search button on the fireTV remote to activate alexa.
tafarrant

No, it doesn't start up with voice commands. So you have to have it switched in the first place for it to respond to Alexa commands.

Just got mine from Amazon today - not sure if they have old stock to shift, but mine came with OS 5.0.1 from Nov 2015 - which was just what I wanted so I could flash a different ROM! From what I read online, it's down to luck - some people have received ones with the latest OS which can't be changed.

how easy is it to root a fire tablet?
Can't be
Wrong.
They are absolutely infuriatingly slow though, I wanted to throw mine every time I tried to use it. Thankfully some absolute mad-man bought mine for what I paid for it from me on eBay.
Wrong-ish . . . . . .Since version 5.3.2 you have not been able to root these. It's currently on 5.3.3.0 and they auto update (it can't be stopped on this version of the Fire tablet). I bought mine 2 weeks ago from JL and it came with 5.3.2.1 on it. I'd expect the same or later from Amazon direct.
So if rooting is important to you it's a bit of a lottery with slimmer chance of success with every passing day.
However, as others have mentioned, you can easily install Google services and the Play store on it. Depends what you want out of rooting it really.
Mine turned up with the language as German and running 5.0.3.0. So rooted it anyway. What is the best rom to flash onto this to help the battery life?
I'm running nexus firehttps://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/rom-fire-nexus-rom-lmy49f-t3300714
Battery life seems really good as is overall performance of the tablet
If you root to install a different rom, do banking apps and banking websites still work?

I'm not sure as I don't use banking apps but you could use Magisk to mask the root:

https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk

It works with apps and games that check for root access.

how does this compare to the 2013 nexus 7?
Nexus 7 is much better.

yeah, i did some comparisons after i posted this yesterday, and it would seem the nexus 7 (2013) is still as good or if not better spec than the fire tab.

was looking for something that would be a bit of an upgrade for my gf's aging N7. won't bother with this one...
steviemcg1982
how does this compare to the fire kids tablet?

It's the same except the kids tablet has the cover with 16GB and a year of Fire for Kids. If you're on amazon prime it works out £13 cheaper to buy the 16GB standard version and a case for £64.98, then sign up to Fire for Kids unlimted at £1.99 per month with a month free trial. Total of £86.87 for the first year, but as above comment points out you don't get the same level of warranty.

Edited By: TheChopper on May 03, 2017 23:12
as far as I know it's identical to the fire kids tablet, except the kids tablet comes with a case and a replacement warranty for accidental damages for the first six months or a year I believe.
Managed to pick one up from Argos. Mine has 5.3.1.0 software version on it so I used Kingroot and flashed an AOSP Custom ROM called Fire Nexus rom (from XDA).

Not had much of a chance to test the ROM but it looks much better then the stock Amazon OS

Bear in mind plex is using dlna which supports only up to 1080p. Doesn't support 4k. If you want to stream 4k maybe the best option is to attach hdd or use direct network access.
Incorrect. Plex doesn't use DLNA. You can has optionally enable DLNA If you wish on Plex media server but it does not natively stream using DLNA.
Plex has supported 4k streaming for a long time........
So what has to be done to stream 4K?

Nothing..its natively supported. If you have 4K media in your Plex library and a Plex device that natively supports the audio/video codec in your 4k file it will play.
I stream 4K MKV's to a Samsung 4k TV via a PS4 Pro as the Plex client on my Samsung TV can be a little bit hit and miss with 4k MKV's.
PS4 Pro handles them fine.

You should expire this deal then if there are none left.
Not necessarily. Other stores may have stock.

It is store specific as it is yellow stickered in the picture. There is, according to the poster, no stock in that store.

Why is this cold? Looking for a cheap tablet for my son
£35 on amazon and John Lewis this week so cold

It WAS £35 on amazon and john lewis BUT it is not that price now.

If you have a time machine, I would recommend going back to the weekend or perhaps even the last black friday so that you can buy it cheaper.

If you do NOT have a time machine, then this is the best price currently.

Heat added for the best CURRENT price.

These are great. The worry free guarantee is excellent, as is the free kids content added. Highly recommended
i am looking to buy one, but am also considering the 8" HD version - reason being better performance slightly larger screen, and still manageable to hold.
apparently the 7" version is a similar or identical to the 7" Fire Tablet they sell for 35-40 on amazon.

In any case i think this is a good price for something that retails at 99£

I made this 2 weeks ago runs pretty sweet even without a SSD.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/rC98vV

You can get this chip for £49.25 from alza.co.uk it's £5 delivery but if you spend over £70 and sign up for the newsletter you get a £5 discount. I bought the b250m d2v mobo as well but seems they don't have that model at the minute have other b250m mobos though. Saves a bit more if you are buying more than just the cpu. It is based in Ukraine though so it would be a headache to return but seems OK for small purchases.

thanks op. can anyone please recommend a good motherboard for this ?
I bought this >Clicky< for £63.50 at the time and 16gb of the Ballistix DDR4 ram for £70.52 that was on offer a few weeks ago.
Put it all together and it runs sweet, impressive bios on the motherboard but then I have upgraded from an Asus motherboard from 9 years ago.
Runs iRacing, Dirt Rally at really good rates for me in 1080 x 1920 but my graphics card is letting it down as it's only a 1GB Asus 7790 but overall very impressed with the performance for such a low price cpu.
I plan on getting the exact same setup, I bought the G4560 and the same ram deal, also looking at the same motherboard . I'm hoping for a RX 480 deal under £150, maybe the price will drop when the vesa series comes out

Well that's a coincidence, I have been googling RX 480 cards this afternoon to replace the 7790.
Once that's installed then should see me good until the i5 processors come down in price.

Considering this card is a low budget option, I would go for the B250 series. Other more expensive options would be Z270 series (mainly for overclocking, which can't be done on this processor without downgrading motherboard bios) and H270 series

I rooted mine. On Google Search for "root fire 7 Google play and nova launcher". I had to allow unsigned software on my pc which was a pain, once I had set my pc to accept unsigned drivers I was ready to go. It works really well. I have mine setup as a display for cctv cameras. It kept closing tinycam pro app, and returning to home screen, so I installed "rom toolbox pro" from the play store, updated busybox when it asked me to, adjusted the kernel settings to increase cpu for many of the kernel functions and I had a stable tablet that has been running perfectly for days now. I also used the rom toolbox pro app to freeze all the Amazon apps so they dissapear from the home screen. Didn't want to delete them just incase.

Hi
the best case is the foam colourfull case with a handle. There are many in amazon and ebay. I was afraid of that would fit as they are advertised only for 5th gen but they are great and fit perfectly.
I sent two of these back and wouldn't get another, you get what you pay for and its a cheap price. Each had dead pixels on delivery and thats just an instant no thanks for me.
These are ret slow.

Got rid of mine almost immediately, even rooted and modded it was a bit crap.
I had absolutely no problems whatsoever installing the Play store on the latest Kindle Fire; no rooting required at all.

Just follow the steps at https://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/ and it works like a charm

Disappointed I didn't snap this up in time, looks like it has expired now.
I bought one last week and thought I'd add a few comments in response to some of the questions. This is for the kids and they have an ipad mini 2 already. I bought this as they eventually crack the ipad mini screens, so we thought at this price, we'd give it a shot to save some money on the continous replacements now that the ipad mini 2 isn't in the apple stores anymore and we're not splurging on the ipad mini 4 for the kids.
Firstly, yes you can get your tube, but it's a blue icon so may have some subtle differences. To be fair, I can't spot them and my kids can play all the things they can on the ipad mini. No, you cant add google play, well at least not without a workaround and I can't be bothered with the faff. That means some of the apps you might want can be a little difficult to get without a workaround.
They are a little slower than the ipad but as it's for the kids, they don't care. It does the job I bought it to do. I can't say much about the adverts as I paid the £10 to take them off. It's not an ipad but it's £35. Pretty pleased so far but time will tell on how good the battery is and most importantly, how robust the screen will be (I did buy a cover for it).
I managed to get one of these in the Black Friday sale for £29.99 for the 8gb and £39.99 for the 16gb. I would've paid more so this is still a great bargain! Excellent bit of kit. Worth paying the extra for more storage IMO.
PhilK
Got a Fire tablet from work (for use at work) NOT impressed. An iPad it isn't. Couldn't be further from an iPad's performance actually

But then an Ipads not exactly £35. Couldn't be be further from a £35 price actually . :p

Just dipping toes into the world of these trackers and can't see point of spending much more money when the functions work out the same.
Same as any kind of watch, isn't it? If you just want something reliable to tell the time, you can find it for £10. Doesn't mean there's no reason anyone would spend more.
Well actually I'm pretty sure the miband2 doesn't record SPO2 and elevation? Also the active pop battery life is 8 months

Unsure why the cold, this deal is from Amazon and is NOT the Argos deal.8)

Not voted but probably because the site is swamped with this item. The Argos deal was hot but the JL deal is hotter with 2 years warranty. The site should consider giving some ancillary heat to duplicate deals but listing them on the intro blurb of the original post. I can't navigate for Kindles at the moment and feel I should buy 5 :D

Got the 16Gb models for my two boys at Christmas. Good quality screen for the money, and keeps them suitably entertained at times. As they get older, the child profiles free up a bit more, but I can thankfully lock out the browser, youtube, etc., for the moment.

My trusted Kobo's battery life is rapidly deteriorating. Is this a worthy replacement? I can use Calibre to convert from ePub if necessary. Thanks.
Not in my opinion.
A Kobo (like a kindle) uses e-ink technology. You can read for hours and hours without getting sore eyes, and the battery lasts for a very long time (weeks?).
Admittedly (if the Kobo/Kindle is not backlit) you cannot read in the dark.
This is a tablet. It emits light. I find reading on tablets something possible, rather than pleasurable. And the battery will probably last one day.
On the other hand, on this you can put apps, games, which you cannot do on a K/K.

Really insightful, thank you. I'll give it a miss as I use my Kobo daily. Now to find a cheap Kobo deal (_;)
Well i got my tablet and it's got a dead pixel on the screen :(
