This doesn't have the perv at an Amazon assistant feature called May Day :(

"Why isn’t this available on the all-new Kindle Fire HD?
Kindle Fire HD doesn’t have a microphone or compatible hardware, which is required to use Mayday."
I said its not an e-ink reader. Which it isn't, so having a backlight or not is a red herring and the questioner is confused. It's a tablet, you can use any tablet as an e-reader, I've got Nook and Kindle apps on my Asus Android tablet.

Main issue with Kindle is being locked into Amazon and not having full access to Google Play etc.
It IS an e-reader too. It's a kindle so you just download any books you want. I have one. It's great but wish it was more compatible with other apps and flash player.

waterstones are really bad for delivery ordered a christmas present from them and they finally cancelled the order in March, Never had anything I have ordered on line from them.
Just a heads up thats all but a good price.

I haven't used them online yet, but you can ask for delivery to a store and pick it up from there. Maybe if they are dealing with the shops the service is actually better.
I've got a Waterstone's giftcard kicking about somewhere with a fair amount on it. Quite fancy the HDX 4G. Hmmmmmm....

you can't really compare apple and amazon, apple sell their products at a premium and over charge the customer, Amazon's approach is to sell at lower price and make money on the book/streaming etc side of things.

Credit goes to Amazon for me and the price of the 7" HDX is a steal seeing as you can put stock Android if you wish, root as it is to put google play store on or just sideload apps you want to use from android over to it.
erko247
ha, Apple don't need to do this to sell their tablets.
Apple is for people who have low self esteem, cant read specs and too much money to waste!
If it was pay day I'd buy one for my girl so heat for me
Can I plug it directly into my TV to stream movies and content ? Oh it doesn't have HDMI out. Ok how about add more ram for extra storage you know that one thing Android devices had over all Apple devices ? Oh no SD slot, erm ok.

Looks to be a dud to me, why not just buy a tablet that works and has features that don't tie you to the device ?

Yep, certainly does. Perfectly. Was very impressed for sub 15 quid.

I know that shops will price match. Just ask them at customer services they will take you to a computer and check online. I did that with my Sony TV. JL were selling it for £900 and I price matched it for £570.

Glasgows John Lewis store wont price match on the spot. Want you to buy it at full price then submit a claim for a price match that they might give you.

I'm glad i got the 2012 version.. the 2013 version for me and so for the experts this is a downgrade of the 2012 version!

yeah because a multi billion pound corporation is going to incrementally downgrade their products. Get real.

The Fire HD feels like a step backwards from the model it replaces: there's no camera, no HDMI output, half the storage and shorter battery life. It's faster, though, and has a slicker operating system. But you're still limited to Amazon's app store which lacks the choice you get with Google Play.

I was close to buying one a couple of weeks ago when they had the same offer. But the big problem with these are if you have bought apps on Play Store you will have to purchase them again through Amazon app store if you want them. So money is in pocket waiting for something without limitations.

If you root, you can install Play Store.

If its anything like the Fire HD used to be, it is pretty easy to side load apps you have purchased/pirated/obtained elsewhere.
my friend has bought two kindles in the last month and maintains he didn't get the refer a friend 10% code. Are they just given to random buyers or does everyone get a code who buys a kindle?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is only £30 more than this and you get a £30 voucher with it too.

This is a lot quicker and has a better display.

Much better display and its faster, 2.2 quad core versus 16 quad core. They are both plenty fast.

Seen some conflicting reports, does this have a front facing (any) camera for Skype calling?

Ta
these do, the new one's dont, just so they could make them cheaper.

older one:
cheaper
more memory
front camera
hdmi out

personally think its a much better deal than the new one even tho it has a faster processor.

good summary!
It's not easy to navigate the minefield that is Kindle Fire as there are too many generations, versions, revisions and models under the same name.

Not sure why last year's HD came in 16gb or 32gb but the new one is 8gb and 16gb only. Maybe they're pushing people towards the more expensive HDX.
HDMI support is a big thing to remove, and if I was ever tempted by the new one, this would be a deal-breaker. The front facing camera is probably a deal breaker for a lot of other people too. That's 3 huge points in favour of the cheaper, older tablet.

For a balance of price vs features, this definitely seems like the best Kindle Fire tablet.

From checking my local stores, it seems none are in stock anywhere.
Last week (when it was £100, came with a £10 voucher off a future shop), it seemed to be in stock everywhere.
They seem to be yoyo-ing with their prices on this product, it's been up and down more times than....... (insert crude reference). I'm sure it'll come back in stock at this price some time this year, just maybe not before Christmas!
Is this in stock anywhere? Can't find it....
this is the older version comparing with amazon website

What got me about this deal was that on the day I bought this, there were a couple of sellers who made a roaring trade on ebay selling these for £125. With ebay fees there wasn't much scope for turning a profit on these but it's amazing how little people shop around when it comes to ebay - why spend £100 minus £10 at an established retailer when you can spend £125 with a stranger??!

Was having buyer's remorse (mine is sitting here on the shelf unopened), but seeing the price go back up has helped convince me this was a great bargain.
Reserved this at two argos stores last night, turned up at both to find they were shut for refurbishment (yet it still let me reserve and waste my evening?!). Now today the deal is no longer on!!! serious f*** you Argos! not buying squat from you guys this year!

Venting over, this was an otherwise brilliant deal so good on you guys who managed to get one :-)
Thank you for your feedback, I now know I will get the £10 voucher when I collect tomorrow.
Although ewwaxo has put a mix into the equation after mentioning the Aldi Tablet Quad Core.
But no reviews are out yet, and the previous one from Medion not great.

This or a tab 3, only want it for a tablet as a present? Not bothered about e reader use

For me it would be this, I have bought this as a gift for my mum too, this should be faster than the Samsung IMO, plus they always get great reviews

Why has this been expired? The 8GB Kindle Fire HD is still £99 on Tesco Direct site. Yes, the 16GB version has gone back up in price, but that isn't the deal that's posted...

Contacted mods to unexpire

Yes I gathered that. Thanks for your astute observation

I've been looking to get a Kindle for my G'friend as she loves reading which is the main reason to get the kindle...

Is this where Kindle (for books) has an advantage over other tablets? or can you get a kindle app for other tablets so you an still get all the same books for download purchase?

I appreciate that some may have better features but if priority is for reading should I get this (or perhaps just the cheaper Kindle Wi-Fi or paperwhite)?

I guess other features might be useful but not priority

If reading is the priority then the e-reader kindles would be your best bet. You can get a Kindle App on the Apple AppStore & Google Marketplace which allows you to access Kindle books from other tablets/smartphones.

This deal is Cold, ( 486 degress )This isnt a deal for the Kindle fire HDX, You can get a Hook HD 7 inch for £79 which has better spec and Display and can be easily rooted to get a full andriod experience. I got my Nook for £49 of ISME with the £30 of £60 spend for signing up with a Credit account which I paid off straight away.
This isn't a deal for the HDX, you're correct. I never said it was?!?! It's a deal for the new version HD.How is it a cold deal? It's £20 off Amazon's price for the same product. Please don't turn the thread into Kindle bashing one. Just because you don't like a Kindle, doesn't mean others feel the same. Having your own opinion is fine, however many people do like the Kindles & therefore see this as the good price it is.
Got nothing to do with a kindle bash,Never had a Kindle m8, I am making aware to people that there is better alternatives out there for cheaper with better specs thats why in my eyes its a Cold deal. Dont take it to heart that people dont agree with you!
Nothing taken to heart, don't worry. ;)There are obviously many alternatives out there, this is currently the best deal available for this particular tablet though. Yes, the display on the Nook HD is slightly better (higher resolution & 30 or so more ppi). However, in terms of specs, the new Kindle Fire has a more powerful processor & the same RAM as the Nook HD. For those that don't want or like the Amazon ecosphere, then I'm fairly certain the various Android forums will come up with a rooting solution for the new line of Fires soon enough.

Totally Agree, (Nook has a 1.5 Dual Core CPU Also).

As I can see with the heat that alot of people think its a good deal!

Fellow Amex cardholders, I NEED HELP PLEASE; just tried to pay for something with American Express online with Curry's and ended up (as always seems to be the case with Amex) almost snapping the card in half with frustration.

1-On the website's own payment screen after checkout; Entered the usual long number, entered name of account number, then asked for a verification number which I believe is the four digit number on the front of the card just above the long embossed number (rather than the 3 digit number you'd get on the back of a debit card)

2- Taken to Amex's own 'verified by' page and asked again for the 4 digit verification number off the front of the card THEN a 'pass number' which it tells me "this is the number you have already set up"....WTF??? I've never set up a number with them.

I tried my PIN that didnt work. The screen progresses and asks me to set an 8 character password, which I did and then I return to the checkout screen to be told payment failed! I went through again and tried my online account 4 digit number; didnt work either, same failure to checkout.

Christ I hate Amex how can I get past this and buy things online with this damn card?

I ask for assistance as I'm assuming that Amazon takes you through exactly the same payment screens. It just impossible to use there is no mention of any pass numbers in any emails or documentation I have recieved from them. Such a shoddy service!

Quite clearly it states on the website "Kindle Sale - save up to £60 on older models" but no issues here. I am an ipad owner but Fire model is steal at £89 & so is the Paperwhite (I have the older model & it's excellent) IF you can get hold of one.
I personally don't like the sneaky advertising screensaver which you cannot delete but you are saving on the full price. In the US they make it quite clear that the ads are present or you can pay extra for an ad-free version.
Either way it should be made clear what you're getting at the point of sale otherwise there should be an option to delete it.
In any case this is a scorching deal.

It's not advertising as such. More branding. Advert would be had it been detailing a specific offer, product or website which it doesn't. Also the information in the stores does mention the Waterstones screensaver, sorry if you missed it.
Went into Waterstones the other day to buy a 16gb Kindle Fire HD at £119 and the nice lady said we only have the 32gb version left but she said "hang on. I think....yes as I thought." She scanned the 32gb HD and it came up as £119. Bought straight away. Worth checking to see if this is nationwide.

these are going cheap because the newer HDX has just come out. I'd always get the latest model for a few extra quid more personally, but each to their own.

Few quid...All-New Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" 32 Gb Tablet from £369.. pft

Well exactly - just shows how behind the old models are, not like with iphones where there's hardly any difference between 5 and 5s.

Not being argumentative for the sake of it, but there really is a significant difference between the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s ... But that's a different discussion. I felt that you belittled the price differential between the old and the new Kindle models. I wouldn't call £170 a 'few quid', but then I am relatively frugal when it comes to money. I only have one tablet, one phone and one e-reader.

Peace

I'd say kindles are pretty much pointless... why would you buy a tablet that dictates you only purchase content from them? but that's just my opinion, each to their own.
