helpful because i have exams right now thanks for sharing!
The only downside is the lack of WP support.

Not an issue for me as I use it fine on the Nook HD, learning German. My class techer highly recommend us to use it, especially if you like points and achievement (i.e. competative).

I also use it on my desktop, earns more points and allows for more spelling practice. Definitely worth the heat for a free to use program to learn languages!
I am using it to learn Italian and can't understand why people are voting cold. I think its a brilliant app

Been posted before at least twice (HERE & HERE) but it's a great app - especially for free.

Ahh, I did a search it came up blank :| Well, worth a repost anyway, can't praise this site enough.

It's interesting. It doesn't teach you any rules of the language, instead teaching you phrases in context through repetition. I think this app in combination with a more structured method to learn the fundamental rules of the language is a great way to learn.

Case in point, I'm using Duolingo to study Italian. I'm finding learning verb conjugations very difficult by just being told them in context, so I'm using a verbs crib-sheet I found online at the same time.

EDIT: It should be pointed out that it's free because essentially, after a certain point, they're using people as a means of crowd-source translation of scanned text which can't be machine translated. I'm still not sure how I feel about this, but I'm still learning the basics so it's hardly of note right now.

The exercises aren't part of the crowd-source translation; that hasn't been incorporated into the phone apps yet. On the website, you'll see a specific section where various websites and blogs have been posted and are up for people to translate. No compulsion in doing that (yet) though, but I don't see any harm in it and it could be good to further develop your abilities.

When I ran Vista, language packs were paid for extras unless you had the Ultimate edition and cost over £24 a language. Has MS made these free since?

Language packs are legally available to download to anybody from Microsoft server.
Vistalizitor is just 3rd Party software to let you install it on any edition.

FROM NOTES on the website
It is possible to run a MUI language pack on editions other than Ultimate or Enterprise, but the system refuses to install it and does nothing at all.
To override this limitation to one MUI language, Vistalizator was created.
If Windows is installed using a multi-language Windows installation DVD, one can choose which language to use at installation startup (once selected there is no option to change it later).
In fact all languages from the DVD are installed, but they are not accessible: Vistalizator detects these languages and can switch between them. Furthermore, Windows tries to remove all languages except the installed one, soon after system installation (through Task Scheduler): Vistalizator blocks this behaviour at first startup.

What roame said. I tried the Japanese one out a while ago and it had errors in the words & was ridiculously strict on writing EXACTLY what they had put e.g. you got answers wrong for capitalising a word when they hadn't, or not putting a full stop.
mange tout Rodney, mange tout. Bonjour!
Belle trouvaille, la chaleur ajoutée
It's free but they will try to "upgrade" you to the deluxe version. However for me that was not the problem with BYKI, it was the incredible amount of errors in the program, felt like it had been put together by someone using Google translate. My language tutor was in stitches when she used it. oO

Good luck to @millarcat's daughter..

Thanks, ordered the Italian one :-D
These look great, ordered along with Snappy and the Puzzle Book Collection. Thanks OP.
Fantastic :D Thanks. I have a son who is mad on foreign languages, he'll love these as reward books.
This is an excellent resource to support any young child learning a language. I have ordered for my little girl.

To enter the debate about learning languages. i think the way languages are taught in school is far too limited anyway. It is good that they have introduced languages into the primary school curriculum, but i think they 'skirt' around the language concentrating on the basics for far too long. I did French A Level and that was the first time i saw a proper French novel. I think children should be immersed more in the culture of the country of the language they are learning and exposed to more resources such as novels, periodicals, media.etc. The teaching seems to centre around the whole holiday mentality, which is why i think British pupils quickly lose interest. How many exciting french lessons can any of you recall?
ds is 14, are these books to young for him????

A nice looking app but the reviews don’t suggest that I should put too much confidence in it. I know these things are for occasional use with common phrases, but it never ceases to amaze me how some people use these as their actual interpreter!

It seems a no-brainer to me that when it comes down to it, you need to find a good company with EXPERIENCE in interpreting services. Technological advancements have been great, but I still like to have an actual person standing next to me!

1,976 Bought so far, so odd HUKD punters feel it's such a very cold deal.

As MassiveBongFace says "When a new version comes out the old discs don't spontaneously combust do they?"

Personally, I have no need on V4 connecting me to native speakers, I'd rather learn on my own first, until I felt fluent.
Good spot. I won't vote cold, but only of interest if you want to learn: French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese or Mandarin Chinese.

Not great for me, as I want Portuguese. Shame.
Download and save yourself a fortune :). Maybe immoral and 'wrong' but she's loaded anyway. So she gets a silver tap instead of a gold one, big deal!
Im sure the language has not changed that much between version 3 and 4?

When a new version comes out the old discs don't spontaneously combust do they?
£108 in total using this route or £139 with the money back guarantee from Rosseta. I now don't know what to do ! Just fed up going to Tenerife every year and not being able to speak a little spanish.

Its not FREE, we pay for the licence once a year..........COLD from me Sowee!

You have to pay the fee whatever happens, while you have a TV capable of receiving the broadcast, by law, says the Government.

So this is free as they charge you nothing else extra.

Marginal utility and all that.

Whether or not the Government gives all, some or none of the licensing fee is not any fault of the BBC.

If the BBC vanished tomorrow, the UK governent would still fleece us for the right to receive a TV broadcast.

If you voted cold just for the reason you think the TV licensing fee is too much (don't we all?) then that is contravening the terms of this site in my opinion, so I hope a mod can cancel your unhelpful vote.

Genuinely a good course, I'm up to lesson 4 with Kenard and his chums, and have got some conversational Welsh. And if you're a Gavin and Stacey fan, 'Rydw i yn Hoffi Coffi'
Say what you see. It's good but it's not right.

Isnt Welsh just a load of drunk English guys living in the west of England ?

:-D :-D :-D
Thanks, this is very useful for me.
I may now get to understand what my children talk about when they dont want me to know!!!
Great find, many thanks - Diolch
Lovely! I keep on buying Welsh language textbooks but it is certainly better to listen to the sounds rather than just guessing them from Huw Edwards phonetics on telly!
