Nor did I - but strange that if you go for the speedy delivery you do get charged.... very odd

Amazon's cheapest shipping option is liable for import VAT and the Royal Mail Handling Fee, the faster options pay the import VAT in advance as a deposit to Amazon (you're refunded if the item doesn't get stopped). If you pay the VAT deposit and get a bill from the Post Office asking for the VAT and Handling Fee, something's amiss. Tell Amazon and they'll refund the charges (even though it isn't always their mistake). If you choose the cheapest shipping option, there's a chance you're item won't be inspected but if it is, you'll pay 20% of the items total value (shipping and postage) plus £8 to the Royal Mail,

Moto G better value and will have Lollipop shortly.

Depends on what you want. This combines the improved cameras of the new Moto G with the 4G capability of the old. The only sacrifice you make (hardware-wise) is the screen resolution. It isn't clear yet whether the G2 mini will get Lollipop or not and that is something that LG need to get better on. The custom ROM scene isn't big enough to rely on and I don't know if I would want to use one anyway, if it makes me lose the IR blaster and any aptX support which may or may not be there (it's so hard to find out).

Anyway. The Moto G (whichever version) is not better value. It just makes different compromises. Compromises that will be a better fit for a lot of people (just not you), but perhaps for me.

Edited By: PurplePerson on Oct 16, 2014 12:53
You can get from Amazon.es for £140ish (depending on conversion rate)
Moto G better value and will have Lollipop shortly.
mini versions are rubbish by LG/Samsung/HTC

only Sony make a proper good spec mini version
28081947
The LG G2 Mini 4G version is available from Amazon for £162.22 which is only £2.27 more

This is also the 4G version (even though it's not mentioned in the description). I don't think there *is* a non-4G UK version.

I was wondering if this was better than the Samsung Galaxy S3? Anyone any experience of both?
For reasons I won't go into, I ended up with a Moto G and one of these and got to play with them both side by side for a weekend.

First off the Moto G screen resolution is really impressive - if you watch movies or play a lot of games on your phone I think this has to be a factor. The LG screen is noticeably lower res - after all it IS lower resolution, and on a slightly larger screen. I thought this fact alone would be enough to persuade me the Moto G was the one to get. It really is a lovely screen on such a cheap phone.

However after that all points for me went to the LG. For a start the LG feels a much better quality phone - the design, the weight, the finishing - it all feels and looks much higher quality. The Moto G for me felt much cheaper and more plasticky. It wasn't horrible but nothing it stood out from a million other generic handsets.

Second off the camera is much better on the LG. It's actually capable of taking some really nice shots. The Moto G camera is dreadful. It's worse than my old S3 Mini camera which was in itself worse than the Xperia Ray I had before that - all cheap enough phones so we're talking a really deadbeat camera. That's an issue for me as I do use the camera a fair bit.

In terms of performance I think the Moto G was crisper but the LG was not especially laggy. There were one or two occasions where you would exit an app and rendering the home screen again would take maybe a second or so. But when using the apps themselves I saw no difference to speak of. On the flip side the Moto G uses stock kit kat and I find that UI pretty basic compared to the LG UI which (for me, it's personal of course) has a lot of really nice touches.

As I can't get 4G and I'm not willing to pay an extra fiver a month for the odd occasion I'm in a 4G area, the 4G aspect doesn't really bother me but it's a nice-to-have for whenever the coverage improves. Overall, if I were comparing Moto G 4G to LG I would go for the LG but if you took the camera out of the equation I would go for the Moto G.
Of course, if you don't feel those issues would bother you, then it's probably a good phone for you.

For myself, the weak camera wouldn't be of much concern, as I barely ever take any photos anyway. I'd be most bothered by the sluggishness in multi-tasking, showing the keyboard and rendering complex web pages that the review refers to (sounds much like my Ascend G300), followed by the Wi-Fi dropping the connection and then the slow charger. I'd be nervous about using any old charger to speed it up, as I'd think that LG had designed it that way for a reason but it'd probably be OK.

It's really hard to find out exact specs on phones, which is really annoying. Some comparison sites seem to say that this doesn't have a gyroscope or Glonass, whereas the Moto G 4G has the latter but I'm not sure about the gyroscope. Some people might not care about the missing gyroscope but it can be useful for some apps and it'd be quite annoying to buy a phone expecting that they all have this basic feature (must cost pennies to include it), only to find that it doesn't.
doveman007
This is tempting, with great battery life, good camera, 4G and 1GB RAM, for a great price.

However it does have some issues that I fear might annoy me, such as lack of ambient sensor/auto brightness. £160 is still a large chunk of change for me and I think I'd rather wait for something better to come along (or spend a bit more), rather than spend £160 on something that seems likely to irritate me on a daily basis.

"Look a little closer and a few issues do crop up. Showing the keyboard for the first time is slow and multi-tasking can be sluggish to respond. Rendering complex web pages can be an exercise in patience.
None of the performance problems are different to the G2 Mini's competition, but the simpler software Motorola provide on the Moto G help to give it more of a cutting edge."

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/lg-g2-mini-1226995/review/4#articleContent

"The strangely low output charger LG supplies in the box exacerbates this and charge times were tediously slow. Using a higher output charger I had resulted in much improved charge times."

"Wi-Fi performance is not as impressive, as the G2 Mini seems to drop the signal earlier than any other phone I have tried recently. Though once connected speeds are fine."

"Watching videos on the device is a little frustrating as the screen is too low resolution to natively play back HD content. The external speaker, while loud enough, is not particularly good either.
The G2 Mini can handle most casual games you would throw at it, but anything demanding high-end performance with high quality 3D graphics is beyond it."

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/lg-g2-mini-1226995/review/5#articleContent
"One of the consequences of the relatively meagre hardware in the G2 Mini is that the camera is not the fastest to capture. It never seems ready to go when you are and shot to shot times are only average. In low light, it is slow to respond which can be very frustrating."
I have just read the review and still belive this is a good deal, as this is HotUKDeals after all. The quality of the display is a negative, but still will not affect most people, unless watching movies. The ambient-light sensor is a niggle, but this review is when the phone was over £200. It is now £160, and the battery life alone may buy my vote.

Haha, I'm adding on the MX-4 thermal paste myself. I have some lying around and from the videos, it does not look hard at all to get to the heatsink. Also, if you do select MX-4 upgrade on PCS, they only upgrade the thermal paste on the CPU but not the GPU! So you might as well do it yourself anyway.

I tried getting them to remove the hard drive but they don't do it anymore. They say they need it for testing before it being shipped :(. I already have bought separately an 250GB SSD Evo and will buy another 4GB Ram stick in Black friday sales soon so I'll have 8GB dual channel RAM (2x4GB sticks) :)

Sounds good mate! My laptop is in building stage now. Still worried about the Lid whilst having it in a backpack, as when I'm travelling on the plane or just walking around Uni on the way to the coffeeshop. May I ask which cushion case you got?

And apart from that you've had no other problems with it whatsoever? Screen LED backlight bleed? Dead pixel (not sure whether to get dead pixel guarantee, I opted for the QHD+ Screen)? Are the fans quiet for browsing, word, pdf, some chrome tabs open in a coffeeshop?

Thanks for taking the time to reply and the tips! :)

Oh i see, good choice, I asked them through chat and through the phone whether they put the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu, and they told me they did! I either heard a fib from them or it might be true, (I dunno, I hope they pasted on both the cpu and gpu!..)

I actually take back the sound i heard from the lifting the lid, I was sort of holding it right near the centre where the camera is when I was lifting the lid and only then did it kind of make a slight creek, though its really not a problem, but I was also gribbing it slightly harder than usual as well, so i completely take back the issue with the lid, for it, it honestly poses no problems.

Oh right? ahh that sucks, well, you can just put it into an external case and use it for extra storage I guess :)

the case I got was direct from amazon when they used to stock it, and its more like a laptop bag as opposed to those neoprene cases, anyways, its here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005E0DKN0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
I purchased it when i bought the laptop a couple of months ago for £10.48, i would recommend this bag because the brand and the light weight feel and the overall quality of it, it also has metal clips on the side (it took me forever to find a case with it and for such a low price), which should make it sturdier than plastic ones if you were to use the strap with it.

No backlight bleed, and no dead pixels (i took the risk and didn't purchase it, and if I had a dead pixel, I would have returned it with some excuse one way or another, I feel like I shouldn't need to pay extra for the screen that they give me since it is part of the laptop anyways), I stayed with the 1080p ips screen, and it's definitely the best screen I have used on a laptop. I didn't opt for the QHD+ even though the special deal was on at the time purely because (IIRC, correct me if im wrong) it's glossy, for compatibility reasons, and that the 1080p screen is amazing as it is, (and I agree..)

Fans are quiet, pretty much non-existent when doing browsing or word or even using computing programmes, but when opening all my saved tabs at the same time(have about 20 constantly), the fans would go on for a about 30 secs at most just to get it all loaded up, it's literally only ever on when it needs to be, and I have to say the cpu is powerful, no complaints whatsoever, loads everything in seconds, and with ssd, from cold start, it boots in 9 seconds, (with your evo ssd, it'll be even faster)

Oh one more question if you don't mind. Has your laptop shown any signs of wear? Like the laptop on the right in the beginning of this video (the palmrest and touchpad) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EQqnjA-G5k
You can see the painting coat wearing off and apparently the touchpad becomes smoother and shinier.

I told PCS to not put any stickers on it (eg. the HDMI, nvidia, i7 stickers, etc) as I prefer a cleaner looking laptop. But I hope the palm rest paint coatings won't wear out. Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply, i didn't get a notification about this message, that's not happened to mine, but really wouldn't be surprised if it did, its like that with probably most laptops thats coated with paint, only ones that wouldnt is the aluminium lappys. Although I can't really say much atm, since its literally constantly plugged into an external monitor with a wireless keyboard/mouse, but yeah, over time, it would definitely wear out, it happened to my brother's Acer laptop, he's used it for about 2/3 years. I probably wouldn't worry about it, and if you did, just make sure it doesn't touch your skin, or something, cause i think its the oils from our skin that causes it to rub off etc.
Keep me updated with your laptop! would love to know some tips or tricks i don't already know :)

Thanks, I will do! Still waiting on my laptop though. 7th working day now and it just changed to Testing! Woud most likely get it on Friday hopefully. I hope there won't be any problems with it that I don't end up having to RMA it.

I very much doubt the laptop will last 8 years. In such a small enclosure the gpu is likely to need a replacement sooner than that or any of the USB or other connectors in the motherboard are likely to fail after a few years. The chassis offers value for money, you can't have good quality and cheap price with a laptop there is a compromise and the proof of that is the trackpad, keyboard (as you mentioned) and the speakers (with or without the software installed). Good value for money laptop but not something that will last 8 years

It might not last 8 years say, but obviously as long as we can maintain it, I actually find the keyboard to be really nice to type with, its the trackpad thats not the greatest, and the speakers are fine with the software. I have it placed on an laptop cooler whenever the GPU is used, will this help? (genuine question)

Great. Price if you don't get the tax and remember it's region 1 too
Tempted but tax scares me
Gave you heat because it's an awesome collectors edition, but the film is utterly terrible.. Saw an advance screening yesterday, and wow, just wow. It's almost like Michael Bay was making a parody of himself..

Just flew on Ryanair using this bag last Saturday. The frame Ryanair use to measure bags is slightly larger than the allowed dimensions and this case slid in to the frame with room to spare. Good purchase.
Great value, one ordered, heat added.
Just don't fly with Ryanair and it's not a problem.
NikLP
"Stuffing" luggage into the Ryanair pre-flight size checker is not going to wash any more at some places. If it doesn't go right in, you get charged. You have been warned!

Which is exactly why the price has been lowered!
