The Types of Whisky and Their Distinctive Features

• Scotch Whisky

  Considered to be the most pure and often highest value whiskies are the Scottish single malts. These have the oldest traditions and are made with barley, sometimes incorporating peat into the mixture depending on the region of Scotland they are being distilled in.

• Blended Whisky

  Made in the same manner as the Scottish single malt, Blended scotch generally involves whisky from a few different distilleries in order to gain a richer more diverse flavour than the single malt varieties.

• Irish Whiskey

  Make from barley that generally possesses a lighter taste and a smoother finish when compared to its Scottish cousin, Irish whiskey is notably different due to the fact that it is always distilled at least three times instead of the two that is common with Scottish whisky.

• Bourbon

  Bourbon is a classic American style of whiskey that is made with a minimum of 51% corn as opposed to barley. Due to the higher sugar content when compared to barley the corn impresses as sweeter flavour on the alcohol.

• Rye

  This type is made the same way, and in the same region as the American Bourbon with one distinct difference, having a majority rye content. Rye is a more wild version of American wheat and as a result, will have a sharper more sour flavour when compared to a traditional bourbon while still being sweeter overall when compared to Scottish or Irish whiskies.

• Japanese Whiskey

  Japanese whiskey is made in the same traditional styles as whiskies from Scotland, they are becoming more and more popular around the world as the quality of the product continues to increase. They are traditionally available as single malt or blended products.
