Well I thought I would add this here as its the last CDWOW deal - Looks like they owe the BFI £41 million quid - maybe buy with caution from now on ;)

Its going to appeal again so CDWOW live to fight another day .

I'm suprised UK law applies to Hong Kong companies , I hope CDWOW win eventually but it seems doomed as far as cheap CD's to the UK are concerned .

Another RIP-OFF Britain victory

hmmm, I emailed them and cancelled an order i placed with them on the weekend when I heard this on the news this morning. I would certainly deal with caution...

I wanted C&C3 Tiberium wars but I was half put off by noises of it being the Asian version they were suplying, which really isn't right. Doesn't matter if it's exactly the same but surely the manuals are different? and it's not advertised

I was most put off by the fact that the ordering system wasn't working on the weekend and it still isn't the last time I checked.
I placed the order and was greeted by an email saying there was a system problem and they were unable to confirm my order, and didn't receive a confirmation today either, although they did reply to my email cancelling the order within 30minutes at about 2pm.
I had awful visions of them taking the money and the order dragging on for ages until they never fulfilled it and were closed down :?
Think I am just going to pay the extra couple of pounds and get it in the UK.

Well as their bank accounts and assets have been frozen I thought it was worth posting ;)

#9
Their "Order History" section on the website hasn't worked for WEEKS now. I emailed them about it 10 days ago and they said they were "looking into it", but it's still not fixed.

Well the fine was twice their 2005 Turnover let alone their profits - its a pity but doent look good - either way they will be back up in no time as a different company

Surely its always been up to the customer to pay import duty? but yet CDwow seem to be getting the flak for importing goods into the UK :-(

Price fixing lives on with government backing :x

It's not about import duty as CDs are generally below the tax free threshold anyway (£18 ) so there's no tax/duty required on them which is how CD-Wow make money. They buy cheap overseas, ship overseas and the buyers here pay no taxes. The issue CD-Wow have been stuck with is unfair competition, the judge ruled that being able to buy CDs in bulk on foreign land and ship from foreign land was an unfair competition to UK Retailers (Despite the fact it's the BPI who prosecuted). The judge also had an issue with how CD-Wow were dealing with the case, i think he felt they thought they were above the law and dealt wih the case in that manner which went badly for them in the ruling.

I can't see the appeal working to be honest. I'd be very dubious about dealing with them until the matters settled. Has too many similarities to DVD Soon (Anyone remember them) with customer service reps not knowing about the court case and saying that the delays are due to "Warehouse Issues". If it was me i'd cancel any outstanding orders/preorders until the issue is settled as if your not buying on CC there's a chance you may lose your money. All Assets/Bank Accounts for CD-Wow have been seized since although they ship from Hong Kong and have an office there they are a british company and registered here...

Be careful!

I've e-mailed them to cancel an order that I've been waiting for over 2 weeks for (not even dispatched yet ).

Iv'e noticed today that they have removed quite a few cds - some ben folds, ben kweller & barenaked ladies that they used to have. It's a shame, with the vouchers, links & quidco there was no beating them!

And as if my worst fears are be played out right in front of me .... Guess what, check my credit card statement today and look there is a charge from CD wow  now lets just hope it is followed by a refund ....
Is my credit card though so hopefully there won't be a problem ringing up natwest and asking them to get the money back before the end of the month when CD wow get their gruby paws on it :p
#17
they always take the money when you order, stop scaremongering.
#18
Really? I have never cancelled an order fom CD wow before. Alot of companies don't charge until dispatch, plus this was charged after I cancelled the order which is what irritates slightly ...
#19
Even if you pre-order something 2 months in advance, CD-Wow still take the money immediately, they always have done.

Sounds like another case of the BPI maintaining its monopoly if you ask me.

I've dealt with CD-Wow for YEARS now, and only once have I had a problem which was resolved within a week.
They are an excellent compnay offering people what they want.

Surely if they are importing bulk quantities of 'foreign' CDs and DVDs and selling them cheaper, that just shows up how inflated our prices are.

You've opnly got to look at US DVD/CD sites to see how much we're being ripped off (£15-20 for a new release DVD, as oppossed to $15-20 over there...)

If they're being down for tax evasion, then maybe that's a fair point, but as this case has been brought by the BPI, I suspect that isn't really the issue.

They charge it stright away but it takes a few days to show on your card.

The issue was the BPI trying to stop CD-Wow from getting their CDs from anywhere other than the UK. It's total greed on the part of the BPI. They're aiming for a "level playing field" with regards to CD prices, where everyone charges a standard price (no doubt a high enough one to ensure they get the cut they want).

CD-Wow, however, didn't handle things very well. They ignored warnings, and previous rulings, and saying that "a few stray discs" from other countries had reached the UK is bullpoo.
#25
They just processed a full refund and gave me a new £1 voucher - score.
#26
So if you got a refund then I'm guessing that they still have access to their bank accounts etc, so maybe not everything has been frozen?
#27
Nothing has been frozen else they wouldn't keep taking orders they aren't like that.
#28
CD-Wow have announced they will fight the judgement in the European court so that will drag it out for a few more years.
#29
Just reading the artical on the BBC stated: "It said it had already obtained a freezing order against CD-Wow, meaning that all of its assets and bank accounts are frozen."
#30
Well maybe as payments go through a third party, it doesn't affect them? CD-Wow don't take the payments directly into their own bank accounts.
#31
Well everything goes through World Pay so I would guess they will have many bank accounts etc.

My refund e-mail:

Hi

Thank you for contacting us.

I have now cancelled the item as requested and processed a full refund.

Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. I hope you will consider visiting our site again.

Kind Regards

James

#35
I always get invoices from World Pay with my orders? Anyway lol :whistling:
#36
On that note, do people ever actually get email confirmations on orders? I get NOTHING - no order confirmation, no despatch emails, no payment receipts... All I ever got with WorldPay was a receipt from them, but nothing from CD-Wow. I always have to cut n paste the order number from the site and paste it into a Word document log I keep! :?

And it's not going to my junk folders either, before anyone asks. I don't have spam filters on, I get every piece of crap thrown at me. :-D

The boxset I ordered last week is still 'pending dispatch/despatch'. And yes, their 'my orders' function hasn't been working for an absolute age!!!

Hope I get em both :? :? :?

lmao - yeah, we often get the dispatch emails after the dvd has already arrived. :giggle:
#39
Exactly the same email I got Angel, puts me off rather not having anyway of referencing the order ... surely they still have an order reference system otherwise they would not be able to keep track of all the orders.

Probably just bad timing on a software upgrade which they thought would be good to do over the bank holiday or something ... but silly decision to start sending those emails in my opinion, they should have run the old system side by side.

AHA!

To find out your order status go here: http://www4.cd-wow.com/myorders.php

Enter the order number and your email address in the NON-MEMBERS bit, click Go, and this will tell you what's going on.

If you haven't got an order number you're screwed of course. :-D
