Damnit I was just about to post this :p

The original email says: "Feel free to forward this email to friends and family members--they can get £3 to spend on MP3s too!"

So yeah, it's not a specific code which is great news for everyone expecting an MP3 player for crimbo.
Of course the MP3's work with iPods and the Amazon downloader can also insert your newly purchased tracks straight into the iTunes library too so you don't have to worry about forgetting to import them too.

Also another note on quality. Most of them seem to be 256kbps VBR mp3's rather than a constant bitrate however due to the lack of DRM the quality can be forgiven and is good enough for 90% of people or for in the car anyway :)

Offer T&Cs:
Prices exclude postage and packaging. Offers available for a limited time only and subject to availability. Products may change from time to time. Prices and information correct at time of sending and subject to change without notice.
Each featured offer applies to a selected group of products. Click on the relevant offer for applicable products and relevant terms and conditions.

This offer is valid only on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (25-26 December 2008) for purchases from Amazon MP3, and can be used only once per customer. Terms and conditions apply - see Web site for details.

You make it sound as if CBR is better. VBR is in fact superior as it takes the lows and gives them a low bitrate, and the highs and gives them an average bitrate, resulting in smaller filesize and practically identical quality.

Exactly. For almost all people that would tolerate listening to MP3s in the first place, VBR is better because the algorithm decides for itself how much information to use for each interval of sound. In face CBR 320 would probably not sound noticeably better in most cases but it does consume a lot more bandwidth and space. The only reason you would want constant bit rate is if you were streaming over the internet like at SHOUTCast, in which case you would also need to pay royalties, etc to stay legal.

Great deal btw...

Not worth it if they aren't going to pay for postage, those MP3s will cost me a fortune to ship...

Well, that's the first time I've 'paid' for digital media. I suppose free is in my price range for electrons.
