Great discount! But after weighing things up I still went for the Nikon D90 12mp (£749 + £60 cashback). Canon are trying to squeeze too much onto an already overloaded sensor. The best thing folk seem to have to say about the 550D is that you can limit the uppermost ISO when shooting in the Auto mode so you don't accidentlly get a super-grainy image shot at ISO6400. The D90 also has a superior metering system.

So for my money I'd buy a D90. If you're upgrading from a lower spec Canon then you may prefer to stick with the same system. Just remember more megapixels doesn't make a better image.

I take it this doesn't apply to all purchases from play? Just this camera?

Couldn't agree more although - in defence of the Canon - one thing that it does do far better than the Nikon is high definition video. This is one area where, unfortunately, Nikon's are sadly lacking (and yes, I speak from experience - I own a Nikon D300s)
