this was sent by Midland Mainline and obviously not everyone is on a Midland line.

I tried booking Manchester-London and the MM site cleverly included a transfer from Mcr-Sheffield then onto London... still for £6.

I have also just received this from thetrainline.com:-

"You may have seen in the press this week, various stories about the recent increases in train fares by most of the Train Operating Companies across the UK.

While it is true that some of the fares have now gone up, many of the operators are now also making even more cheap tickets available. These tickets generally need to be purchased in advance and are subject to availability, so you are stongly advised to book as early as possible to get the best prices. All of these fares can be found and booked with TheTrainline.

Here are a few of the great value fares we have found:

London to Manchester - Single from just £12.50

Newcastle to London - Singles from just £10.00

Bristol to Edinburgh - Single from just £18.00

Birmingham to Newcastle - Single from just £12.00

Sheffield to London - Singles from just £6.00

Remember all the fares are available* and they are easy to find on TheTrainline, but here are some extra top tips to help you with your travel planning in 2006"

Well that maybe one of the funnier things I've read today. TheTrainline has to be one of the worst travel sites I've ever used, it's slow, it's buggy and it's unpredictable. Finding a cheap train fare on there can take an hour and a clever mind about half the time. I use this a lot and have picked up all sorts of bugs on it, like if you hit "Later trains" the price can jump, change, or even disappear on the leg that remains the same. I can't believe that this system is shared across the MML, Virgin, GNER etc. sites and still remains so useless. And this may seem unbelievable considering it's shared but sometimes you will actually get different prices on the different sites....bizarre. Easy it's not.

It's not problems per se, it's just they seem to have made the site frustratingly difficult to use. It's very easy to use if you believe what they are showing you is true... but often there are lower fares available if you play with it enough.

maybe I've been lucky...knew what I wanted and knew the price I should pay - I only ever use the low price special offers.

one little trick I did find was that if it didnt give u the best price say Manchester-London...then put an originating nearby town that u know will have to go thru Manchester anyway(Say Bolton) and you could usually get the low price.

I have also heard that they sometimes still have the low prices actually at the station when n/a on the web. Think it was covered in the local price.

all the best!
