Thanks for posting the deal, interesting, but just to let everyone know:

EA's Standard Policy is to provide you with the Digital Download for just one year unless you Purchase the Extended Download Service (seems to be free at the moment though!) which gives 5 years.

Why they can't just let you have the game to be downloaded forever, I don't know. What's the chance of you downloading a 5 year old game? Pretty slim, especially if it's not very good (I'll not go there ;-) - so what's the harm of saying 'Unlimited Downloads'? I mean, it's not as if they store a copy just for you, so it's no hardship for them surely.

It's just a gripe that I always have with the EA Store, unlimited downloads ala steam is a good thing - I mean, I do still play games that are ancient sometimes, and it's good to have it and not have to buy it again.

this is hot, why people vote cold i dont know, its easy to burn a copy of the downloaded game and store it, no reason for cold. you can pre-order fifa10 for 20.99 here with the above code etc.

Have they changed their method of burning the game to DVD's then? Just a few months ago it was incredibly difficult to do that. Basically the EA store has got bad press, and though they have been trying to redress the issue, they still haven't clearly stated the improvements that they have made - so we don't know until we try it again.

Thanks for letting me know, though, I'll have another look into backing up your downloads - my thoughts on their '1 year or 5 year' policy still hold though, it's silly. It should be 1 year or forever, or simply just allow us to have unlimited downloads forever which is an awful lot better.

I love digital distribution, it's eco-friendly, it's cheaper and there are many advantages; but it has to be done right.

Anybody know if you can combine this with a £5/£10 voucher from Coke Zone?

never had a problem downloading and storing it on a dvd before. if i remember correctly it stores the install in a cache folder in an ea downloader directory, that you can burn onto single or dual layer dvd. although i havent backed up anything from there for a while, so maybe ea have made it awkward to do it now.

certainly agree with their policy of 1 year downloads but i assume this must be down to server space on their servers.

It's alright for the tech savvy people who know that the install files are there, but some less aware wouldn't be able to back it up - I don't think there's something on the front-end that lets you do this - but it could have changed since people moaned about it before.

Giving you the 1 year for downloads isn't due to server space - all files for download should be stored centrally, with perhaps a license key which is stored for you (no more than a few meg max) so I can't see why they can't give you infinite retention ala steam, oh well. :-)
