This *is* a budget title, I'm puzzled why anyone would think different and even more confused by you're making an utterly irrelevant comparison to a game like Call of Duty which is £40 because it has a massive development team.

Axiom Verge is not that large or long and while the retro graphics are fun to begin with, I found them a bit tiring after a while. A more appropriate comparison would be Ori and the Blind Forest which is another Metroidvania game and a similar price but I thought it was much better. It's a stunningly beautiful game with an incredible soundtrack and incredibly polished gameplay, I've played through it may times and thought it superb every time. Axiom Verge on the other hand was decent enough for a playthrough but no more, hence I thought it worth the tenner i paid for it but no more than that and certainly not £30

It's close, Metroid edges it for me!

I wouldn't say so, it's certainly a solid Metroidvania game, the abilities are creative and the retro style is well implemented but it doesn't feel that deep a game. I thought it was decent for a tenner but wouldn't pay more for it.
