What's the main difference between the 2 (price of the bigger 2DS is tempting at only £75)?I've never bought one before but played on a Nintendo DS Lite years ago (Sims 3) and quite enjoyed it as it was quite a different gaming experience.I've now been thinking of getting myself a 2DS XL but not sure when or which package etc to buy. I'm willing to wait and see if there is a price drop or better offers in the next few months. Some questions that I need help with:1) Which Pokemon game on the DS has all of the old characters that I can remember from watching Pokemon as a kid? I've never played Pokemon on the DS before. The characters I can remember are Bulbasaur, Charmander and (obviously) Pikachu.2) This may sound silly but how do you actually play Pokemon games? As I say, I always wanted to play Pokemon but never had a DS console before.I'd really appreciate some help.Thank you.Bill

    Hi Bill,

The 2DS XL folds, and has a bigger, brighter screen and supposedly extra processing power. Both will play the same games though. I would advise the 2DS XL as used to have a 3DS and 3DS XL and the extra real estate is very noticeable.

A bit more detail on the differences here: trustedreviews.com/new…677

In regards to 1) I think almost all the Pokemon games have Pikachu in, I believe Bulbasaur Charmander and Squirtle are excluded from the newer games (ultra sun/moon) but you can get the older games for about 8 quid each as Downloads (Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, and about a tenner for Pokemon Crystal) . These games are absolute classics and are still great games to this day, and contain all the old Pokemon you know and love from the TV show and I would definitely recommend them as a starting point.

    2) They are very much an RPG type game. You play a Pokemon trainer, you get a starter Pokemon from a choice of 3, and then go around and battle other trains and wild pokemon in order to level up your Pokemon to get stronger. You can also catch wild pokemon to join your team. The general format of the games is to beat the 8 gym leaders to get the badges, and then beat the "elite four". This is the basic story, but then obviously the hardcore will want to try "catch 'em all" and complete their Pokedex by getting all pokemon (some of which will need to be traded with other players as some versions have exclusive pokemon.

Maybe watch a few videos on youtube to see how the older games play and if they would feel too dated for you. The new games are great quality and even though I don't know the new Pokemon still thoroughly enjoyed them so would recommend them as great games.

Hope this helps you somewhat in your decisions!

Hi Bill The original Game Boy Pokemon games are available as Virtual Console games on 3DS Family Systems. That's the original Pokemon Red, Blue, and Special Pikachu Yellow versions. As well as the 2nd Generation Game Boy Colour games Gold, Silver, and the recently rereleased Crystal versions.
They are all available to download, and the G2 games are also available as a special GBC style cardboard box with download code inside.
They all have Game Boy / Game Boy Colour graphics, and modern Pokemon games are obviously alot more graphically enhanced.
So the basic premise of Pokemon is a rock/paper/scissors style gameplay, different types are strong and weak against certain types. The 3 starting Pokemon types are Grass, Fire, and water. Grass > Water > Fire > Grass
You wander around the game world encountering wild Pokemon and other Pokemon Trainers. Catch, train and level-up, learn new moves, evolve, build a great team of Pokemon, go from town to town exploring and battle each Pokemon Gym, progressing through the story until you get to the Elite Four Pokemon Masters at the climax of the games.
The latest Pokemon games Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Moon did away with Gyms but I haven't played through them so don't know how much they differ and whether they still have the Elite Four at the end

For £134, think I'd be more inclined to purchasing it than for £150 (though realise that sadly there won't be a Super Mario game?).As for this:"If you want a 2DS black & blue console with Super Mario Bros or Mario Kart, or white & red console with Tomodachi Life, you can get it for effectively £64.99 with the £10 of £75 code by buying another eligible item at the same time. Could be a game eg Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D, or just a cheap item such as a 99p sim card the offers end *tomorrow*"Would you also be able to please provide the link to this? Think I'm going to end up buying one or the other (probably the Pokeball one).Would really appreciate it.Thank you.P.SThink it's doable by adding the Pokeball edition with £14 games such as the Zelda one then putting the code at checkout right? What is this Zelda game about? Never heard of it but would this be a good, fun pick up and play game?

Zelda is a fantasy action adventure game set in a world of elves, fairies, magic, and monsters. It has a great story, exploration, puzzles, and lots of enemies to defeat with all manner of weapons. It is my profile picture and has always been one of if not my favourite game of all time Yes I would definitely say it would be a good, fun pick up and play game
    *Links to follow*

Yes, that is exactly it - add Pokeball Edition 2DS XL and a game to basket then apply £20 off code

For 2DS - add console and game then apply £10 off code

    Mario Bros 2DS
    Mario Kart 2DS
    Tomodachi 2DS

3DS games sold by Tesco price low - high

Done. After deliberating for so long, I decided on the standard 2DS. 3 main reasons why:

    1) Cheapest so best value
    2) Bought the Mario Kart version with the Zelda game so a total of £78.99 (will also buy Pokemon Blue from the eShop for £8.99 so total spend will be only £87.98). Saved over £55 getting this package instead of the XL one.
    3) Screen size - I was looking at the top screen size of the old DS Lite which I played Sims 3 on and realised that the screen size on the 2DS is actually slightly larger than the DS Lite (3.53 vs 3 inch if I've done my research correctly). The DS Lite was comfortable to play on and the screen size didn't bother me at all. So, hopefully, I think this 2DS will be just fine.

Thank you to all who helped me in my decision making. Looking forward to owning my first Nintendo console!

Pokémon yellow is tempting me purely because there's colour to it whereas …Pokémon yellow is tempting me purely because there's colour to it whereas the blue is just plain black and white. I'd like to start with the first Pokémon game ever made but now thinking if I should just buy the yellow Pikachu version.I've read some articles online which briefly explain the differences between the games and mention which exclusive Pokémons are available etc in each game. Someone on a thread commented that if you watched the TV series, then the yellow version would probably be best.Which one would you personally recommend? Red, Blue or Yellow?By the way, what do you think of Pikachu detective? The new game that's coming out in March? Sounds quite funny if I'm honest.Oh, I'm hoping there's a 4GB SD card inside the 2DS. If not, and it's a 2GB card instead, will that have enough storage space for Mario kart 7 (which is pre-installed so not sure if it's on the SD card?), Zelda & Pokémon?

Yes Mario Kart will already be installed on the memory card.
3DS game carts don't require installing and their save files are saved on the game cart itself.
Game Boy games are very small file size.
If a game update (patch) is available it will let you know but they aren't mandatory, although possibly could be for online play (I'm not sure).
I would think you'll be ok even with 2GB. When (if) it comes to needing a bigger card it's just a drag 'n' drop job.

Detective Pikachu looks interesting, I haven't seen much about the gameplay yet though. They are making a film of it too

I was surprised to find that Pokemon Red and Blue on VC were colourless as I always played my original Blue on Game Boy Colour which adds a little bit of colour to the game (just 2 colours at a time). I suppose Nintendo wanted to keep them true to their Game Boy origins.
But Pokemon Yellow was actually developed with GBC in mind and they added additional colour to it, so that's why Yellow on VC has the colour.
If you want to choose between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle at the start of the game, don't mind that it's monochrome, and want to play the game as it originally was, go for Red/Blue.
If you want to start the game with Pikachu, have him follow behind you, hear him say his name, be able to additionally find all 3 starter Pokemon through gameplay, have added things from the cartoon, and it all be in a bit of colour, choose Yellow.
It's a tough one as I'm sure lots of people would want to play the original game first.
I suppose you could always play Blue first then if you wanted Yellow after
But then my view is skewed from playing Blue with the bit of colour. I suppose the amount of colour is very minor, and perhaps negligible ? It literally is 2 colours at once.
Yellow is also just 2 colours at once when you're walking around, but when you're in a battle the Pokémon are more colourful.
So I guess actually Blue and Red being monochrome doesn't really matter ? :/ As it would be hardly any colour at all. Decisions decisions!

So in Pokemon the various 'types' dictate how much damage an attack does. Every Pokemon is a 'type' eg Pikachu is Electric type. And most attacks are also a type. Pokemon learn mostly attacks of their own type.

eg. Electric is not very effective against Rock type, has no effect at all against Ground type (get it ? ) but is super effective against Flying type (and possibly Water type ? :/ can't quite remember lol )

So some type match-ups do make sense in terms of what would be strong/weak against what IRL.

Grass, Fire, and Water are probably the easiest ones to remember. Grass attacks are super effective against Water type pokemon (think of it as grass absorbs water), but not very effective against Fire type pokemon (as fire burns grass).
In-line with that, Fire attacks are super effective against Grass type pokemon, but not very effective against Water type pokemon (as water puts out fire).
And in-line, Water attacks are super effective against Fire type pokemon, but not very effective against Grass type pokemon.

There are quite a few different types though, and how they all match-up doesn't always make logical sense, so they're not all easy to remember. (not for me at least)

    Thanks for that. That helps.

Played a bit earlier but lost to Brock who had Geodude and something else.

Seems like I'm at a dead end now though. Can't seem to progress anywhere else so need to somehow find a way to defeat him.

Caught a Nidoruno. Regrettably, I defeated a level 12 one but then had to settle for a level 4 as the level 12 disappeared and didn't come back afterwards.

Yes you could then sell your 2DS if you wanted, not on here though, there used to be a For Sale / For Trade section on here but sadly they stopped that. Could sell it elsewhere though.Yes I got an original 3DS first, then I got a New 3DS (regular size, not XL) on an offer too good to miss! Then Tesco eBay had some returned Hyrule Edition New 3DS XL on good price and as I'm a Zelda fan I got one.I wasnt overly keen on the XL size when I first tried it but recently it doesn't seem as uncomfortable as it first did to me.I play my New 3DS the most. I got it with Pokemon Alpha Sapphire pre-installed, but haven't played that game much, also got good prices on Mario Kart 7 download code from eBay and New Super Mario Bros 2 from an Amazon seller. And I've got alot of games on cartridge. I keep some in this Mario question block case [Image] I think it's pretty cool. Press button on top and it pops openBulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander can be given to you from certain people in the game that you come accross. I don't know where they are, but if you always talk to people you see then you will find them

    Haha, no problem. Thanks.

I agree about the case - it does look quite cool.

Damn, when I first started playing, I used to stop and talk to all the people I'd come across but then got bored so just kept ignoring them. I'll definitely start talking to them all again then and keep an eye out. Cheers.

Thanks. Yeah, I tried to go again just to see what would happen but realised it makes no difference as I really need to try and catch some other Pokemon type then go and battle him. Next time I play, I need to try and catch certain Pokemon like Geodude and that Crow pokemon (forgotton its name). I have a habit of just defeating Pokemon so need to get into the habit of actually catching them so I can train them up for the battle against Brock.

You're right there, I didn't think of double checking that. Xenoblade and Fire Emblem are the only ones atm IIRC

Both will play the same games though. I would advise the 2DS XL as used to have a 3DS and 3DS XL and the extra real estate is very noticeable. A bit more detail on the differences here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/nintendo-2ds-vs-2ds-xl-2953677In regards to 1) I think almost all the Pokemon games have Pikachu in, I believe Bulbasaur Charmander and Squirtle are excluded from the newer games (ultra sun/moon) but you can get the older games for about 8 quid each as Downloads (Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, and about a tenner for Pokemon Crystal) . These games are absolute classics and are still great games to this day, and contain all the old Pokemon you know and love from the TV show and I would definitely recommend them as a starting point.2) They are very much an RPG type game. This is the basic story, but then obviously the hardcore will want to try "catch 'em all" and complete their Pokedex by getting all pokemon (some of which will need to be traded with other players as some versions have exclusive pokemon.Maybe watch a few videos on youtube to see how the older games play and if they would feel too dated for you. The new games are great quality and even though I don't know the new Pokemon still thoroughly enjoyed them so would recommend them as great games. Hope this helps you somewhat in your decisions!Bryn

Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. I now have a lot of thinking (and reading/watching YouTube videos) to do.

In terms of downloads, is it a bit like Playstation Network where you can buy games or download demos etc? And can this be done on the actual DS console and what size memory card would you recommend if I wanted to do this?

Also, in terms of RPG, is it a bit like Diablo? The game isn't played 'online' is it? Because I hate those kind of games.

Hi Bill The original Game Boy Pokemon games are available as Virtual …Hi Bill The original Game Boy Pokemon games are available as Virtual Console games on 3DS Family Systems. Grass > Water > Fire > GrassYou wander around the game world encountering wild Pokemon and other Pokemon Trainers.

Thank you for your help too. For the first time, thanks to you and bryngreen, I now have a slightly better understanding of Pokemon games.

What is the learning curve like? Is it steep or can you just pick up and play?

Thanks for the suggestion. If and when I buy the console and Pokemon, how would this be done? I have no idea how Nintendo consoles work as I only played Sims 3 (and the brain training game) on the DS Lite years ago.

Yes you use the Nintendo eShop to download the games, or redeem codes if you purchase a "code in a box". The games are very small so a 2gb/4gb memory card would more than suffice. It isn't like Diablo as the battles are turn based not real time, and no it's not online. Very much pick up and play and learn as you go, they're not overly technical.

Referring to buying the games as mentioned above you can do its either via the Nintendo Eshop which is like the PSN store, or you can buy the code from Amazon for example but again would still need to redeemed on the Eshop.

Realising that this deal is half the price, and comes with Pokemon Ultra Moon for 74.99, I'd maybe take the plunge into the 2ds as its half the outlay and if you don't like it you could sell it all on with very little loss. https://www.hotukdeals.com/visit/thread/2891550

Then you have one of the new pokemon games aswell! Although if you do want the bigger console this is a good deal and you could sell Super Mario on eBay for a bit sealed aswell. (Although I would strongly advise to play it, great game!)

The basic game principles are fairly simple, catch Pokemon, fight other Pokemon, move around the world. It was originally designed for children I think, so it’s fairly simple.

There is a lot more to it in terms of high level battling, but that’s largely irrelevant for the story/main game, and I wouldn’t want to confuse you with it!

Essentially you get to the part where you can go online (it makes it fairly obvious, it’s called festival plaza) and then add my code, and give me yours (from the menu on the DS) it would be easier to explain when you actually have the system, let me know when you do and I can walk you through it

Thanks for the clarification, my friend. Much appreciated. I'm just not too sure if I should go ahead and purchase either this or the 2DS deal on at the moment or wait until April/May when there might be better offers around (Easter/May half-term).

    What does everyone think?

I don't think there will be better offers around personally, not to the point where it's worth the wait anyway.

In your opinion, what is the biggest difference between the £74.99 2DS version as opposed to this 2DS XL edition (just in terms of the console and not necessarily the deal as much)? I've read articles online and watched YouTube videos but can't decide at the moment.

For me, the price of the standard 2DS is seriously tempting but I don't like its size. That's the only drawback for me. I read that the screen on the 2DS XL is of better quality and, if I'm honest, having played a handheld DS years ago like this 2DS XL, I think I would probably prefer this as it's more compact. But, just wish it was similarly priced to the 2DS - £75 seems like a bargain at the moment.

Screen brightness and screen size, both use the same screen resolutions though. £75 is a massive bargain and although the 2DS XL would be the obvious choice if money was no object, I honestly can't recommend it at double the price! Especially as the 75 quid one comes with Ultra Moon.

In the respect of is it a very good pokemon game, yes. The only issue is you won't recognise alot of Pokemon, but it does have a few old ones in you will recognise so won't be totally alien either.

Have you considered getting a Game Boy Colour or a Game Boy Advance ?

If it's mainly the original Pokemon game you are interested in, it's also worth noting the GBA remakes Leaf Green and Fire Red. They have the graphics of the 3rd generation Pokemon games Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Good luck on whatever you decide
