Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue I & II is an open world action adventure combining jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, RPG elements, and memorable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern gaming, including open world city exploration, and was the game that coined the Quick Time Event (QTE). It was one of the first games with a persistent open world, where day cycles to night, weather changes, shops open and close and NPCs go about their business all on their own schedules. Its engrossing epic story and living world created a generation of passionate fans, and the game consistently makes the list of "greatest games of all time".
In 1986, teenage jujitsu artist Ryo Hazuki returns to the dojo of his father, Iwao Hazuki, only to witness his murder by a Chinese man, Lan Di. Lan Di steals a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror. Ryo vows to avenge his father’s death and sets out tracing Lan Di’s path.
The first game in the series, Shenmue begins the tale as Ryo travels around Yokosuka, Japan, gathering clues about his father’s murder and dealing with nefarious gangsters along the way. The sequel Shenmue II continues Ryo’s quest, this time crossing the sea to Hong Kong, China. Ryo ventures deeper into the criminal underworld, meeting martial arts masters who aid him on his journey and offer insight into his father’s death, and unravels the mysteries of the Dragon Mirror that his father kept hidden.

Sega have been on a roll these last couple of years with Yakuza localisations etc, let's just hope they can keep it up!
Ordered instantly.
YSnet, the developers of Shenmue 3 secured a new publisher (Deep Silver - same guys who publish Persona, Yakuza etc in UK/Europe), who gave them some additional funds to work with. In order to use the funds to create a big and better game, Yu Suzuki announced a delay that will push the game to the last half of 2018.
The general belief at the moment, is that Shenmue 3 will be pushed into Q1 of 2019. This will allow for some additional time to polish the game, but will also allow time for players who are new to the series, to play these re-releases of Shenmue 1 & 2 to fully understand the story. The fans have been waiting 17 years, we can wait a few more months :D! (edited)
This is probably the best videogame ever made, pure art and I'm still listening to the soundtrack.
Can't wait to play it again! (in japanese)
Genuinely really happy with the price point on this, even the deal earlier was acceptable to me. So yeah... needless to say, i've ordered.
I'd play Space Harrier for a bit first.
I see......
Kinda adds to the charm I think! The graphics will compare terribly but hopefully anyone playing for the first time will see it for what it was at the time, some 18 years ago now. Man, that really is how long we've been waiting...
Shenmue 3 is out at the end of this year, shockwaver13!
The main theme and Shenhua’s theme are spine tinglingly beautiful
I kept my birthday money for months in anticipation for the original release and that was an impossible task as a child.
It's a part of gaming history, though I guess the nostalgia feeling is never the same unless you actually lived that gaming period. Luckily as I am old I've pretty much been gaming since I could first arcade games like Hunchback and my parents bought me a 2600.
Shenmue was unlike anything else at the time but I'm not sure unless you grew up in the era where the Japanese ruled the gaming scene and everyone was into Beat Takeshi films and wanted a Nissan Skyline, that it will grab you in quite the same way.
Ordered from base.com based on the commments on here thanks
Have some heat!
Not going to order yet as I can see someone doing it even cheaper (suspect base will undercut this). Heat though of course.
Just have to get through the first hour of asking people if they remember seeing a black car on the day the snow turned to rain.
it is a remaster its running at a higher res is in widescreen and will probably have newer textures, it doesent need to be in 60fps to be considered a remaster
Haha thanks! I hope you enjoy them once again!
Even though the graphics can take some getting used to, the game itself has aged very well in my opinion. Till this day, I have not managed to find a game that pulls off such an immersive experience such as Shenmue (Witcher 3 or Yakuza 0/Kiwami being the closest).
The story, music and the atmosphere that it creates is something incredibly rare and special. I am very excited to see what a new generation of gamers think of it :P
I thought you haven't even played them? Either way, the game comes packaged with new controls and an option for Japanese voices for both games... Really not sure why people are just posting without reading much into what this version provides.
Not sure if this'll be the best deal on these games, but just to get more people to play these genuine classics... Heat!
You know what a remaster is, right? In terms of games, it's an upscale with maybe higher res textures. If you want a remake, you're not getting that. You don't hear people complaining about remasters of films not using new effects and sets.
The industry really needs to take five and educate people on the difference between remasters and remakes, this is getting silly.
both zelda remasters didnt
I love your passion, I can't wait for this either havnt played since early 2000s. nostalgia at its best
