People saying other boxes are better.
Android TV is the main selling point here along with proper Netflix integration.

Also, it seems to get more bad reviews than good but that may be because they have done little to nothing with the hardware above the mi box 3. 8GB readable/writable storage only lasts around 10,000 hours before needing to be replaced. Less than that really, if you see somebody's new box and realise how slow yours has gotten.

I thought reviews said it was worth it for the Chromecast alone

Things have moved on considerably from 2GB RAM and 8GB of storage.
Similar money for a M8S Pro L with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage, with a similar remote.

My posts are still under review, so this reply could take ages too.
Some reviews say it is worth it, most reviews rate it bad, but that honestly only seems to be because it is essentially the same box but with a chromecast licence.
In any case, this is not a bargain, It's normal price. Imho, whn looking for a 'bargain', I am looking for something that is lower than it's normal price for a (probably) limited time. You can pick this up any time at this price or lower.

Yes but the Android TV interface is far more user friendly than the interface that comes with those boxes.

It does do HDMI CEC to turn TV on and off. I didn't think CEC does TV volume too. Could be wrong. Mine certainly doesn't.

No, It's the mi box s 4K that I am referring to. It's release price was £45 ($59). It sells for £40 in flash sales often, and it's normal price is around £47 - £50 depending on currency fluctuation. It only goes up to a higher price sometimes to make it look like it's on sale. It's blurb was the it was 'more affordable than the original' and was released after the mi box 4 (white box).
Initial pre-orders were in Walmart in the US, and on Chinese sites if we wanted them on this side of the atlantic.
It has the netflix shortcut and is believed to come with blockable firmware (they can block the box if required).
They also have the same hardware as the mi box 3 except for the chromecast and it has newer version of Android out of the box. The main difference is software.
And almost all the reviews are bad at the lower launch price of £45.

I just got one of them and Netflix doesn't work on it.
If you don't use Netflix I would recommend it though. It's very good at what it does

Got the previous gen version when they were clearing out to make way for this. Great little boxes. Official netflix support, chromecast built in and the Android TV UI is decent too. Only annoying thing is my remote has started playing up and doesn't turn the box on from standby anymore. But once I power off/power on the box to get it to start, the remote works fine again.

Not enough in this new version to get me to upgrade for now but will get one when the current one needs replacing..

I thought mine had a similar issue, but it just seems to be slow to wake. If I mash the buttons for 15-20 seconds it comes on nearly every time. Why it can't just sleep and wake nicely using the power button on the remote is beyond me however.

Good box for the money, but if I was buying again I would just wait till the next Shield offer and spend a bit more.

All CEC support changing the audio volume (including yours), it just depends on where your speakers are in the chain, if they require CEC.
If you just use the default built in speakers on your tv, then your regular tv remote will just put the volume up on the tv (no CEC required). If you use the remote from something else and it has volume control buttons, then that device will use CEC to decrease / increase your tv speaker volume.

If you have an AV receiver, CEC in the chain will allow you to control the volume regardless of which device it is.

Thanks, on further investigation it seems Amazon have just stuck an IR blaster into the new remote, which I guess is how they're controlling the volume:
