Got to admit it last time I checked after long term sick you had to get checked out to go back to work. I guess they've changed it to take the load off the NHS and save a few pounds. (edited)

Depends on what you work / your shifts. If your Mon-Fri, then yeah, it's valid for the last day (i.e Monday 1st), so you would go back on the Tuesday. If you do shift work, I'd check with your employer, as they may give you Tuesday as one of your scheduled days off.
