This model is a cut down version using older Brompton parts (they are clearing old stock) and I think the older front stem but still good value for money. Only one color choice though. (edited)

Bought an S2L 3 months ago now (£1000 i think) but have ridden the M3L and P6L
From my experience the M handlebar is great for comfortable ride unless your super tall then get the H
3 speed offers the best value and flexibility 6 speed is unnecessary, but I'm happy on my 2 and its really light
Mudguards worth picking up if you intend to go out in the wet
Carrier block and a bag really useful especially for commuting (no sweaty back!)
I got my bag and block from Cycle surgery as they were offering free block with every bag and they were £10 cheaper. Its also super simple to fit the block yourself
Been commuting happily back and forth from Streatham to Kings cross now (10 Mile journey) for three months and the bike has been brilliant. Had my fair share of people walking out in front of me and brakes have worked really well for emergency stops (was a little worried initially as I have only used hydraulic brakes for the past 7 years)
Nice bike but I doubt it would see sunset with the thieves in this town.
C2W schemes are no longer burdened with the crappy £1000 limit, so that makes the better specced bikes the same price.- Anonymous User

Great price, just be aware that this is the 'budget Brompton' - it's missing the mudguards and luggage block, and has non-folding pedals and slightly cheaper tyres. You can add all those afterwards but the mudguards are the only bit you really need to add.butpatbut09/07/2019 13:45

I think the point is that you can fold it up and take into the office with …I think the point is that you can fold it up and take into the office with you - I had a couple of cheap and nasty bikes nicked when I was commuting, and the only way to overcome it was to keep it beyond harm's reach!The Brompton is the design classic against which all other folders are measured - there are likely to be "degrees of desirability" and I wouldn't be surprised if this was towards the "economy" end of the range, but build quality is pretty reasonable, and they probably hold their value better than "no-name" immitations.
They hold their value remarkably well. I sold my old Brompton M6R I think it was to a woman in South Korea for more than I bought it for! (She was desperate to get her hands on one of these !)
Also the frame and wheels are the important bits, the rest is just dressing, so if you find something is a bit poor you can just upgrade later. The frame is brazed and fully painted, including internally, it will last *forever*. (edited)

Unusual to have a discount code that works on Brommies. Brompton usually wont let their bikes be discounted.
But it seems to work, so a nice £75 saving.

On the Halford's web page it says the bike comes with a lifetime guarantee on frame and forks so this must be something Halfords offer on top of the standard 5 year guarantee Brompton offers. Definitely worth doing a screengrab of that if you buy one as it could be useful. Such warranties are limited to manufacturing defects not fair wear and tear i.e. normal fatigue of the metal as you use the bike but if for some reason a weld failed that would normally be covered as a manufacturing defect but a crack in a tube caused by fatigue 10 years from now wouldn't. It is possible for welds to fail. Pretty sure the Brompton frame is a mixture of steels, chromoly steel and high tensile steel in order to adjust the properties of the frame for comfort and strength. I believe where you are welding different steels together there is slightly more chance of welds failing probably a marginal difference though and would depend on the different steels used.- Also if you need a cheaper folding bike Go Outdoors have their Claris equipped folding bike for only £199. Fantastic price for the spec.

I'd advise you to steer well clear of this bike. It has the same frame/hinge design as on the Tern folding bicycles - and they have been subject to a myriad of recalls. It just doesn't seem like aluminium in this design is capable of enduring the stresses that such bikes are put under.
The Brompton design is far better - as is the frame material.

I forgot Bromptons were brazed and in fact that is by far the best approach to joining different steels so there you go. I think I got confused as Bromptons with titanium parts have welded parts for the titanium components. Welding different steels is I believe more likely to cause issues but obviously they are engineered in order to minimise such problems but different steel alloys react different ways and welding is a slightly destructive process where the join is. I fully understand the difference in properties between steel and aluminium and have often posted about aluminium not having an endurance limit. Steel frames do fatigue though and are often taken beyond their endurance limit but that is much less often than aluminium which fatigues with every use and even has issues with air hardening over time even when not used which can make it become brittle as it ages. Brompton frames do fail and crack, some people put such ridiculous miles on them and keep them a long time and many people have used them beyond their weight limits but no question a fantastic quality frame with a very long lifespan for most people.yadiyada09/07/2019 23:42

It doesn't compare to a Brompton but it's still great value and the Tern situation was caused by using many different factories of which only 1 I think was making the frame incorrectly and I'm unsure if the frames from that supplier were certified. Tern don't make frames themselves or at least didn't at the time so bought in all components from other suppliers for assembly and I'm not even sure if they even assembled them themselves. Even a 9 year old child of minimal weight broke one of the Tern bikes. However this Compass folding bike has been extensively tested for the certification and would have gone through many ageing tests and Go Outdoors / Compass probably buy the complete bike from one factory. I don't think you have to worry about it's quality although in fairness I don't think it would last as long as Brompton. I'm sure the current Tern bikes are fine too as that recall was a while ago now. Personally I think the stresses of a hinge are better handled by steel over the long term but aluminium can be overbuilt in order to be strong but that does reduce some of their weight advantages in folding bikes. The Dahon Curl which is a fairly blatant clone of the Brompton in aluminium seems to have similar pricing, horrible ride quality and likely a much shorter lifespan.- For anyone that bought the B75 there is a £25 voucher card by doing a quick survey for purchases on the Brompton website, takes around 5 mins to complete to get your code.
