    Why always London

Maybe for those days when they don’t want to show the thought the sun shines out of their backsides!

Think I’d rather visit Chernobyl than parts of London! (edited)

I have just come back from Kiev a couple of weeks ago. What an amazing city - absolutely loved the place. Spent five days there and that was enough to get to see everything we wanted. The Metro is superb and works like clockwork. It is really cheap to drink and eat out. The parks in and around the centre are lovely in the evening and have people teaching dancing for free. So civilised - in fact I was gobsmacked at just how smart the place was. Especially the Western side of the island where Hidropark station was. Really nice 'beaches' with restaurants doing charcoal grilled meats and vegetables. Would highly advise heading down here in the early evening and getting a seat overlooking the Lavra.

I'm here in Kyiv right now for a month improving my Russian. It's a cool city, but keep in mind pretty much no one speaks English or if they do it's not a good level. Food is pretty cheap and good quality, booze is cheap like a quid for a bottle of vodka and a quid for malboros (I don't smoke). It's interesting walking down the road seeing every other girl look like a model, makes a nice change from the UK lol. Also there's no chavs here to say "oi what u looking at mate" when you accidentally make eye contact, so pretty happy lol

Cabs are pretty cheap too, my most expensive uber has been about £4 for like a 25 minute ride. People seem pretty nice, customer service isn't great in most places, but even ukranians find customer service workers rude. There's also an active neo nazi movement called Azov so if you're non-white like me, you need to watch out a bit but you should be fine as they don't really bother people, they're very rare to see anyways. It's not advisable to be out after 12 imo too. Also there's a foreign guy I've heard about that goes around targeting foreigners saying do you want to have a drink I'm lost or something then drugs and robs you lol, so google search scams before you go. I used the Lonely Planet book as a guide to what is around and worth seeing. There is a good guided walk that takes in a lot of the main sites of the city that took the best part of a day with stops for a bite to eat and look in some shops. The Upper and Lower Lavra are well worth seeing and can take up the best part of half a day to see everything. Don't need to buy a guided ticket - just pay for entrance and take your time looking around. While you are that end of the city have a wander down to the Rodina Mat and enjoy the parks full of tanks and other bits of planes/helicopters. This will take up most of a day with the Lavra too.

Spend another day wandering round the very hip and cool area of Podil and go to the Chernobyl Museum. From here cross the footbridge to the Island and marvel at the beauty and greenery so close to a city centre. Walk South onto the next island and on the East coast find the bars/restaurants overlooking the Lavra and get some lovely charcoal grilled food. Look out for the area of the park where in the evenings pensioners come together to do some dancing.

If you fancy a bit of a walk then head up to the area around St Sophia's where there is also the stunning St Michaels Monastry and St Andrews. Very close by is the whacky Peyzazhna Alley which is worth a quick detour. Also check out the cute little Fenicular at the back of St Michaels. The area around the Golden Gate is lovely, it is worth heading up to Schevchenko park (find the blini stand at the back of the restaurant - they were amazing) from here and enjoy the evening strolling around the small park with an ice cream and watching people just chilling out. A short walk from there to University Metro station is the Botanical Gardens which are wonderful first thing or late evening.

There is at least three or four days of stuff to see and do when you add in the museums as well. I didn't go to Chernobyl as when I was there it was in the mid 30's and I didn't want to sit for four hours on a coach with jeans and long-sleeved top on!! And besides there is loads to see and do without going there in my opinion. (edited)

Wonderful city to visit with so much going on. Everyone seems to be out each evening enjoying the setting sun, some food and drinks either in the parks, along the boulevards or along the river. Apart from the crazy traffic it is a surprisingly interesting city with loads to do and a thriving art/hipster vibe at the moment. Easy to get around with the metro (costs absolutely nothing!). Some awkward moments with the language but everyone has a smartphone nowadays with google translate.

Would recommend doing a 2 day Chernobyl tour (as in staying in the exclusion zone for one night) as you get to see a lot more and do some "independent" exploration of Pripyat.

No - you need to go on an organised tour. And it is very strict on this for obvious reasons. You possibly could try and get someone to drive you near the exclusion zone but there is strict security entering the actual area.

Not really. People are curious, it's just in our nature. Just because you don't understand doesn't make everyone else weird.

Plus watching a TV series doesn't rule out wanting to go somewhere, if that was the case no one would ever travel anywhere!

December isn't exactly peak period for Kiev, personally I try to avoid continental winters, they aren't pleasant.

To be honest unless you have a valid interest or occupation a Chernobyl visit is of dubious merit. While the security is pretty strict it's still Ukraine and some of the tour operators aren't exactly on the up and up and will bend or even break the rules. Quite a few incidents in the last few years of people going to areas that aren't allowed and even removing things from the exclusion zone which isn't allowed (and deeply stupid).

Grab a cheap flight this summer, it's a busy place so lots of flights and good value year round.
