Ah. I see! Do those rings fit a car battery? :/ Looks small haha! Thanks

Mine came with these in the box and yes they will fit a battery (The Nut and bolt of course)
I've revived several "dead" batteries with the reconditioning setting. Excellent charger albeit expensive.

I've been using this for about 2 years keeping the battery of a car I use fairly occasionally charged up. It's attached permanently to the battery via the CTEK connect extension. Working flawlessly so far.

These aren't discounted often, so heated.

I tried one of these a while back and it wouldn’t charge my flat battery. Replaced with one of these and it hasn’t let me down:

Great batter charger this, if you have a weekend or occasional car it’s great to buy the plug lead for your battery then topping it up is a breeze. Also has a handy little LED indicator on the lead with a traffic light style system

To be honest if you don't need to charge batteries below 7 volts and you can take a longer charge time buy an 'Ultimate Speed' charger from LIDL for £14. I've got the CTEK 5.0 and 3 Ultimate Speed chargers and they all charge/condition the same. For me the only advantage with the CTEK is when power is switched on it will automatically turn on to the last mode you used. With the Ultimate Speed charger when power is switched on you have to actually turn the charger on at the front.

Obviously the Ultimate Speed 2.8amps is nearly half of the CTEK but I think most people using these are trickling (including my neighbour using 2 for his motorbikes) so you don't really need the extra amps.

Oh and if you chop the clips off the end of the CTEK you can wire it to a cigar lighter plug which allows you to charge your vehicle through a cigar lighter socket (if it is constantly live) This I think is an accessory you can actually buy but it's cheaper to make one yourself.

    Voted hot for the price

These are very effective at keeping lightly used cars charged. Couple of points though - the ctek use switched mode power supplies which oscillate at audible frequencies when they are lightly loaded (i.e. between charge cycles), and it's a *loud* whistle, you wouldn't want it in your living space. Fine for the garage though.

For this reason I have preferred to use the opti-mate range which are silent in use and otherwise identical (just less well distributed in the UK).

Secondly watch the cables. If the connectors start to get damp and corrode the resistance increases to the point where the charger can no longer reliably detect the battery condition. Mainly an issue if you have to have extension cables outside.

Finally most modern cars are coming with stop/start and have their own electronic battery state tracking equipment - when wiring in an external charger you should only use it if you believe the battery charge is low (deep cycle batteries tend to be left 85% charged, not full like lead acid) and most importantly you have to charge the battery through the monitor equipment, not bypass it. If you directly connected to the battery itself the tracking device gets confused and you will have issues with stop/start and many other stuff too.

One other point.. these are not fast chargers. They can take 24-48 hours to recharge a flat battery! Though they can do it they are designed for maintenance charging, i.e. trickle charging.

Optimate example: OptiMate 4 Dual Program 12V Motorcycle Automatic Battery Charger Optimiser amazon.co.uk/dp/…5QO

    There are others. (edited)

These are superb , definitely the best smart charger for this price.
I’ve had one for years and this is the best price I’ve seen.
These units can recondition batteries and revive batteries.

Hi, what do you mean by plug lead? (Sorry) I was hoping it would come with it?

I have a weekend car and would hope to keep 2 a rings permanently connected to the battery and then connect the charger as and when... is this possible? (Does it come with it?)

I was advised by the main importers tech dept that if it does show a snowflake, & you activate that mode, the form of modulation is ok for stop start batteries, ..other than that there is the dedicated stop/start battery charger.

Love these but it does have a weak point in the button may stop working after some time. You can fairly easily modify it to add a new one (I used a momentary push button switch) but this obviously involves opening them up. Otherwise it's been flawless for me.

(would be happier if they'd use a microswitch).

It's a 'bubble' switch - they just wear out. I drilled a small hole in the casing, screwed on a momentary push button and just soldered some wire to the contacts on the board. Fairly easy to do but of course mains voltage etc be careful. To my mind either they use a 'proper' switch or just get the darn thing to remember the mode (so you don't need to press it each time you power on). It annoyed me enough to spend 20mins fixing it anyway

To be fair a £20 charger from Halfords would have done the job for you. These smart chargers are best suited to maintenance and trickle charging, that's what you're paying for.

This is an awesome charger. I have the 10amp model the MXS10. Every month my car complains that the battery is low so I charge overnight with this. It safely charges AGM batteries. My car has front and rear dash cams, heated seats and an aftermarket immobiliser so I use up the battery quickly with very short journeys daily.

I do put my foot down a lot so end up draining the battery quicker, especially in the summer. Driving in sports mode for short journeys also doesn't help.

The short journeys do kill it, no question. Takes about five minutes running to recharge the capacity used to start the car, basically.

Obviously the electrical power generated by the alternator and available to charge the battery is more or less independent of rpm or engine activity level, minus anything you use for lights, heaters, etc. The regulator on the alternator sees to that.

I've got one of these. Quite a revelation if you're used to the old fashioned humming big box chargers. It works very well for normal charging, but I have never had any luck with the reconditioning function.

Whatever, this comes from the top who bother to look inside of batteries though.

& with regards to the traffic light variant, LOTS of reports as to its fallibility regardless, if you have one i'd still keep a battery voltage tester in the cig lighter its going to give a better indicator.

I use the cheaper version, clip & go ..happy with that
My garage (agricultural engineers) also cite concern about hooking up a regular charger to a dedicated stop start battery.
