My name is Alex. I thought you'd caught me the other day. I couldn't turn the radio on for your lovely mum, because I was trying to get out of the back rapido.

Interesting Post, Thanks for Sharing, Alexa Skills are now in the 1000s but its got me thinking if I could create a unique skill, so may look more deeper into this, Amazingly though Many Echo Owners do not know what a Alexa Skill is nor have ever tried enabling them, they just use it for its more basic functions, but when you get to know Alexa and the skills that can be enabled you can have so much fun & learn a great deal, but its easy to go OTT with the skills and simply forget about which skills you actually have, its also quite easy to enable skills without realising it, I have 7 skills enabled and that's enough. Anyhow Interesting post, thanks.

You could change the name to computer. I would imagine that your mum would think of it more like a computer than a person in that circumstance?

Exactly this , every single bit of technology in the device is entirely around listening and processing those 4 words all other speech recognition is done by uploading the recording the main server where higher powered computers can do a far better job at speach recognition! (edited)

Hot! You should be able to use something like Voiceflow (voiceflow.com) to build your skill - no coding required.

I've published my new Alexa skill, its called "Will's Fun Facts", its got the same icon as my HUKD icon:
    38721533-q5iUC.jpg
Please enable and use it, and I will do the same for your skill, message me after you have done it with your skill name.

You can also enable it from here

    amazon.co.uk/dp/…1-1

If you visit that link on your phone, it should automatically start up Alexa app or even allow you to enable the skill from the web browser (if you're logged into your Amazon account). (edited)

I have been meaning to learn how to develop an Alexa skill too and this offer just gives me an added incentive, thinking with Xmas around the corner to do something for the kids with Santa theme, if not anything, might be a fun thing for my 4 year old. And in the bargain if I end up bagging an echo dot for it, then that’s the cherry on top glad also that you found the post of some use

You have to put some hours in, but there are a few tutorials out there, developer.amazon.com/en-…ces for example.

If you know Python or Nodejs, it's pretty easy, JSON goes in and JSON comes out. Some good python example code at github.com/aws….py

There are templates for skills, meaning no real developing skills required. For example you can create a quiz and give 4 possible answers, you then give the correct answer and Alexa does all the work for you. It's just a case of creating 100 or so questions tbh, no programming skills required.

Edit* Easiest way to create a skill blueprints.amazon.com/

You could even just copy 100 questions out of a few quiz books (edited)

For those wondering if the skills from blueprints.amazon.com work or not - its fine. I submitted a skill last night and it got reviewed and approved. I also followed up with an email and got the below reply :

Thank you for your message. We understand you have a question about your participation in the marketing promotion for European developers.

We are glad to confirm receipt of your online application for this campaign on Oct 20.
As your skill XXXXXXX was published a few hours ago on our store, kindly allow up to 60 days in order to receive the prize for achieving this milestone.

Thanks for all your interest in Alexa.

So I am going to assume all is well and I should have a shiny echo dot sorted sooner rather then later

Not sure how tricky SSL is from their default containers though. But if you're going to self-host a text file as a hack, you could just hard-code the values in API.

    Thanks for your reply bud.
But you may as well have written that in chinese tbh as I'm new to any coding language.

I did watch all Mr robot though that's got to count for something lol...

I'm guessing I'm wanting to do more than i should be at the start. Just didn't want to just submit same ole sh*t for a reward. And now I'm not interested in the freebies anyway. I'll take my time and see what resources I can come across that help me do what I want.
    Thanks again.

And while replying to you I got the golden vampire flamedeer and won a £10 amazon voucher so thanks again. (edited)
