Good point, forgot about that part in this case!

Sort the remote out first, that's the issue, new batteries or repair it as suggested. Then connect the wifi

Reset both. Fire stick first. Then remove, then rest your routers, then it’s new start and you add device etc or new network, once connected it should be fine from there if auto connection

I have now sorted it out after googling about it and finding a youtube video on how to switch networks on an Amazon Firestick without a remote. As I said earlier, my remote had new batteries in it and it would not work at all, even after trying out the suggestions above. The problem was, was that the remote was set up for my old Plusnet router and I needed two smart phones and my old Plusnet log in details to do this. I had to create a Hotspot with my old router details and use one smart phone to connect to the other smart phone. Once this was set up and done, I could use one smart phone as a remote and go to the Amazon Firestick settings on my tv to change the network to Vodafone. Once this was done, I could then use the remote after everything was paired. Your remote doesn't pair and has nothing to do with your previous router.

Your remote connects to your Firestick and your Firestick connects to your router.

Is your remote possibly broken?

Your remote is not letting you do anything? What do you mean? Change the batteries.

You need to go to the fire stick settings and click network and add a network from there - using your remote.

Hold the home button down on the remote to pair it

Also have remote app for your phone. Makes it easier if you typing alot or entering web addresses or copy and paste etc.

Is there not an option in the settings menu on the Firestick to do a factory reset? If so then just do that and then set it up again to your new WiFi router.

Reconnect (old) Plusnet router to mains. Let Firestick connect to old Plusnet router. Let Firestick find new router's wifi. Enter pass for new router's wifi. This assumes your remote is functional beyond having decent batteries.

Is your remote the original remote that you have been using for the Firestick and it is the original Firestick i.e. you don't have two Firesticks and possibly mixed them up?

When was the last time you used it, if it is the original configuration you were using?

As with previous comments, check / change the batteries.

If you can't get your remote to work with new batteries, with the Firestick on and booted up, point your remote directly at your Firestick, with no obstacles in between (straight signal path) and depending on the Firestick / remote, either press and hold the 'home' for 10-15 secs, or press and hold the button with the three lines for the same amount of time to pair the remote to the Firestick.

The remote would not pair like this as it was set up for my old Plusnet router - I am now getting Amazon Prime through my tv set via Vodafone, so the remote would not work whilst the settings were for the Plusnet router. The problem has now been sorted out now - please, see what I posted a couple of minutes ago. (edited)

The remote would not work at all until I followed the instructions in the video. My Amazon Firestick was originally set up to use with the Plusnet router a couple of years ago. I had to change the settings so that the Firestick was set up with the new Vodafone router. Because the remote would not work, I could not change the settings on the tv set (on the Amazon Firestick page). I googled this earlier before finding the video and lots of people had said that they had the same issue with the remote once they changed internet provider - many of them actually thought that they would have to go out and buy a new Firestick as they could not work out how to sort the issue out. Anyway, it's all done now. Perhaps if you watch the video, you will understand better (rather than me trying to explain things) as to what the issue is when you change to a new internet provider.
