Using Mobile's Unlimited Data for PS4 Gaming?

Posted 19th Jan 2020
Hi, I am planning on starting a new sim only contract (EE) that has unlimited 4G data but I was wondering if it is possible to use my data to play online PS4? I would not be downloading, just streaming. It's just that my broadband speed is not so great for gaming and I don't have fibre optic in my area.

Any suggestion, please?

Thank you!

Are you talking if tethering EE sim via a mobile phone to the PS4? I did this with my old 3 sim I had, it was ok, but if playing something like call of duty then you'll soon hate it. It's more down to the latency and the ping. If you can, go 5G that's supposed to be a game changer, excuse the pun.

I don't think gaming will work . Streaming might work (maybe not full hd) must be a different option

Interested why you think this when you don’t know anything about the signal they are receiving?

it is possible and I have done this, you will get lag so not great for things like call of duty. Careful of background/inital downloads will hog the connection.

When I changed broadband providers a couple of years i had a wait for install so I tethered to my iPhone (I was on giff gaff) and had no issues. Worked flawlessly.

Honestly couldn't say for sure but he never had any issues with running out of data and we'd play FIFA Pro Clubs pretty much every evening for 4-5 hours!

Edit: According to Google, 100GB is more than enough.

"Playing a game online will use data. The good news is this won't make a huge dent in your monthly broadband allowance; most modern titles use somewhere between 40MB to 300MB per hour." (edited)

You have had some terrible answers in here from people who know nothing and are guessing.

I do this every week when staying away for work. Tether my PS4 from my phone on 4G EE.

It doesn’t use much data at all, there are no graphics or anything being transmitted or received. The advice you received on this was terrible. 100GB is more than enough!

Latency isn’t going to be as good as a physical connection obviously but it’s better than nothing.

If he can’t get fast fibre broadband I his area I doubt he will be able to get 5g as it’s only in certain cities right now

no 5G here i'm afraid. hm, my brother is on three mobile network and he said it's awful, he lives near me. I can try 4G EE network or something else and see if the latency and ping are any better. not sure how to tell before I order the sim. (edited)

Gaming ; especially 4k . Uses alot of data and requires fast upload/download speeds .

Should really ask about Voda cellular signal as £10/m no contract unlimited data via unmetered Voxi is available to buy and burn if rubbish with no extended commitment.

When you are in a party chat or whatever it will impact your connection too, I'm not clever or clued up enough to explain why, but it does.
Try using the sim in a mobile router. Or put it in an old phone just for tethering purposes and place it some where were reception is stronger.
This is one of the same reasons I left 3 for EE too.

Apologies Arto, I meant to copy in the op (edited)

Multiplayer gaming will be horrible due to large pings.

Depending on your signal, 4G EE works great for online gaming on PS4. My friend used the 100GB sims a few years ago when he had no internet and played FIFA with me just fine. Best to get a free sim first and see what the signal is like, do a speedtest, etc..
