I found a review on this exact laptop which also has a video of it, its in german but in chrome It ask you if you want to translate into english (video is in german)
    computerbild.de/art…tml

It doesn't always have to be a laptop with an Intel processor: The Aldi notebook Medion Akoya E15302 with AMD's Ryzen 5 3500U worked about as fast in the test as notebooks with Intel's Core i5 CPU. The workmanship is good, the equipment too, the option of simply retrofitting a second M.2 SSD is by no means common.

    PROS
    • High pace of work
    • Second M.2 SSD can be easily retrofitted thanks to the maintenance hatch
    • USB-C connection with display port technology
    • Light weight for a 15.6 incher

    CONS
    • Few connections
    • Somewhat short battery life
    • RAM firmly soldered

    Editor's test note

    2.9

    SATISFYING

SSilver case, the lid made of aluminum, the bottom group made of plastic. 15.6-inch display, framed in beautifully narrow borders: The Medion Akoya E15302 notebook , which is available online from Aldi Süd (" Aldi delivers ") from April 29, 2020, looks chic, but is not a standard product, as this detailed test shows.

    Medion Akoya E15302: 1.9 kg

The Medion Akoya E15302 weighs exactly 1,878 grams. This is not extremely easy for a 15.6 incher, but it is also not brutally difficult for daily transport from A to B, even if the power supply increases the total weight by another 383 grams. In addition, the Aldi notebook does not have an excessive number of connections, but all important ones are available. There is an HDMI socket for connecting separate monitors , and a USB-C socket for external SSDs . Printers , on the other hand, connect users to the classic USB Type A socket. There is also a socket for connecting headsets and a memory card reader for small microSD cards .

    40860256-CXqab.jpg

(Right: Switch for deactivating the camera (1) , USB type A socket (2) , headset connection (3) .
    Left: HDMI connection (4) , USB-C socket (5) , memory card reader (6) .
    )

    Medion Akoya E15302: anti-reflective display

Great: The display can be opened with one hand without the floor assembly floating in the air. There are few notebooks balanced in this way. These include Apple's expensive MacBooks . The display with a diagonal of almost 40 centimeters has been framed by the manufacturer Medion on the left, right and top in chic, narrow edges. In the upper margin, however, the webcam required for video calls still fits, which can be deactivated using the switch on the right side of the notebook when not in use. The image quality of the Medion was not completely convincing in the test: photos and films showed it sharply, the maximum brightness (259 candela / m 2) is too small to see anything on the screen outdoors when there is a lot of sunshine. In addition, the Medion shows colors a little pale - but it is anti-reflective. There are only a few reflections on the display.

    Medion Akoya E15302: AMD Ryzen 5 3500U

But what's actually under the hood? If you undo the 13 screws on the underside, you can catch a glimpse of the interior: The drive is the Ryzen 5 3500 , which is located under a black heat sink and heat pipe - a four-core processor that AMD introduced in early 2019. In the CPUThere is also the Vega 8 graphics chip responsible for image reproduction. The processor and graphics chip may store calculated data in an 8 gigabyte working memory. Shortcoming: It is soldered and can therefore not be expanded or exchanged for new modules in the event of a defect. Users store documents, images and programs on an SSD in a large M.2 format chewing gum stick and effectively 477 gigabytes of memory - unfortunately still with SATA instead of a fast PCI Express connection. If the memory is too short: The Medion has a small maintenance hatch on the underside. A second M.2 SSD can be easily inserted thereretrofit (512 GB from 75 euros). By the way: The stripped-down operating system Windows 10 S is preinstalled, but a free update to the full Windows 10 Home worked without any problems in the test.

40860256-5glLZ.jpg(If the memory is not enough: Loosen two screws, open the flap, insert the second M.2 SSD, done)

Medion Akoya E15302: nice and fast

And how fast does the Aldi notebook work? Fast SSD and nimble processor - thanks to this combination, the Medion started in just twelve seconds and offered a very high work speed, even with exhausting image processing with Photoshop. The device disappointed when playing - the graphics chip Vega 8 is too weak for titles like " Battlefield 5 ", so figures only twitch in slow motion over the screen. But if you reduce the detail reproduction and the resolution in the game, you can gamble with the Medion. Because the Vega 8 has a little more steam than, for example, the Intel graphics chip HD Graphics 620.

    40860256-PXiiX.jpg
(Inner life: The AMD CPU Ryzen 5 3500U is hidden under a heat sink (1) , the 8 GB RAM (2) is soldered. The M.2 SSD (3) effectively offers 477 GB of storage, the fully charged battery (4) provides energy for around four hours of work.)

Medion Akoya E15302: A little bit of breath

However, the battery life is only acceptable: in the test, the juice was enough for three and a half hours of work without an outlet, while video playback was almost four hours. It also took a comparatively long time to fill the battery with energy again: three hours and 23 minutes passed before the Medion was charged.

    Medion Akoya E15302: test result

It doesn't always have to be a laptop with an Intel processor: In the test, the Aldi Medion Akoya E15302 with AMD's Ryzen 5 3500U worked roughly as fast as comparable notebooks with Intel's Core i5 CPU. The workmanship is good, the equipment too. The option of simply retrofitting a second M.2 SSD is by no means common. The notebook will be available online from April 29th at sued.aldi-liefert.de .

Would that model have a UK or European / German keyboard layout?

It will be a UK keyboard. Aldi are a very successful global retailer. They wouldn't make such an elementary mistake as to try & flog German keyboards to us Brits.

That said, IF it came with a Qwertz keyboard, you can simply return it free, gratis & for nothing. Aldi's returns policy for electrical goods is just brilliant! This is what they say upfront...

    • Returns
    • While we hope you'll be happy with your order, you can return it to us free of charge.

Also Aldi's 3 year warranty is top notch. I had a screen backlight fail on my first Medion laptop just before the warranty expired. I rang Aldi, they sent me a box, organised a date to pick it up, took it to Germany, fixed it & couriered it back a couple of weeks later.

    Hope that helps... (edited)

These CPUs run hot so don’t expect a long lasting product.

It's hard to say. You missed a stonking deal posted here a month or so ago for the newer Ryzen 5, 4000 series. This laptop is Ryzen 5, 3000 series so I wouldn't purchase this laptop.

The best advice I can give you is to save "laptop" or "gaming laptop" as a keyword alert here on hotukdeals and read the comments. You'll be able to discern by the enthusiast's comments whether it's a good deal or not. Laptops can be expensive, but if you're patient, good deals will come along and you'll be prepared to take advantage. The longer you wait, maybe the more you can put towards it.

One thing I will say (from my own experience), the feeling of having a capable laptop is amazing. I can only imagine what it'd be like to have that feeling as a kid. But when you get a laptop that just "does the job", the laptop can feel really underwhelming, which defeats the purpose. You want something that can do not only what you want it to do, but more. Because believe me, your son will want it to do more than just minecraft as time goes on. I'm not sure if this was the response you were after (with the myriad of choice out there, giving you a link to a random laptop with an average price isn't good advice to give imo), but I hope it helps build some perspective from a purchasing angle. Again, from experience, and I'm sure you can agree, laptop hunting can be very overwhelming! (edited)

Unfortunately memory is soldered and can't be expanded

If this had 16GB RAM it would be a brilliant deal. Windows 10 has become quite bloated and I easily push near to 8gb ram usage. Microsoft Teams (essential to the new normal now) sucks up a lot of ram too.

This might be good for light users but think the fixed 8GB ram will be the limitation eventually. (edited)

That’s how Aldi works. The specialbuys are available to preorder a week before becoming officially available. I find any decent stuff goes in the first few days of the pre-order. Not sure if this will be available in store but would rather buy online and wait a week or two for delivery than go to my local store right now.

I think it means same, the difference is just the geographical use. I am from Slovakia and we use word "notebook" instead of "laptop". Because Aldi is a german company, they use "notebook" as well O presume. The word "notebook" in countries like Germany and Slovakia (definitely in Slovakia) does not have same mean as in UK. It has just been used as a term for small portable computer.

So of somebody from foreign country ask you about notebook he probably means laptop (not the notepad) (edited)

Your statutory rights have no expiration in the UK, I'm not sure where you …Your statutory rights have no expiration in the UK, I'm not sure where you get the 1 year "standard" from. The law just mentions "reasonable expectation" of the lifetime and durability of a product, it does not break down into specific product types, such as "laptops", or even electricals. However, getting the vendor to honour your statutory rights is another matter, of course, the law is notoriously subjective -it often boils down to how much of a pain in the arse you are prepared to be. But then, that's all true of voluntary warranties too, in my experience.I hear Aldi have a no quibble policy on returns, and I have to admit, that kind of "customer is always right" attitude of the vendor/manufacturer is often much more important (and often all too rare) than these arbitrary warranty numbers (which are often just marketing). In that respect, Aldi probably are a good choice of vendor, which is what you're saying I think On the flip side of that is that you'll get very little useful support out of them other than "we can give your money back, if you want?" which is a bit overkill for when there's just, say, a case screw missing.Anyway, I'm not sure I'd ever go back to a plastic cased laptop (the lower half of the Medion is ABS), they're just sooooo much more fragile and you're unlikely to get a vendor to accept cracks & chips under statutory rights or a warranty, frankly.

Without reading most of what you wrote... For the average consumer, them saying "3 year warranty" just makes things easier. And that's a good thing.

Can't see why these deals seem to come down to gaming and settings and there's something better down the road, for many they want a laptop for internet, zoom calls, emails, youtube and general computing needs, a bit of photo editing maybe. It's not a gaming machine it's a general purpose lappy for exactly what you are doing now, the internet and it comes with 3 years guarantee. What's not to like.

If you want a gaming laptop pony up £800 and go buy one this deal isn't for you.

I think you probably should qualify this comment by specifying what you mean by “game”. If you mean AAA titles from this/recent years then you are right, they either won’t play or will have a very low frame rate.

However thousands of older / less demanding 3D games plus almost anything 2D and emulators of most older systems will play just peachy.

The main issue actually, which you’ve not mentioned, but has been said already on the thread, is that the graphics will be hindered by the 1x8gb (vs 2x4tb which would be a lot quicker) - odd decision by Medion to do it like this but I guess laptops always have a compromise unless they are £1000s!

That said, if I look back at what I've spent on gaming laptops it's gone from £299 (2009) to £329 (2011) to £560 (2015) to £719 (2018). TBF, with each 'bump' you get 'more stuff'; more memory, more storage, IPS screens, SSDs so I can't complain. I'm hoping to keep my next laptop (very likely the all AMD Dell G5 SE) below £800 but that might well be overambitious. I suspect when AMD bring forth their Ryzen 3 APUs for laptops (next year??), we might find that the Navi integrated graphics are 'good enough' for a lot of 1080p gaming. Once you lose that dedicated GPU, I expect prices to drop back below £600... but until then... it's tricky.

Why not get a desktop in which you can upgrade components instead of buying so many machines?

    My twopenneth worth...

I bought my current Medion laptop from Argos. The laptop itself had a 2 year warranty. On the other hand, Argos only provided a ONE year warranty. Presumably if my laptop died after 12 months & a day, I would need to seek a repair directly from Medion which may not be that easy.

However with this laptop, the retailer, Aldi, provides the 3 year warranty. They assume the responsibility of getting Medion to fix any faults. It's a far better way of doing things than Argos's.

BTW, my Medion X6603 had been fault free since I bought it in Jan 2018. Wifey's Medion E4213, bought in June 2016, is also still fully functional. Even my Medion P6620 that I bought in 2009 still works & comes in handy if I need to fire up Lotus 123! People who complain about plastic laptops need to learn how to stop dropping them! (edited)

Shows how much we're being fleeced, still. 4000 series Ryzen is out there now. This 3000 series Ryz laptop should be much cheaper than it is.
