The PS5 (or PlayStation 5) is the next-generation PlayStation console, with a release date confirmed for late 2020. Sony hasn't revealed what the PS5 looks like or what it costs yet, but we're on the brink of a June 11 PS5 games reveal event called the Future of Gaming, which will finally reveal what we'll be playing on the console from launch and beyond.

Sony has previously revealed the DualSense PS5 controller, which includes a slew of impressive-sounding features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and a built-in mic. What really stands out about the DualSense controller, though, is its radically different look and space-age black-and-white color scheme, which suggests the PS5 design have a similar look – and will mark a significant departure from its predecessors.

Just as important as the DualSense Controller are the PS5 specs, discussed in detail at Sony's March reveal event. Lead system architect Mark Cerny provided us with a deep dive into the PS5's system architecture, revealing the technical inner workings of the PS5. We'll cover them in more detail down below, but the short of it is that the PS5 is rocking an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom RDNA 2 AMD GPU that puts out 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power.

When it comes to other PS5 features, we know the next-gen console will have ray-tracing, a super-fast SSD, a built-in 4K Blu-ray player and will be backwards compatible with a huge swathe of the PS4's game catalogue. Hey, it may even have voice assistant capabilities to tell you how long it will take to beat levels. So far, the PS5 is living up to the hype, but it's the games that'll make all the difference.

Want all the juicy details? Here's everything we know about the PS5 so far – and what we hope will be revealed the closer we get to launch.

It shouldn't be a means to justify the cost. Those apple people are nuts. I've always said a phone should never cost more than the latest console.

Worth pointing out the 1TB version also says £599.

But didn't they already announce it would be 825GB? Can't see them listing that as 1TB.

And what is this listing about amazon.co.uk/202…B8/
Xbox Series X game for PS5!

The consoles parts are £450 according to leaks. then you have R&D, marketing, and shipping and other random stuff that add £. Sony will probably be breaking even even at £600 here

The PS3 used up all the profits from the PS2 I believe. It was a disaster for Sony.

The PS4 made a profit at launch as soon as you bought a game I think.

SSD makes no difference to framerate performance or graphics quality.Just …SSD makes no difference to framerate performance or graphics quality.Just load times.A slower HDD will not prohibit the use of higher quality textures, it will just take the machine longer to load them into RAM.

Nope, that's wrong. You're missing the point. This is logic from 10 years ago - games now stream assets on the fly, they don't simply load the entire level into RAM for e.g. an open world game. It's not possible.

The quicker you can load the textures into RAM, the less you need to worry about ensuring you have distant textures/assets in that RAM.

To give an analogy - let's say I play a game that has a number of adjacent villages. I'm in village 1. At any one time I can go north/south/east/west and the game has no way to predict this. So in the space of, say, 30 seconds, it could need to load the textures/assets for village 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.

If it can't predict where I'm going, it needs to be able to load ALL of those villages at any one time. On a slow drive, this means all the villages need to be in RAM all at once, so the game can render them when needed. If I have 16GB of RAM and 5 villages, that leaves 3GB or so for each village. That's my budget for textures, assets etc.

Let's now say I have a fast SSD. If the game knows it can pull the data for each village so fast (x100) it doesn't have to worry about having all the villages in RAM. It can fetch the data as needed. That means I potentially have that whole 16GB for each individual village. Think on that. More RAM available means massively bigger, more details textures, more assets, further LODs etc.

Faster I/O speeds, used correctly, is a potential game changer. (edited)

    Rubbish.

Phones are used daily every hour. They are used for emails, video calls, news, multiple applications, have a screen and several cameras built in.

The tech you get in a phone is insane especially given how small they are.

Again poor people will always complain at prices even when reasonable.

£600 for a console is nothing. Try buying a gaming pc right now a gpu alone like the 2070 super is £600.

Consoles are always ridiculous value for money

Ah such is life hey, growing up I was really passionate about gaming but coming from a working class low income household meant that I I couldn't buy a console outright. I would save up what little money I had, do leaftlet runs and deliver newspapers to buy the ps2 with only a couple of games. Now that I have the money and the time, I just lack the passion netflix etc just makes it too easy to pass time. I have an xbox one x and a gaming pc but probs use it for gaming like 2 hours a month and yet I will probs buy the new consoles

£50 you say? 25% more powerful you say? No exclusives lined for PS5 you say?

I'm not sure why this is always brought up. You can spend £3000 on a pc. Of course a £500 console won't compete with that but then how many pc users have gaming PCs that are £3000 or even £1500. Thats like saying your Ferrari Enzo can beat my Ford Fiesta. It's a pointless argument.
