Which Console to buy?

Posted 11th Jul 2020
My son has been begging for a console for a while now, and I’ve finally gave in...
So now I have to decide which one to buy, either PS4 or Xbox 1 S/X?

OR

should I just wait till the new consoles(I believe ps5 and x series ) get released ?

As for a PlayStation or Xbox it’s best to just go with whatever your friends have if you are wanting to play online with them.

The xbox s/x is going to be supported for 1 year after the series x comes out. Unless your child has a 4k tv.the s is the way to go. You Can pick a cheap used one up for under £100. Then if your child enjoys it. Can trade it in for the new console later on with out losing to much money on it.

This. There's nothing worse in the playground than having the wrong console. His friends will be saying 'ooh, I just got The Last Of Us and it's brilliant', and your kid will be sat in a corner feeling left out because you got him an Xbox. Or if you buy him a PS4 and they're talking about the latest Forza. I should know, I bought an Atari ST back in the day... all the cool kids got Amiga's.

The same applies to versions, he's not going to feel very inclusive when he's the only person with a PS5. It might be the latest and greatest, but it's not the same as everyone else.

If all that fails, I'd say PS4 as it's easier/cheaper to build up a decent collection of games. Having said that, ra786 is correct, prices seem a bit high at the moment. I'd say wait for a while until things calm down.

How old is your son? Is he not asking for a specific console? Why no love for the Nintendo Switch?

Is it a special occasion (birthday, Christmas) or just a general purchase?

Unpopular opinion, but this is the absolute worst time this entire console generation to buy one. Prices have been artificially inflated. Even used consoles are selling for ridiculous amounts. And buying new, you’re looking at often paying more than rrp. No offers anywhere.

It might be better to wait for the new consoles. Even if they’re more expensive, they will be backwards/forwards compatible and you won’t have to worry about getting the latest thing for another 7 years.

If you feel that the new ones are too expensive, the current ones should start to come back down in price by then. Not long left until they’re out now.

Oh, I can just see the conversation now.....

"Hi son, you know I finally gave in to your pleading and agreed to buy you a console? Well, I consulted the very sage people at HUKD and they advised me to wait for the new ones to come out. Still, only three months to wait until release and then you can have a nice, shiny new one for Christmas - as long as they don't sell out or suffer stupid price premiums from unscrupulous sellers on ebay!"

Lesson Learnt the hard way and I echo the opinion offered by the other posters.

Find out what console his mates have.

    Get the same one.

You will be the best parent ever if you do this, but the worst parent ever (despite spending a lot of money) if you don't

This, the price of consoles at the moment are high due to the demand during Covid. If you can wait till October/ November you’ll only end up paying another £200 and get a console at the start of its lifecycle instead of one at the end.

Or buy a switch, they don’t have any plans to release a new console at the moment. (edited)

I would wait to get the new consoles as the PS4 and Xbox One are coming to the end of their life cycles.

The best solution is to pre order a PS5, pre orders should open up before long, the PS5 will play all PS4 games anyway. I'd stay away from XBox as he most likely has more friends on PS to play with online, my sons never use the XBox as none of their friends have one. I wouldn't go with series X as it's almost certain Sony are only going to open the gap even wider next gen.

Having been an Xbox gamer since 2005 I will be buying a next gen Xbox.

I also have a PS4 so may get the next gen PS in the future.

I would wait and speak to your son to see which he would rather have at the end of the year.

I do agree with those points however PlayStation has the games. Loads more exclusive games.

Like others have mentioned. If he has friends he wants to play online with then that's the console you should get.

Personally, now I avoid buying consoles at launch and wait for a decent price drop (usually about 3 years in when Slim models come out). My 1TB PS4 was £180 and I got my Xbox One for £130.

Unfortunately at the moment there's no brilliant prices on either consoles.

Xbox Game Pass is pretty brilliant. Like Netflix but for games, every Microsoft made game is on there on day of release.
If you end up getting a Xbox, buy 3 years of Live Gold and when you try Game Pass Ultimate it will upgrade your existing Gold to Game Pass Ultimate.

If you end up with PS4, PS+ subscriptions are cheapest during Days Of Play which is the first week of June, so that's the best time to buy that.

Yeah it does but we have yet to see these new games. They need to show them at the July event. Sony still have more exclusives at this moment in time.

Sony have about 13 and Xbox about 15
but of those Studios output Sony's has been far superior to those of Xbox,

As for Studio Consolidations or Closures, Microsoft has closed or lost an equal amount of Studios in about that amount of time too.

I hope Xbox can finally sort out it's studio situation but does buying Studios end up with quality games?

2009 Ensemble Studios closed, then you have BigPark and the other Kinect focused studios that were all consolidated into Microsoft. Circa 2014 they shutdown Microsoft Studios Victoria. They also merged Soho Studios into LIFT London and then removed LIFT London from Microsoft Games. There's also Team Dakota who were consolidated after the discontinuation of Project Spark.
So that's at least another 5 if you treat all the Kinect focused studios as 1 entity.

Games with online multiplayer like Halo are easily served by 3rd party multi platform titles like BF, CoD etc and if you have VR you've got experiences like Bravo Team and Firewall.
As for variety you have the Playlink games like, Singstar, Frantics, That's You, Knowledge Is Power, etc, platform games like Gravity Rush and Tearaway, creative games like Little Big Planet 3 and Dreams. And there's also WipEout : Omega Collection which doesn't really have a Xbox equivalent.

I love Game Pass but it's not usually the Microsoft titles I'm gravitating towards.

The issue I have with getting a ps5 straight away when it is released is that I can guarantee within about 6 months or a year a new and improved slimmer version will come out
