Those who will be affected by ULEZ expansion, what do you plan on doing?

I've got a diesel car which isn't compliant and I travel to visit a relative that will soon sit on the border of the ULEZ expansion.

Looked at petrol, hyrbid and EV but can't afford them to be honest. A used petrol would probably be my best bet but prices are so high.

My parents currently live with me until they get they're own place and they are on universal credit and one of them on higher allowance of PIP, I think there's a scheme that allows extension and another that pays £2000 for scrapping. Is this something I can use?

thanks.

Well you have limited options. You said you can't afford to upgrade. Parking nearby and taking public transport/walking isn't an option. Paying as and when you need it is not an option for you either.

You have answered your own question.

Is this what you plan on doing?

    I have a ULEZ-compliant car.

Old fashioned solution. Drive to somewhere close and walk. That’s my plan. The exercise is good for me and for all my health issues.

Pay the £12.50 charge as and when you need to visit.

Simple. I pay the charge and pass it straight on to my customer. (Electrician)

That's probably not an option unfortunately.

You state PIP, is any part of it mobility as can you get free car tax.
My car is regestered as disabled and gets free car tax, Im lucky its a 2016 euro 6 diesel so not an issue.
If you drive your parents around and could get the free raod tax you could keep you car for 4 more year.

    Read this,

    Vehicles for disabled people
    • Keepers of vehicles registered with a 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicles' tax class will benefit from a grace period after the ULEZ starts. They'll be exempt from the ULEZ charge until 26 October 2025 as long as their vehicle doesn't change tax class. (Vehicles operated by or on behalf of TfL will not benefit from this grace period.) Read the eligibility criteria for the disabled tax class exemption on Gov.uk
    • If your UK-registered vehicle is in this category, you don't need to register with us to get the exemption. If your 'disabled' vehicle is registered outside the UK, you are also exempt from ULEZ during the grace period, but will need to register with us.
    • Blue Badge holders need to pay the charge unless their vehicle meets the ULEZ emission standards or is registered with the DVLA with a 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicle' tax class
    • From 27 October 2025 vehicles with 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicles' tax class that do not meet the ULEZ emission standards will be liable for the daily ULEZ charge.

Only if your parents are insured to drive on your vehicle.

I note they are only with you temporarily...whilst you meet the "living together" condition, you must prove it. The person on UC must have a document showing their address is the same as that on your V5c

Perhaps it's better if I rephrase.
The person claiming on the scrappage scheme must be on UC and must be insured to drive the car. they do not have to be the registered keeper of the car but they must be living at the same address that the V5c is registered at, and prove this. (edited)

Do you know if I can use this scheme until I am able to find a replacement and then use the scrappage scheme?

I'm sure they can scrap that scheme anytime but haven't looked into it.

Keep it simple, If your parent gets free car tax with mobility part of pip get tax and then do nothing for 4 years.
I know nothing about scrappage scheme, sorry.
If they get it they should have a bit of paper that reads.
    DWP etc on top.
Certificate of entitlement to PIP payment serial number XXXXXXX.
If they have this letter, take a photo copy of it and your log book and insurance cert to post office.
Get tax and log book changed to disabled and your all done.
No charge for ULEZ for 4 years as long as you get disabled car tax.

If the op parks outside someone else’s house they won’t be happy at all but you have made me think that it’s gonna cause a headache for everyone in that area as locals may request permit holders area now.
    Shame about this ulez
Where I am, the city’s such as Leeds and Bradford ulez only applies to taxis, trucks and buses, not private owned . Same with Manchester
