Why do you need to 'meditate'? Most folks into it now are trying to get peace from that insane voice in the head (the one that doesn't shut up when you want to sleep, or kicks off when you wake in the night). That 'voice' in your head is the thing that is affected by (and reacts to) your perceptions of the outside world (what the media feed you, colleagues, family etc bombard you with in life). It loves 'drama', 'comparison', 'reaction', 'outrage' , 'making others ,the other' etc. Your insane voice is interacting/resonating with other folk's insane head voice.

Heres the trick, observe (witness) that voice in your head (try it for a few seconds or minutes, close your eyes and 'observe' that head voice)...the real 'you' is the one in the background witnessing that mad voice. Most people never realise that they aren't that voice, but are actually the presence in the background (which over time comes to the foreground).

Same goes for this 'mindFULLness' stuff, its a big mistranslation. The goal of meditiation is to be mindLESS, i.e. not associated with the mind (that head voice...the Ego)

The more you witness that voice, the weaker it becomes and the more peaceful you'll become. Its completely free to do and isn't hard (but can be met with internal resistance as you've rumbled the 'ego'). Eckhaart Tolle explains it in simple terms in his books and his videos are free on youtube. If a meditation practice does not tell you about the 'ego' (and how to diminish it/ see it for what it is ) you will never get peace, no matter how many hours you meditate, but you will be a good meditation repeat customer.

It's a really odd use of language. Its like when people tell you 'dont' worry...the first thing you'll do then is 'worry'. Same with mindfulness...you are telling your mind to be full....so that's what you'll get. Hence a repeat customer .

The ego is like sitting on a spike ..and your pain in A$$ comes from that..breathwork, meditation etc is like a pain killer for temporary relief....but if you want to be healed long term then take away the spike (the ego).

I used to think it was hogwash .. read the tolle stuff a few times and other books/podcasts etc and didn't get it. But eventually I got it. Don't give up on seeing the ego for what it is.

Headspace at least teaches about ego, I don't know about this app

Meditation isn't a temporary salve, it's mental training
Recognising the ego and ones response and watching it as an impartial, not judgemental observer
They give the example of watching traffic - ones thoughts - rather than being stuck in the traffic with all the emotion

You're reading into the components of the word too literally. A bit like Rastafari insisting on using overstand instead of understand
Mindfulness doesn't mean a full mind
    It means awareness
    Are you emptying your mind?
Or are you gaining control of your thoughts and ego, through non judgemental awareness
Which perhaps isn't the absence of thought - emptiness - but a full command of ones mind -awareness and agency

Besides, eastern philosophy such as Taoism would have something to say about being full through being empty, and empty through being full

So mindfulness empties ones mind of the harmful ego driven thoughts by filling it with oneself - like pouring clear, clean water into a vessel so the crap floating around in it turbulenty is displaced and goes away (edited)

I don’t think mindLESS makes sense
To me that conotates being a mindless zombie
    Stuck in your head, daydreaming
Like phone zombies not looking where they're going

The point is to be present

Fully present and aware and thoughtful about what you're doing, your body, your environment.

So when you mindfully chop vegetables you're fully present, your mind is full only of the task at hand - controlling the knife, the touch and feel, the sound it makes, etc.

If you do that mindlessly you're doing it on auto pilot, not present in the chopping but instead thinking your knife isn't that good and you should buy a new one (ego) or something completely unrelated

Meditation teaches you to be present and pull yourself back to the present if your thoughts go astray

So I think the Taoism like being empty by being full, and being full by being empty works

You'te full of the present and empty of worry, ego, thoughts of the future and past. Simply existing in the now (edited)

It is simple, but its not a do this and everything is fixed path. Try …It is simple, but its not a do this and everything is fixed path. Try this, close your eyes and sit somewhere (preferably outdoors or by a window). Then just listen and whatever you experience, don't label it (i,e, bird song)...just listen. The mind will quieten, and then you'll suddenly start to hear other stuff (life everywhere, distant sounds). You'll experience this 'aliveness' and connection with those things. Once again its something that can't be explained in words..but it will open you up to being conscious . You can do the same with your eyes... sit in front of a 'tree' or a 'flower' and just observe it without labelling what you see. You'll then get 'space' in your head. You'll lose track of time and just be in the moment."no psychotherapy industry, nobody would ever drink, take drugs, exercise excessively, feel damaged by trauma, " This stuff is intrinsically related to your ego. You might not like to hear this, but the ego, your sense of self likes things like trauma, the story's of past harms done to keep itself going (it loves being the victim, telling you you've been wronged etc). In the book ' A new earth' Tolle goes through all these things. Another person who talks about it is Dr Gabor Mate. This world feeds/develops your 'false' self, it does not encourage you to find your true self. As then you'll be content with what you have (won't want to buy the next new thing or keep up with the jones ), what life throws at you (you'll treat good and bad alike as a fleeting experience) and not putting up with nonsense (if people are unconscious towards you, you don't take it personally) .

All I would hear is my tinnitus!

Thank you for taking the time for your gentle, informative response. Having achieved total ego dissolution on multiple occasions I can certainly get your drift.

Gabor Mate is an interesting character.

    Shalom, Salaam, Namaste, as appropriate.

+1 I read The power of now, but maybe because I am not much of a book reader I actually got more from Eckhart's video lectures, although it is far from a lecture, really like the way he is softly spoken and what he has to say comes across in an easy way to digest and understand then put into practise.

Quite often I find myself thinking about 'stuff' and actually remind myself 'be present Jung' and if stressed a bit or experiencing negative emotions for ex, running late and traffic lights change to red as approaching, or someone in front is driving well below the limit on a long safe road I do get a little peed off from my reactive mind like a knee jerk response from conditioning, or in a queue at the supermarket waiting for a lotto ticket and the person at the front is taking an age trying to pay with their phone that isn't working and trying a card that has expired and then digs around for change etc, then the next person spends and age deciding which scratch cards to buy etc, it winds me up a little.

Then I catch myself and say to myself relax, getting wound up will not make getting served any quicker, just be at peace with it, and stay present, pay attention to my breathing. It really does work, but I still find it hard to maintain, because of conditioning like you say.

We all have to start somewhere, and I know in a few more years I will have a much more disciplined mind.
I have a lot of admiration toward people that do remain in a peaceful state under trying conditions.
Also I have noticed some people seem to thrive on getting/causing and argument, it's like they feed off that negative energy from annoying people or starting something, making mountains out of mole hills and generally have a 'atmosphere' around them.

lol, please don't think I am saying this to you because you did not know, its just a reply and agreement with you but for the benefit of others that read it, I also enjoyed reading what you said

Nice idea but if it were that simple then there would be no psychotherapy industry, nobody would ever drink, take drugs, exercise excessively, feel damaged by trauma, the list is endless.

Genuinely delighted if you have found it that simple but it will never be that straight forward for the majority and to some degree, although well intended, comments like this can make others feel lesser,,,,,,

Simply existing in the now

The mindless = zombie state is a western thing (meme). Its a problem of language really. English isn't the best language for conveying meanings. By mindless, I'm going on about as you state being present, presense doesn't come from the mind, its from the consciousness. Lots of traditions talk about duality (mind and consciousness ) , the aim of life is to break the duality.

A good example is the 'flow' state, when you excel at your work and you aren't really thinking about it.

I find it good to have such discussions with folks, however unless you experience it you'll never know it (and words are rubbish at explaining the experience).

Nice idea but if it were that simple then there would be no psychotherapy …Nice idea but if it were that simple then there would be no psychotherapy industry, nobody would ever drink, take drugs, exercise excessively, feel damaged by trauma, the list is endless.Genuinely delighted if you have found it that simple but it will never be that straight forward for the majority and to some degree, although well intended, comments like this can make others feel lesser,,,,,,

It is simple, but its not a do this and everything is fixed path.

You'll lose track of time and just be in the moment.

"no psychotherapy industry, nobody would ever drink, take drugs, exercise excessively, feel damaged by trauma, " This stuff is intrinsically related to your ego.
