PS5 stopped reading games - sony saying out of warranty

Hi,

My ps5 has stopped reading my games and displays 'unreadable disc'.
Contacted sony for repair and have been told its out of warranty and I need to pay £240. I bought it at end of November 2020 from Currys. Any advice would be much appreciated?

Most frustratingly it started not reading discs in November 2021 but I didn't contact sony straight away.

Did you take out coverplan? Or have you been sent a letter offering you extended warranty?

Take out the warranty and wait a month or two and claim on it. If you go back to the store, I can 100% guarantee you will be messed around and fobbed off.

I know a lot of people will disagree with this and say it's wrong, immoral or illegal. But we the consumer and normal everyday working folk are constantly being ripped off, lied to and made to pay for everything. Whilst big companies and corporation's make fortune's, avoid taxes, and pay huge bonuses and dividends, along with our lying politicians. (edited)

My 2 year old LG tv from Currys is getting picked up tomorrow to get fixed, phoned LG first they said out of warranty and to contact currys. Phoned currys told them what LG said and mentioned comsumer law, went away for a few minutes then came back and said no problem we will arrange pick up, I thought I might have to pay a £95 deposit (get it back once proved tv was faulty) but didn't. Phone currys tell them you phoned Sony and tell them they said it was upto to you to fix it and mention consumer law, I don't think you will have a problem.

Pre-armed with a reasonable perception of product life expectancy had it not busted prematurely, the two typical questions to be presented to any merchant that has sold you prematurely failed equipment are:

Please state now how you intend to discharge your obligations related to this prematurely-failed product indicating inadequate quality and durability as otherwise required by CRA 2015.
And after the usual "nothing to do with us" response, ask:
Please state your exemption to CRA 2015.
(where the answer is self-incriminating for a merchant as no merchant is exempt from CRA 2015).

Repeat the above two questions until either the merchant offers a satisfactory solution or until there is sufficient merchant ignorance / arrogance to enjoy initiating legal options.

A savvy merchant may request that you first confirm the fault by obtaining a written report from a credible repair organisation.
This request is an interpretation of CRA 2015 and not unreasonable.
You may state that you accept this request on the express understanding that the merchant will cover the cost of the report when the report confirms the fault - this usually triggers the most assertive "go away" response from the merchant, but equally: it will produce the most beneficial outcome when (if?) the report confirms the fault.

When the fault is confirmed the outcome will either be all costs of repair covered by the merchant, or part cost of either repair or compensation of purchase price pro-rata to the reasonable expected lifetime of the otherwise not prematurely-busted kit,
or further futile responsibility denial by merchant requiring further enforcement such as S75 (if appropriate) or MCOL.

The "Satisfactory Quality" and "durability" requirement of CRA 2015 is stated at 9 > 3c at Gov legislation page

Currys will try to fob you off.

They will probably try to get you to contact sony.

The law is very clear, you purchased the item from currys so currys (not sony) is responsible for resolving this.

Suggest that you look at the moneysavingexpert guide

It’s either faulty on arrival, or the user has mistreated/poorly maintained the console in some way to cause the defect.I’ve been buying consoles for 31 years and only 1 has been defective, the og PS2, which was faulty on arrival. No other console has broken because I take care of them. These people you see online, usually Americans, who go through 5 consoles per generation are obviously mistreating their machines. CEX employees always compliment by stuff and say most people bring in garbage

I'm the same - CEX have almost always graded phones I trade in as "A" despite being daily drivers for a couple of years.

There is some history of some consoles being prone to fail however - XBox 360 Red Ring of Death, and the PS3 with it's yellow light for example.

Currys are stating that they cant do anything for me. Saying there is no action on their side.
They are saying that only time the customer can claim under consumer rights act is if it was the second time it went faulty and was outside of warranty.
I kept stating this isn't correct.
Curry's say there is nothing further they can do.
I said so how do I take this forward, I have to take you to small claims court? The reply was 'if that's what you have to do.'

Ridiculous! I guess I need to look at section 75 now

    Currys are wrong.

The consumer law says that they have to deal with this.

Perhaps speak to someone in store and ask to speak to a manager. Take their name in case you have to use this information in the future.

However, have you tried a DVD lens cleaner?
We had a problem with a bluray surround system and also had a problem with an old TV/DVD we inheritted from the motherinlaw.

I was skeptical, but a DVD disc cleaner got both working perfectly again.
(There is a tiny brush on the disk and you put a tiny amount of fluid on it before putting it in your drive.)

The disk that we used was similar to this

Thanks. No I haven't tried an actual lens cleaner like that. I have tried blowing in some compressed air but very difficult to get inside ps5 drive without taking it all apart and I don't trust myself to be able to put it back together again :-P.
I read mixed reviews about using a lens cleaner and was worried about causing more damager but for £8 maybe I should try it.

It is very strange it will still read the disc very occasionally, I am most successful first thing in the morning lol.
Could there be any link between reading a disc and the device being cold?

not sure about the time of day affecting it.

The lens cleaner would probably be most effective if you have the playstation horizontal and only put a small amount of fluid on the brushes on the disk. (ie dont soak the brushes, just put enough on to wet them)

It will be interesting to know if this solves your problems, but I was very pleased when this cured my sony bluray surround system.

+1 for lens cleaner, might be a quick solution. You might be able to pick one up in local pound shops, B&M etc

My og PS3, bought in early 2008 with a 2007 SKU is still going fine. Never repaired it. Never opened it up to do anything to it. Simply kept it clean and always treated it with extreme care. I do get the issues with that machine, but I still suspect the majority of people simply mistreated it. It’s a big heavy machine and dust gets in easy, needs regular dusting and care etc. No reason so many should’ve broken so quickly. It was an expensive very well built machine, which cost more than the RRP to build. The fact mine still works fine 15 years after it was built points towards misuse that so many broke. I played thousands of hours of MW2 & 3 on it too, plus thousands of hours of JRPGS. Moved 200 miles to London at one point and back home again with it aswell. (edited)

For those still affected by this the consumer rights act 2015 says it all. Unfortunately you often have to educate retailers about this law because they will fob you off about warranties, in essence you need to be clear of your rights and stick your guns and if all else fails raise a section 75 or take them to court. I would be very surprised if it went any further and even if you did you have the law behind you. I've had my ps5 for just over a year, it's started just losing power for ko reason. They want me to pay £240 for a service which isn't far off purchase price. I'm not gonna be in the habit of paying £240 out each year so the consumer rights are there to protect you and use them to the max even with Sony. It is not reasonable to charge that amount after one year and Sony should be ashamed for only offering a one year warranty on their products.
