Contract ending & porting help

Posted 22nd Feb 2022
Right so my contract with 3 ends at the start of march. I have taken out a new phone contract for 24 months with them but a completely separate deal not like an upgrade or through my current plan or anything. So I would be looking at terminating the plan that is ending. I have the new device & SIM card already activated obviously with new phone number. My understanding is I need to port my current number away eg to a cheap payg SIM then poetbit back to 3 onto the new SIM card.

Do I need to give 3 any notice about cancelling my contract or do I request pac code? I think the official contract end date is 4/3
Will my number be immediately disconnected if I terminate my contract?
How long do I need to wait before porting number to the new 3 SIM card ?

Step by step instructions would help lol thanks in advance

Potential zero-cost route to portout+portin unless ASDA Mobile has recently changed its procedures:

Request free SIM from ASDA Mobile at mobile.asda.com/pay…-go (or likely quicker to buy one in-store at 50p)
Port old 3 number to ASDA Mobile. No charge.
Next day, request PAC from ASDA Mobile, no charge.
Use AM PAC at 3 website port-in page at three.co.uk/sup…est

Unless changed in previous 18months, the ASAP-conversion-to-3-PAYG route typically applied to out-of-contract 3 plans or required physical 30day wait and/or completion of minimum term prior to PAYG conversion.
Would make sense for 3 to show more flexibility to retain its customers, and maybe 3 now does.

do i need to top up the asda sim at all?

Buddy didn't need to topup for portin-portout around Sept 2021, hence the suggestion of AM being the least-cost mechanism route.

Do I need to activate the Asda SIM at all or can I just insert it in my phone them give them the pac code (will need to see how to do this) & wait for my number to be ported over to Asda

Your choice to use PAC or not prior to older contract's natural minimum term end date.

Using a PAC to move to (temporary) new network is effectively giving notice & will terminate the older contract when the port completes.
Any remaining minimum-term balance of older-but-terminated contract will then be calculated by 3, less some small reduction, but consider you will likely have already pre-paid marginally beyond minimum term and if so you will be due a pro-rata refund.
Not clear if 3 still expects customer to actively request any applicable refund.

Subsequent port from temporary new network back to 3 has no impact on older contract, other than 3s app will be completely confused.
No need to contact 3 CS to port old 3 number from temp new network to the new 3 contract; you can use online form:

Thanks Andy. (Sorry thought I said that before). Gave Asda the pac code from 3 on Sunday to transfer my old number.
I think the new Asda SIM has the new never now as didn't have a signal for 1/2 hour but any texts/calls to the number I want to keep are still going to the old 3 SIM card & it is still showing signal. My understanding is it needs to cease in signal to show service from 3 has ceased & contract has been terminated.
I'm confused why both Sims ( old 3 & Asda ) seem to currently have the same number? I can't 100 test this as no credit on my Asda SIM to make an outgoing phone call but my old 3 SIM received messages from the Asda network
    Major confusion!

Did this work in the end? Thinking of doing the same thing (to switch from one Lebara special offer to another, using Asda free PAYG sim)?

There is usually a transition period. Cannot immediately recall if ASDA sends a welcome text when transition is finalised.

Today is 11 March = end of third working day after your indicated port day. Was/is all sorted OK now?
