sorted byFor a lot of people I would agree. However, I have a completely valid use case - my living room. 9 spots, so expensive to kit out with hue but when I moved in the lights were very bright daylight bulbs and lit up the whole room brilliantly - fantastic for working or playing board games and the like, but awful if I'm watching TV or trying to relax. Being able to change both the temperature and the brightness of the bulb makes a massive difference, I can have full, cool bright lighting in the morning and warm dimmed in the evening and it makes such a difference.
However, the real overlooked and killer feature is that I can control all 9 spots individually. I can turn off the one that reflects on the TV, I can make a bright spotlight above the sofa for when my partner is doing some sewing while leaving the rest of the room warm, it's a real game changer and that's the true benefit to these bulbs.
The same can apply to a kitchen as well, I like a bright well lit kitchen when cooking but at night if I am just making a cup of tea I don't want to be blinded, so a warmer pleasant light is much nicer.
What is pointless is the colour. You can get the above by using the white ambience lights that are half the price. That said, sometimes it's nice to put some reds and purples up in the living room but for somewhere like a kitchen the ambience is fine. (edited)
I used to be in a 1-bed flat which was easy to deck out in hue - had three bulbs in the living room, two strips in the kitchen and another couple of bulbs in the bedroom. Moved to a 3-bed semi and I have no chance of going full hue! I've compromised by using some bulbs in floor/table lights and have left things like hallway lights and recessed lights alone. I've got a couple of motion detectors and I always found I could never quite set them up to work when I wanted, so I've given up on those too. If I were replacing my GU10 bulbs, I'd probably go white-only which is only about £13 a bulb on Amazon.

I've gone white ambiance for most things, except my bedroom, living room, and dining room where it's all full colour for entertainment (Spotify sync and mood lighting).
I agree it's expensive, but that's where hotukdeals comes in. For example, you could've gotten 3 white GU10 for £10 total last night!
I normally scour Amazon warehouse (DE is cheap if there are no other sales going on) for deals and it works well.
Motion sensors are ok but you really should use hue labs on them - they make them much more flexible and useful. Here's my favourite formula - labs.meethue.com/for…arm - it enables 3 timeframes as well as dimming instead of turning off when there's no motion.
I'd add that hallway white ambiance + motion sensor is amazing. For recessed / non hue lights you can buy SONOFF switches which you have to wire into the wall, but they allow controlling non hue lights in the hue app!
I have a SONOFF switch controlling my kitchen cabinet lights (which are those flat LEDs that hue don't manufacture). (edited)

You wire them into the wall (they require a neutral), and then add them as a 'light' in Hue. The hue app recognises it and you can then toggle it on and off. The one I've linked above only has on/off, but there are dimming ones too I believe.
Haven't tried with Google Home, but if you add them in the Hue app, Google Home should see it as well? (edited)
Yeah this. I have hue bulbs. I like them, but the prices are nonsense. Almost nobody is going to want two. My kitchen would need 10, so that would be 250 at this price. Even a standard spotlight would be 3 or 4.
I'm not going to mark it cold because maybe it's a cheap price for hue spotlights, but it's still ridiculous. It's not like the hue bulbs are really that special.

Wiz is WiFi and not ZigBee. Buy cheap, buy twice.
To be fair my entire house is hue, including the living room which has strip lights surrounding the entire circumference, and my energy usage is still very low. And let's be honest, if you can 'afford' £50 for two bulbs, the 1p per day excess in your electric bill would be laughable.

The dining room has hue (cheap), but I then realised when I moved in how crazy the bulb costs were....
If I'd moved now I'd "consider" at this price....
Also, putting a motion sensor in walking into the kitchen with time specific brightness is priceless. If you got colour you could set the tone rather than brightness.
OK, true…just did the calculation and an entire 10-array of GU10 bulbs would be £5 per year in electricity charges to power them in the off state. It would therefore be the initial bulb cost that prevents me from getting them as I think I’d need about 20 to do my kitchen/dining room and bedroom.
Great tip on the SONOFF switches, I've been thinking about this just now as I start to deck out a house with Hue. What exact SONOFF switch do I need to buy for non-Hue lights? Does it also work with Google Home?
You are making me want to spend £££ buying them now!!!!
Look at the picture I don't understand how are they worth it unless you want to end up in the rainbow room which a lot of us certainly would avoid.
