What to replace Sky with ??

God day people, I have had sky for many years and am not really up on knowing which alternatives are the ones to look at. My sky has just gone up from £31 to £47 per mnth with an offer to reduce to £40, being a pensioner that is beyond my scope, so any help in deciding what to use in the future will be greatly appreciated.

IPTV is a waste of time as it's a closed shop. Nobody ever points you towards a reliable service but are happy to brag they've got it.

I personally would just look at your current series links and see what you actually watch. If they're all on the Free to Air channels then get yourself a recordable freesat box.

You can get cheap Netflix and Prime and top that up with free TV apps like Pluto TV as well. Britbox is there if you like watching UK TV shows and all of them will be significantly cheaper than a Sky subscription.

I've never seen anyone brag about their IPTV and it most definitely isn't a waste of time.

Let us all know the things/channels you would miss if you were to cancel Sky and then I'm sure there will be alternatives others will suggest.

Most of the newer series on sky do not interest me, especially the the reality type ones, they are just mostly brain numbing trash to me, ( yes I am over pension age but still have a brain that works ), I'm thinking that 2/3 other providers will give me most or all of want I want and will be half the cost, I just need some suggestions for the best/better ones as I am not up to speed with these. Does anyone else in your family have sky ? If so get them to set you up a sky go username and password , then you can watch it on your laptop or pc and if your laptop has a hdmi , then hook it upto the tv that way . Can even put it through a games console if you have one . Plex even has sky go in it now so could even use it that way .

I think the attraction is that it's supposed to give you stable, full HD access to "thousands" of channels around the world. If you try any of the 'free' streaming sites, they're loaded with ads and are often flaky because so many people are using them.

So you could watch Friends on Comedy Central US instead of Comedy Central UK I suppose

Its in the streaming services. I clicked it in that but don't think it's done anything. That was on my Lg CX .

What extras do you pay for? Sports Channels, film channels, extra entertainment channels?

If you don't record programmes. You could look at nowtv.com/ Sometimes promotions are put on here. Do a free trial and cancel saying it is too expensive and it may give you an offer.
  14. guilbert53's avatar
It depends what channels you watch.

Also I assume you already have Broadband / Phone line

    But some alternative platforms are:

Virgin (can offer TV, Broadband, Phone, Mobile but you don't need to take them all of course)

BT (also offer TV, Broadband, Phone, Mobile)

Now TV (also run by Sky) - TV streaming service

Freeview (built in to many TVs), also Freesat as you already have a dish (though it may need changing to get Freesat).

Also if you have a Smart TV you can register for various apps / streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and so on

You can search the internet for "Alternatives to Sky TV" and you get a number of web sites.

Here is one web site as an example but there are loads of others (this web site below is a little out of date but not by that much)

    projectfinanciallyfree.com/che…tv/
    .
P.S. I have Sky and went on the Sky web site and chose the "I want to leave Sky" button and went in to the "chat" option. This allowed me to "chat" to a Sky person and after a bit of haggling I managed to get about £30 off my monthly Sky bill (which I admit was higher than yours as I have Sports, Cinema, Netflix etc).

Try the "chat" option as Sky are loath to lose customers so you could use the "poor pensioner" route to see if they give you more off your bill. (edited)

I use Netlfix and Nowtv entertainment, Everything else has its own app pretty much iplayer, all4 etc on smart tvs (all the apps have plenty of older programmes and watch when you want). Sky just seems to be them all collected together on one programing guide for ease of use. (edited)

Get a couple of firesticks and add cinema app, free movies and tv programs.. no more monthly bills.

or get a couple of freesat boxes, you just switch out with sky box and get all the free channels.. (edited)

May be worth looking at discovery plus as a subscription for documentaries though I have no experience of it.

Older series maybe something like Britbox.

Otherwise I would look at Netflix and/or Disney Plus as they have some good documentaries on there.

You may even get all of the above for what Sky was quoting

Cancel your sky then wait for a call back from the win back team they can offer more discount than the retentions team.

Then also look at getting the packages you only need. If your only watching stuff that you can get on freeview. Save your money and go for sky's cheapest package that way you can still record if that is what you are used to.

    Supplement your missing channels with:
    Netflix (via Turkey)
    Amazon Prime Video
BT Sport / Britbox (Free with some EE contracts)
Disney+ also includes Nat Geo documentaries (Free with some O2 contracts)
    NowTV (always have good offers)
    Pluto (Free with ads)
    IMDb (Free with ads)

Sky movies isn't great in my opinion and lot if stuff can be watched on other services.

The hardest part is probably changing your viewing habits. I found a fire stick is the cheapest and best option to have most services in one place. (edited)

Cancel Sky and wait a week or so and they'll start to bombard you with letters and emails with offers asking you to come back.
I genuinely wanted to leave sky and eventually had to warn them I'll be raising an official complaint if they don't stop pestering me to return.
I've been without Sky for about 7 years now and manage perfectly with a Humax pvr for recording and a cheap Turkey Netflix subscription, I can honestly say I'll never be a Sky customer again.

I left Sky for Nowtv in 2017...

Cinema - Only get a few times a year when they send me an offer, normally £3/5pm

Entertainment - I've never paid more than £4.99pm

Sports - Currently paying £20pm until June, they normally offer a deal before the football season starts.

I have a reliable IPTV subscription. Costs around £5/month.

Your post just proves my point really. Every time I went to a website or forum to try and find recommendations for reliable services, I'd write something along those lines - "Can anyone recommend a decent IPTV service ?".

The responses I'd get would always be along the lines of these ..

    "I have IPTV"
"Yea, I have it as well. I pay X a month"
    "My service is great"

It's ironic that the one time I don't ask for recommendations, on this very thread, is the only time someone has actually reached out to point me towards something I can try.

IPTV is streaming live TV at a fraction of the cost of Sky or Virgin. There will be days when you will have interruptions due to servers being down but if you go with a stable provider then it's worth it. You will also need a good VPN subscription to stop the channels being blocked by your Internet provider.

Fair enough. So mainly for sports? I don't watch any live TV, prefer to wait for an entire series to be finished before starting it.

i find similar when it comes to iptv, lots of people saying they have it but just no idea how to get in or what the good providers are and there's no frame of reference. I guess it makes sense given the service but if anyone can point in the right direction would be appreicated lol
