Supermarket Selling out of date food…

So one of the Cooked Meats that I have bought from the store today was past its use-by date. Almost a week past…. And I noticed it whilst I was about to cook as soon as I arrived at home.

I have been informed by my friend from one of the law schools in London that it is illegal to sell such items. He advised me to reach out to the Supermarket and ask for compensation or contact a council.

May I know where I can stand with the supermarket and if I can be offered compensation from them? The supermarket is well-known.
I do not just want a refund for the meat as it’s not so expensive anyway…

I've got a much better method, I look at the use by dates as I select the items in order to obtain the longest dates possible.

It is a very serious thing for supermarkets to be selling out of date stuff, for obvious reasons.
And you are entitled to compensation for bringing the 'faulty' item back.
Personally I wouldn't ask for that unless they failed to offer a gesture and didn't seem to be taking it seriously.
A replacement and a tenner for your trouble seems appropriate.
Looking for any more "compo" is not.

Compensation for what? Surely a replacement should be sufficient?

So you never make a mistake? And your first thought is compensation. What a charming person you are.

Why do you think you're entitled to compensation?

They will laugh at you if you mention compensation, they may offer a token £5 gesture of good will. Hypothetically who is to say you aren't trying it on with some out of date meat you forgot was in back of fridge?
Not saying you are but it would be easy to do.
Do the right thing and just go to customer services, not every error in life is a compensation case. (edited)

I purchased a packet of crumpets from Tesco a few weeks ago without checking and they were 3 days past the best before. Just helped myself to a free Costa coffee next time i was in as compo, no need to bother the staff.

What if you buy some meat on the 12th that goes out of date on the 13th , then buy some meat on the 14th but send a pic of the meat you bought in the 12th ? Compensation galore ..

Do you not check the dates before you buy? I work on meats for ASDA and the amount of stuff we waste is unreal. Most stuff does get removed as we rotate the stock, new to the back old to the front on that section.
As for compensation you'll maybes get a fiver voucher or something, but it's not really the attitude to have, it was a mistake and you said yourself you didn't eat the product, plus other people have said you could have bought a couple and get them mixed it which in time put the other out of date

I wouldn’t take your approach as it sounds belligerent. Whenever I’ve contacted stores over issues in the past, they’ve always sought to remedy the fault, and yes, given compensation. We live in a TikTok age where everything has to be overly dramatic and posted online for self-gratification. (edited)

The stress of worrying that you'd get sick over eating too much out of date food. It was too much for the OP

Okay, so actually it’s not my story. But it was my little sister who is blinded. She went to the local supermarket and apparently the person who works there helped her to get these two packs of meats. The same item. One of the packages says used by 6 May another one was 12 May. It was bought on 12 May. I am sure it was a mistake but just I was not happy that she could have eaten it if I was not visiting her. It’s convenient for her to buy cooked meats so I was wondering if it could be compensated more than just simply getting a refund. Obviously she is my sister so I was emotional then. Thank you for your input. (edited)

Not convinced having a blind relative will provide route to auto-compensation.
Maybe ask csa1 what happened after their sausage experience last month. Their approach was that compensation should be provided based on a pro-rata amount of fine that would have otherwise been incurred

I found a number of bottled Shakken Udder five days after the use-by-date spoke to a senior member of staff and didn't seem all that interest that I informed him. Don't bother trying to help them and let others get ill from drinking dairy thats over its use by date.

Worst I've found in my local Asda was a fresh cream cake that was about 3 or 4 weeks past it's date - and yesterday I spotted a mouldy pack of sourdough crumpets that were dated the 24th January. Told the people in the bakery section, who talked amongst themselves about it, but no idea if they went to check the rest of the stock. My wife (who used to work in Asda many many years ago) said they should really check the shelf to make sure none of the rest were the same, as they would maybe need to pull that batch from the shelf.
