We want you to know:
Stand-alone Blink Video Doorbell does not include Sync Module 2. Without a Sync Module, live view and two-way audio are available only in response to a doorbell press or motion event. With a Sync Module or Sync Module 2 get these features any time on demand.
We recommend mounting Blink Video Doorbell to your home, so it is weather resistant, by following these instructions. Features may vary with system configuration and settings.

Got this delivered and fitted today, not compatible with my wired doorbell (due to insufficient power) live view does not work despite full wireless signal, don't know why but I'm pretty disappointed so far. Will try it for a while, but considering sending it back ☹️

Apparently you need to EITHER have it getting sufficient power from the doorbell wiring OR you need a sync-2 module in order to get live view. The Sync-2 module is supposed to reduce the power drain on the doorbell by allowing more local communications.

You can either buy a higher voltage doorbell transformer (and doorbell if you want it to ring) OR you can buy a sync-2 module - gives local storage without needing a subscription too then + no wiring required for that

Or like you say you can just send it back if its not for you.

I have 4 cameras on a sync module one that have been grandfathered onto free cloud storage. Would this doorbell be able to use the sync module 1 and make use of the free cloud storage?
I have a Ring DB but I aint paying the sub after the ridiculous increasein price
    memememe's avatar

Sync module has nothing to do with free cloud storage. This door bell will add to your grandfathered free cloud storage via your home Wifi.

Yeah if you want playback and grandfathered to blink then yeah £50 for this door bell gets you there rather than Ring

Apparently, this doorbell doesn't allow you to see the live view unless there was a notification sent by the app first due to movement or someone pressing the buzzer. Which is quite limited...

I don’t think this is the case if you have the sync module, you can just view it whenever you want.

Still can't comprehend why Amazon have 2 very similar companies, Ring and Blink, selling very similar products but judging by Amazon's huge success over the years who am I to query them?

    it's a fair point.

Will they merge the companies, 'Blink ing Ring Inc' 'Ringink Inc' answers pn a postcard please

Will wait for some reviews to appear I think. ideally, if you can save to NAS, view the video feed at any time, and power it from mains wiring instead of batteries, it could be the doorbell for me.

I got rid of my blink cameras a few weeks ago as this hadn't come out yet and I wanted a doorbell. Just my luck. Oh well, was still probably the right choice as I'm using the ring alarm too now.

it's less than1.5 secs for Alexa to wake up and announce but will depend on Wifi signal and usage at the time of course.

Is there any theft protetction like ring has with this?
    jordanc93's avatar
    jordanc93
I don't believe they offer any theft protection and this doorbell looks pretty easy to steal as it doesn't use security screws like the ring doorbells do. From the videos I've seen it uses a metal sim card removal style tool to pop it off the mount.

What does ‘full system’ mean at the cost of 80 quid?
    sashforth's avatar
    sashforth
It means you get the sync module which allows you to store video footage to a USB stick. Otherwise you would need to shell out for the sub once the free trial is finished. However, if you are thinking of going down that road then you might as well pay another £15 for an Echo Show 5. (edited)

What does the grandfathered storage mean? I have a number of devices and apparently am still covered by the free storage after having bought the last system back in March. I bought the first blink mini in Oct 20 and have never paid subscription although have full access to cloud storage (edited)

Does this display the camera on the Amazon show when the doorbell is pressed?
    jordanc93's avatar
    jordanc93
From the YouTube review I seen nope it will only announce someone is at the door. There is a YouTube video showing how it's possible to get it to display on the show display using Alexa routines which is a lot more complicated.

    nokiafusion's avatar

No you must be what’s called grandfathered in. (An early adopter) this means you can add cameras and doorbell’s to your account and store cloud footage at no charge. I’m the same.

Does anyone have any advice for how to mount this onto a uPVC door frame? Will the included screws work if I drill first, or should I be getting some other kinds of screws or looking at a no-screw option?
    nige182's avatar
    nige182
If it is like the Ring, the screws would go straight in but be difficult to start, if you can drill a small pilot hole first though it would be perfect.

Can people confirm, but when I phoned them they have told me UK customers still haven't had the free trial ended and thus cloud storage remains free. Had all my cameras since 10/20 and never paid for cloud storage.

They told me this may end in October. If it does I will be using the Sync module storage option.

Mine arrived and I am just checking it out. I don't actually see any problem with using a transformer to replace the batteries either direct to the contacts or using one with fake/conductive batteries like this. As long as it does not exceed 3v should be fine

    amazon.co.uk/Eliminator-AIEVE-Batteries-Thermostat-Controller-Blue/dp/B0827R5MBC/ref=sr_1_10?crid=3EON1ZQYHBZEU&keywords=3v+transformer+for+aa+batteries&qid=1655301210&sprefix=3v+transformer+for+aa+batteries,aps,134&sr=8-10

Easy to cut and extend the wires if required.

Recently move my Blink Outdoor unit to wired power asnd its been fine. Can change all the settings to anything, without worrying about battery drain!

Tested it with 3v and 3.5v on the contacts and it works fine

Warning only do this if you know what your doing as you don’t want magic smoke to come out 😳 (edited)
    Gorskar's avatar
    Gorskar

    Replying to

Yeah that's correct. Wiring it will get it out of Event response mode even without a sync module.

However you need the sync module to store video footage offline. If you are happy to pay for the cloud storage, or you have free cloud storage (or you don't want to store footage) then a sync module 2 doesn't gain you anything.

Considering none of blink's other products do I doubt it. The only way to record with these is using a cloud subscription or linking it to a sync module 2 and using the local usb storage option on that.
