In case anyone is interested, there is a coffee hopper extension stl for 3d printing. Mine cost £17 with delivery. It solves having to top up coffee beans every couple of days

Hi there, now I have this machine I'd be keen to get this - can I ask where you purchased this from? A quick google only reveals links to the 3d print instructions

Got this last month, makes great coffee if you just want good coffee and not a snob. Better machines out there I’m sure but works great for me.

Couple of questions from a bean to cup newbie:

How much coffee in terms of grams does each coffee use? As in how many cups roughly would you get from a kg of beans?

Obviously you see visually when you need to top up the beans, but do you actually wait until totally empty before replacing. Just thinking if you want to change bean type/brand, would you have some short period of mixed beans, if that makes sense.

I have an espresso machine which takes ground coffee so I had the same question about this bean to coffee machine. I currently use a scoop provided with the machine but searching for the conversion i found that you would need around 7g for a single shot or 14g of coffee for double shot (this one for me because i add milk).

You can get around 140 single shots or around 70 doubles shots from 1KG beans.

You can have a look at shopcoffee.co.uk/cof…ns/ (edited)

Does it do large cups of coffee or only espresso size.

Soooo tempted. My Nespresso expert is showing its age now.

Is this a game changer of an upgrade on pods?
    MarkyB's avatar
    MarkyB
Yes, a total game changer, I was a pods fan for a long time then upgraded to bean to cup. The difference is noticeable. I got a delonghi one with a milk frother so I could do lattes, but rarely use that function and wish I'd gone for something like this instead!

I'm passing on this one because it doesn't do milk at all... No hose, no steamer, no frothing system at all. So not really fully automatic coffee unless you just drink black coffee.

I'm gonna hold out and hope for a good deal on one that does the milk too and ideally more grind levels.

I bought a Sage Barista Express two weeks ago but it's too complicated to use in a daily basis.
I'm looking for an automatic one, unfortunately this one doesn't do milk.

I have two of these lol one for decaf one regular. The first one has some problems but I sent it to them for repairs over pandemic and no issues. It was out of warranty and they prepaid shipping and fixed it with no problems.

Bought this 2 years ago and it's a work horse, very good! We do 7 to 10 coffees a day. A beast! Got it from Amazon Italy for a similar price.

Three grinding levels? Doesn't sound very serious. Delongi ESAMs have 7 - and it does makes a difference.
    Chz's avatar
    Chz
I find the 7 on the DL ESAMs isn't enough either, so I can't imagine how you'd get by on 3. Even on the DL, the difference between two notches can go from too loose to clogging the machine up.

I received the machine earlier this week, I can't say I am satisfied with the machine. A bit of background, I moved from moka pot (1 cup a day) to this. I bought this because I thought I might move onto more regular coffee (Americano) routine. In-law has a Delonghi Magnifica which I compared this with. Things I don't like are

    - For 2 cups of coffee about 100ml each, the drip tray is filled with about 150ml of water, and it is dripped from inside the machine, so having a cup on the outlet to capture waste doesn't help. The drip tray is relatively small, so I pretty much need to empty it after the morning coffee.
    - Compare to Delonghi which has a dial to adjust the amount of coffee ground used, 3 settings are not enough. So I can't really have a light Americano direct from the machine.
    - The machine is narrow, but very deep, I didn't pay enough attention to it before I order, so it caught me by surprise.
    - Compared to the Moka pot route, factor in the time to empty the tray and rinse it, I don't really save that much time, and factor in the additional amount of water used, I don't save that much resource either.
    - For the water hardness in London, filter, cleaning tablet and descale powder/liquid are essential, which adds additional running cost compared to Moka pot. It would have been ideal if Melitta included the trial cleaning kit in the box, but I guess it would have costed them too much?

I am still adjusting to the machine, for the price paid, I guess I should accept the shortfalls. I might end up liking it

Valid points I'd say. I've also no idea why there's internal water dripping out and surprised by the contents of the drip tray.
However, I make shorter 'espresso' shots using the machine then top up with the kettle. It's considered the best way to use these machines as the extra water needed is just pushed through the coffee puck, which makes the taste more bitter and foul (increases depending on volume). This method also slows how much you have to empty the tray (I use a cup under spouts too). Might be a work flow to consider.
I've linked a James Hoffman video above in previous posts which explains in detail.

I would have gone for it but be aware that it has a relatively small water tank which means more frequent refills etc (edited)

It isn't a good thing having water stood in a tank all day, much better to use fresh. Hence a small tank isn't necessarily a bad thing .

Have had one for many years. Great machine and excellent price. Separate milk heaters/ frothers are easy and cheap to pick if you’re a fan of milky drinks. Never had issue with amount of water it dispenses. Easy enough to boil kettle and add to an espresso or turn the dial for a long coffee from the machine.
